Why I will never go back to school [eXIvOOJJ544]

Hey, so I often get people asking me

questions like, why don't you go back to

school? Why don't you do some kind of

course and learn something and get a

qualification so you can get a better job?

And the simple answer is I just don't feel

like there's anything that I really want

to learn that requires me to take a course

or go to a school to learn it. There are

things I'm interested in learning, for

example digital painting, but there's just

so much stuff online. There's so many

articles and tutorials on YouTube, for

example, that I don't feel like I need to

go to art school to learn how to do

digital painting because there's just so

much good information on the internet.

I'm not the kind of person who can force

myself to learn something if I'm not

actually interested in it. I can't sit

there and force myself to learn something

that's really boring to me. I'm not the

kind of person who goes, I should learn

computer programming because they earn

lots of money. I can't go, oh, I should

learn about law because lawyers make loads

of money. I don't really care about making

loads of money. If I can make enough money

just to support myself, to buy food and to

pay for rent, then I'm fine if I can do

the things that I'm really interested in

doing. I don't want to waste the majority

of my life doing something that I'm not

interested in just so I can have lots of

money. 5 years ago, I did actually go to

college. I signed up for this computer

science course because I thought, hey, I

like computer games and the internet,

maybe I'll like computer science as well.

I thought it sounded cool if you could do

things like computer programming or

computer coding. Turns out I had— I

absolutely zero interest in how computers

work or the science behind computers or

the technology. And after about 4 weeks,

I, I left. I didn't go anymore. I just

stopped going to the class. One of the

things I really hated about the experience

was the classroom environment. I really

hate school because for 6,

5 to 6 years during secondary school, I

was bullied like hell. And after I

finished secondary school, I just didn't

want to go back to school ever again. And

I just hate the way the teachers treat you

like you're some kind of school kid. At

the time, I was 23, and this course was

designed for people who have just finished

secondary school. So all the other kids

were about 18 years old, and I felt really

out of place being so much older. One of

the most shocking things was when the

teacher told me to put away my phone. It

used to take a long time for the class to

actually get started. We had to wait for

all the other kids to come in, we had to

wait for the teacher to stop faffing

around, and during this time, I used to

like to play Angry Birds on my phone. And

one time, the teacher came up to me and he

said to me, can you put away your phone

and stop playing games? And I was so

irritated, I'm a 23-year-old adult. If I

want to play Angry Birds on my phone

whilst I wait for the class to begin, it

should be my choice to do that or not.

And I really didn't appreciate being told

what to do like I was some kind of kid.

Another irritating thing was they tried to

get us to do these stupid meaningless

tasks all the time. For example, on the

first day to help us get acquainted to our

new school, they wanted us to go and

introduce ourselves to all the teachers.

And then they gave us like this piece of

paper with a list of the teachers and we

had to write down who we've introduced

ourselves to and their names and what they

teach. And it was just so stupid. They

actually wanted us to go into the

classroom and go, hey, I'm Daniel, who are

you? And then learn about what they teach.

It was just so pointless, and I didn't do

it because it was stupid. And then

sometimes they would get us to do group

activities where we had to get together

with a few people and then research

something and then do a presentation as a

group. And I just hated it so much.

It just felt like a complete waste of

time. Why are we doing this? After 4

weeks, I just got fed up with the class.

I got fed up with how slow It was I got

fed up with being treated like a kid, and

I just realized I wasn't interested in the

subject. I didn't find computer science

interesting at all. Also, the teachers

were really old. They looked like they

were nearly 60. They had this kind of your

dad kind of vibe. They didn't seem like

the kind of people who were into computers

or technology or the internet, and I

wondered to myself, do these people really

know anything about modern computers or

technology? They seem to have come from

this generation where they used to use

typewriters. I just really don't like

classroom teaching. I'm pretty against

school in general. I just— I can't stand

being told what to do. I hate having to be

told how to learn something using this

person's or this teacher's method. I hate

not being able to learn stuff at my own

pace or how I want to. Now that we have

the internet, there's no need for schools.

You don't need to attend a class or a

course if you want to learn something.

You can learn anything from the internet.

There's so much information and tutorials

online. There's just no excuse now not to

learn something that you're interested in.

I don't owe anything to schools. For the

things that I know how to do now. Being

able to speak Japanese, speaking Korean,

learning how to make games for the iPhone,

translating, and drawing. I didn't learn

any of these things from going to

university or doing some kind of

overpriced course. I sat down in front of

a computer and I spent hundreds and

hundreds of hours teaching myself how to

do those things. Sometimes people ask me,

how come your Japanese is so good? Did you

go to university? Did you do some kind of

special course? And I say, no, I just

watched anime every day. I used websites.

I spoke to my online Japanese girlfriend.

For 4 to 5 hours every single day on

Skype. So why don't I do some kind of

online course and get a qualification?

Because I already know how to do the

things that I'm really interested in

doing, for example Japanese. I don't feel

like I need to take a course on how to

speak Japanese because I already know how

to speak Japanese. I'm not saying my

Japanese is perfect. I learn new words all

the time. Sometimes I make grammatical

mistakes, but it's at a level that's good

enough that I can make money from it,

from translating. I'm not saying my

artwork is amazing. I'm not really

satisfied with how my art looks like.

It's nowhere near the level that I want it

to be, and I read articles, I watch

tutorials on YouTube, I find pieces of

artwork that I really like, and I try to

copy it so I can try and learn how to do

it that way. So just because I'm not doing

some kind of course that can lead to a

qualification doesn't mean that I'm not

learning stuff. I'm always trying to learn

new things or trying to improve on the

skills I already have. I'm just not gonna

suddenly sign up for a course about

mechanical engineering or how to be an

electrician because I just don't give a

shit about those things. I don't care if

those jobs pay a million pounds a year.

I'm not interested. I don't really care if

the things that I'm learning or if the

skills I have won't make me a lot of money

because making loads of money isn't really

that important to me. And being able to do

the things that I really want to do,

doing the things I'm interested in, is

more important. And if I can make some

money doing those things, then that's

great. I'm not saying we should burn down

all the schools because we have the

internet. I know a lot of people benefit

from a classroom environment. I know a lot

of people need a teacher to guide them and

instruct them. On how to learn something,

but that's just not for me. Everyone has

their own way of learning that suits them

best, and just because you go to a

university or you get a qualification

doesn't guarantee that you're going to get

a decent job. There's this guy I knew from

primary school who actually works at the

same place my mum does as a parking

attendant, and he has a business degree

from a pretty good university. So some

people drop out of high school and end up

becoming millionaires. Life isn't as

simple as do this, go to school, and then

this will happen. Everyone has their own

path, and you can't really predict how

things are going to turn out. So I don't

know, get off my case.

station. This is where the Subway is going

to be. They've got all the furniture ready

to go. I guess all the food's going to be

displayed up there. Preparation counters,

a microwave,

new fridges. I guess this is some kind of

oven. I think these are ovens.

I guess this is gonna be a walk-in

freezer. Walk-in freezers,

busy.

I won't be here though, I'll be long gone.

I've only got a few days left here to work

and then I'm gone. It's been a journey.
