DO NOT BUY Steam Machine - WARNING

So recently Valve has released and

announced a new console to their lineup,

the Steam Machine, boasting to be 6 times

more powerful than the Steam Deck and

coming in at approximately £400 to £600.

Although we don't have the official prices

yet, that is what it's likely to cost.

So is this Steam Machine gonna be any

good?

Let's find out in today's video.

So for the specs, we have a semi-custom

AMD Zen 4 with 6 cores and 12 threads up

to 4.8 GHz, and the GPU got AMD RDNA based

graphics capable of 4K gaming and FSR

upscaling with 16GB of RAM.

Now performance-wise, Valve claims it's

going to be 6 times more powerful than the

Steam Deck and it's going to be in a

competitive range against consoles like

the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

So likely to be around £500 for those

consoles, and if the Steam Machine wants

to be competitive, it's going to have to

be priced accordingly as well.

So basically it's going to be a direct

competitor to one of these consoles.

It's not really going to be a full-fledged

gaming PC, although it will have PC-like

features since it is running SteamOS,

which will have stuff like browsers and

programs and apps and stuff like that.

So it is slightly more like a PC than

something like a PS5 or Xbox Series X is,

but it's not quite really a full-blown PC.

So if you wanted something more high-end

that can play all the latest games on max

graphics, obviously the Steam Machine is

not really going to be for you.

So why would anyone buy this?

You already have stuff like the PS5 or the

Xbox if you want a console-like

experience, and then you have gaming PCs

and gaming laptops if you want a gaming PC

experience.

And then you also have the Steam Deck if

you want a portable handheld Windows

experience with Windows PC games.

So this kind of falls into the category of

you want a console but you want PC games

on the console from Steam, which you don't

really get all the PC games on PS5 or

Xbox.

So although those are good consoles,

they're not really going to let you play

all of the PC games or all of the Steam

games that you have in your Steam library.

And also, if you don't really want to

shell out the money for like a $2,000,

$3,000+ gaming computer that can play

everything, then this seems like it would

be a good option.

However, the problem is it kind of falls

into this category that makes its own

existence kind of pointless.

So first of all, you could just get a

gaming PC.

Now the main problem with the Steam

Machine is that by the time it comes out,

the hardware that's being used in it is

already going to be obsolete.

To be able to be such a cheap device to be

competitive against other consoles that

exist on the market, it's going to have to

really cheap out on the specs.

And it was going to have the best specs it

can have possible, but unfortunately those

specs are just not going to be as good as

if you just bought your own parts and put

them together and built your own pre-built

PC.

Yes, it requires a little bit of time,

patience, and effort, but you'll get much

more bang for your buck.

And this is kind of the problem the Switch

2 had.

Even though it's a brand new device, and

yes, it was quite impressive that it could

play PC-type titles such as Cyberpunk and

Hogwarts Legacy, the problem is it could

only play PC games that came out years

ago.

Cyberpunk has come out nearly 4 or 5 years

ago now.

Hogwarts Legacy, a very old game.

All of the PC games that play on it do run

very well and it looks very cool and

everything on a handheld, especially on a

Switch, but these titles are old and the

same problem is gonna happen with the

Steam Machine.

It will be able to play all the games on

Steam obviously, but probably at very low

or medium graphics.

And in a few years' time, it's gonna

struggle even more.

As soon as it hits the shelves, the

hardware is already gonna be pretty dated.

Although building your own PC might cost a

couple hundred bucks extra if you wanna

build something more future-proofed, for

$1,000 or £1,000, you could probably build

a much better machine yourself than what

the Steam Machine is offering.

Also, the Steam Machine only has SteamOS.

It doesn't come with Windows or any

operating system where you could actually

get any work done with.

Obviously, it's primarily going to be a

gaming machine.

So if you pre-built your own gaming

computer, not only are you going to get

more bang for your buck and more

future-proof, you can also do non-gaming

stuff on it since it'll be running Windows

and you could actually get some work done

on it too.

So I wouldn't really recommend getting the

Steam Machine unless you're on an

extremely tight budget and you really,

really, really want to play PC Steam games

and you just don't want to play Xbox or

PlayStation games.

And the Steam Deck performance is just not

good enough for you, even though you could

use that as like a console because you

could plug it into TV, then maybe the

Steam Machine seems like a good choice for

you.

But if you're really that broke, then I

don't know, maybe get a job.
