SWITCH 2 vs $1000 Laptop - Which should you buy？

Hello, welcome back to a new video.

So today we're going to be comparing the

Switch 2 to my gaming laptop, which is

over there.

So over there we've got a $1,000 gaming

laptop, and it's an ROG X13 Flow compact

gaming laptop with RTX 4050 graphics card,

16GB of RAM, and a Ryzen 7 series CPU.

Let me check.

Yeah, I think it's a Ryzen 7 940HS.

So anyway, we've got the Switch 2 and

we've got a $1,000 gaming laptop.

Uh, which one is better value for your

money?

So we look at the price points.

We've got the Switch 2, which comes in at

about $450 or £400, and I think this

laptop actually cost me about £1,000 when

I bought it in Thailand because I got it

on a discount after Christmas.

And also, you know, things are kind of

cheaper in Thailand anyway, so maybe it's

a bit more expensive to buy that in the UK

or the US.

Okay, so first of all, get the obvious out

of the way.

Obviously you're going to have more PC

games on a gaming computer because you got

full access to the Steam library.

And then on Nintendo, yeah, we got some PC

games like Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077, but

these are going to be older PC games and

they're not going to run as good.

Well, they'll run well, but they're not

going to look as good as on PC.

So, and then you've also got Nintendo

games like Mario Kart and Mario Kart

Deluxe 8 and Zelda, Metroid Prime, stuff

like that.

So if you want Nintendo games, yeah,

obviously you need to get a Switch 2.

But with the laptop, you can do gaming, PC

gaming, and you can do other laptop stuff

like link it up to a monitor and do some

work on it.

You can't really do anything on the Switch

2 apart from gaming and maybe watching

YouTube when they finally fix the app,

because it doesn't work at the moment.

So as we can see here, we have the Switch

2 powered by Nvidia ARM Cortex processor

with DLSS upscaling.

With the ROG Flow X13, it has a Ryzen 9

7940HS with an RTX 4050 capable of

high-end PC gaming with ray tracing DLSS

3.

So there are a few things you can compare

with the 2 devices.

Number one, well, portability.

This is extremely portable, very

lightweight, easy to fit in your backpack,

but I've never had any problems fitting my

laptop into my backpack.

It is a very slim laptop.

Is very portable.

And obviously the screen size is

completely different.

You've got a 7.9-inch screen, which is

pretty big in the hands, but then you've

just got this much bigger 13-inch display,

which is gonna be bigger at any time of

the day.

So portability-wise, they are both

basically the same.

The Switch 2 is as long as the laptop is.

It's like 2 Switch 2s side by side or on

top of each other when the laptop is

closed.

It'll be the size of 2 Switch 2s.

So if you can fit 2 Switch 2s into your

backpack then you would have enough space

for your laptop.

You could probably fit the laptop and the

Switch 2 in the backpack at the same time.

So you've got handheld gaming, which means

I can go sit over on my beanbag over there

and do some gaming whilst I enjoy the

sunshine.

I can't really do that with the laptop,

okay?

I could put the laptop on my lap, and then

it's a laptop on my lap, and I could use

it on my lap, but then where am I going to

plug it into?

Well, I'll have like an hour's worth of

gaming on a laptop without it being

plugged into a power supply.

So okay, maybe if I plug into a power

supply and I put it on my lap, but then

the fans are going to get hot because the

fans are going to be on my lap and get

blocked.

So it's not going to be very ideal.

Also, you can't really use keyboard and

mouse when the laptop's on your lap, so

you're gonna have to use controller with

the laptop that's on your lap, and then

you can maybe do some beanbag gaming, but

it's not going to be as comfortable as

just holding this in your hands and doing

some handheld gaming since it is a

handheld console.

So the Switch 2 has the laptop beat in

terms of price.

This is half the price of the laptop, and

if all you want to do is game, then this

will be fine for you.

You don't need a $1,000-$2,000 laptop to

do gaming.

If you want to do hardcore PC gaming, then

I don't really think that laptop's going

to be very good for it anyway.

You'd need something more powerful, and

not everyone has like $4,000 to shell out

on a high-end gaming computer.

I don't.

If I want to do some dedicated gaming and

I didn't have my laptop,

I would have to choose between getting a

$400 Switch 2 or like a $1,500 laptop,

which is still kind of low-end when you

think about it.

Um, when you're on a budget, the Switch 2

is actually a very good affordable device

because for $450 you're not really going

to be able to build a computer that will

be good for gaming in the same way as good

on the Switch 2.

So when it comes to price, I think Switch

2 has the laptop beat.

When it comes to portability, Switch 2

wins.

Handheld, Switch 2 wins.

When it comes to games library, okay, the

laptop wins because it's got more games

with Steam library and it's got Steam PC

games which are more up my alley.

I like Mario Kart, but apart from that,

I'm not really a big fan of Zelda or Kirby

or Donkey Kong.

Not really my kind of games.

So I'm more into Mario Kart and then maybe

playing some third-party PC games on

Switch 2.

But with the laptop, you've got other

games like Rainbow Six, and obviously PC

games like Stellar Blade is on PC right

now.

Can't really get Stellar Blade on Switch

2, can you?

And I don't have a PS5, so sometimes you

can get ports to PC that are never going

to come to the Switch 2.

I mean, in an ideal world, you have both.

You'll have your Switch for Nintendo games

and handheld gaming, and then you have

your PC for for PC gaming and work like

spreadsheets, studying, editing stuff.

You're not going to do that on the Switch

2, are you?

So really you want 2, you want laptop and

Switch 2.

But if you can only choose one,

I would probably have to go with the

laptop unfortunately, because I can't

livestream on a Switch 2, I can't edit

videos on a Switch 2, I can't document my

expenditures and income with spreadsheets

on a Switch 2.

So unfortunately if I can only choose one

Uh, I would have to choose the laptop

purely because I need it to make money.

I can't, I can't make— well, I guess I

could because I could just use my phone to

film it, edit on my phone, and then point

the camera at the Switch 2 and I could

make it like that.

But you know, I need to make thumbnails

and all that stuff.

I can't do that on the Switch 2, and doing

it on a phone is a pain in the backside.

Now if you were saying, what about an ROG

Ally or a Steam Deck even versus a laptop?

Now that's a different story because with

an ROG Ally or even a Steam Deck, you have

desktop mode and you can download

programs, or you can even access the

internet and use websites to do stuff on

it, like spreadsheet websites.

So if you're going to say ROG Ally versus

laptop, maybe the ROG Ally, because it

could also double as a gaming PC and also

a productivity machine.

Now, when you want to use a big monitor

like this, the PC is pretty good, but with

the current specs of the laptop, it's not

quite powerful enough to play games on

good graphics.

Through the monitor.

It needs a beefier graphics card, so it

kind of has poor performance when trying

to play the latest games on this big

monitor.

But when I dock the Switch to the dock,

which is over there,

um, it plays Mario Kart and other games on

the big monitor really well, really

smoothly, 4K definition.

But there's one problem: I don't get any

sound through the monitor because for some

reason the Switch 2 doesn't detect the

built-in monitor speakers and it doesn't

use the Switch 2 speakers when it's

docked.

So I need to get some external speakers to

get any sound out of the monitor, which is

kind of annoying.

When I plug my laptop into the monitor

using HDMI, I get sound out of my laptop

speakers, so I don't really need to get

another set of speakers.

So for that reason, uh, monitor gameplay

better with the Switch 2, but I need

speakers.

But laptop more versatile, really.
