[2020-01-24] 20 Reasons Not to Move to Japan [pT00MuNNF58]

Hello. So first of all,

first of all, I would like to say that my

hair is not greasy, it's just wet because

I came out of the shower a few minutes

ago. Yes, I do have showers every day. I

do get a little bit irritated when people

keep saying that I don't wash myself and

that I'm dirty. I wash my hair every

single day. I just washed it, okay? So

please stop going on about how I'm

unshowered. So today I want to talk about

this Japanese guy on YouTube called Nobita

from Japan. He makes videos about Japan,

and recently he's made 2 videos in a row

talking about why you should not come to

Japan. He's given 20 reasons, and some of

these reasons— most of these reasons are

kind of silly and dumb, and I thought I'd

make a video responding to them as a

foreigner who lives in Japan.

Okay, so I have the reasons on my iPad.

He's written his reasons in the

description of the video, so it's nicely

written down so I didn't have to watch the

video and write them down myself. Okay,

so number 10— for some reason he starts at

number 10 as the first reason, and then

his last reason is number 1. Kind of back

to front, but I'll give it to him since,

you know, it's Japan. They do everything

back to front here. So number 10,

returning purchased goods refund is not a

given. So he says that one reason why you

might not want to come to Japan is because

it's difficult to get refunds. And I don't

really know what he's talking about

because I buy stuff off of Amazon all the

time, for example cameras, phones, tech,

and I just fiddle with them, play with

them and then I put them back into the box

and get a full refund. And even my wife,

she'll buy clothing from Uniqlo or

someplace, and sometimes it doesn't fit

her properly, and then she just takes it

back and gets a refund. As long as you

have the receipts, most of the time you

can get a refund. Sure, there are some

shops that don't offer refunds, but you

know, it's the same as anywhere in the

world. Some places accept refunds and some

don't. I don't really see why that would

be a reason not to come and live in Japan.

Okay, so number 2 says— well, number 9,

which is number 2— he says rent is rising

in many cities, especially in Tokyo. I'm

pretty sure rent is rising everywhere all

over the world. It's called property

inflation. As time goes on, everything

gets more expensive because the value of

money rises and increases as well.

And is it really rising? Because I checked

the website for the guesthouse that I

stayed in years and years ago, and they

still charge— they still charge the same

amount for rent every month. So some

places the rent is exactly the same.

Okay, so that's 2 reasons. We've got 18 to

go. This video is going to take bloody

ages.

Oh, I love making videos so much. Okay,

so his 3rd reason is getting a driver's

license can be very hard and

time-consuming. Yes, it can be if you

suck at driving. If you're good at

driving, then it's not really going to be

a problem. If you suck at driving, then

maybe it's for the best of all of us.

It's best for all of us that you're not on

the roads. And I don't really know why you

would want to learn to drive in Japan

anyway. Japan has the best public

transport in all of the world. Okay, if

you live in the middle of nowhere

countryside, then you're going to need a

car, but then that's the same for any

place in the world. Live in the

countryside, then you'll need a car. And

then he interviews this white girl from

Canada or America, and then she says she

failed the driving test 5 times. Yeah,

that's because you suck at driving. And I

don't really think it's a bad idea that

driving tests and passing the exam and

getting a license is becoming harder. I

think it's a good idea that less people

are driving because, you know, there's so

much pollution that's getting spewed out

into the atmosphere and I'm the one who

ends up having to breathe it, and then

we're all going to get cancer. I think if

you're a responsible adult who cares about

the environment like I do, then you'll

find a way to live your life without

having to drive a car. So his next reason

not to come to Japan is there are more and

more elderly people. And yeah, I agree,

there's a lot of old people when you go

outside, but I don't really see why that

would be a reason not to come here. If

anything, I think it's a good thing

there's loads of old people. I prefer old

people more than irritating kids and

children. And it's not as if the old

people are going to be around forever.

They're old. That means they don't have

much time left in this world. And as soon

as they kick the bucket, there's going to

be all of these empty houses available for

purchase at a very, very low cost. So that

could actually solve problem number 2,

which was rent is rising in many cities.

His next reason not to come to Japan is

People are very non-religious. Why is

this— why is this a bad thing? This is a

good thing in my books. If a country is

very non-religious, that would just make

me want to move there even more because—

well, I'm not going to go on a huge rant

about religion, but I think most people

know my stance on religion. Believe what

you want to believe if that makes you

happy, but come on people, it's 2020. Can

we— can we, you know, So his next reason

not to come to Japan is there's not many

job options unless you speak Japanese

well. And okay, I agree. If you can't

speak Japanese, then you're going to be

stuck teaching English. But why would you

come to Japan and not to learn Japanese?

If you're going to come here and live

here, then obviously you're going to have

to learn the language and be able to speak

it at least a little bit. And if you can

speak a little bit of Japanese, then

you'll be able to work in a convenience

store or a kitchen, or you can do what I

do and, uh, do YouTube. It's such a great

Number 4, dating can be very difficult and

different. Well, I don't know about

difficult because when I came to Japan as

a single man, I went onto Tinder and I was

having dates nearly every single day with

different women. And if a guy like me— I

mean, look at me, look at my fingers. If I

can get dates and get women attracted to

me with my social skills, which are

absolutely nonexistent, I'm pretty sure

you guys, most of you guys, will be able

to find dates and be able to find romance

as well, much easier than I was able to.

If someone like me can find success in

Japan on the dating scene, then I don't

really think you can say that it's

difficult to do dating in Japan. The

Japanese criminal justice system is

broken. And yes, this is very true, and I

personally think Japan should be

embarrassed for having such a stupid

system considering it's supposed to be a

democratic country. But again, I don't

really see why that should be a reason not

to come and live in Japan. It's pretty

simple to just not break the law or

try not to get in trouble with the police.

I mean, I've been here for years and I've

never been caught. The next 2 reasons are

Japanese mannerisms are complicated and

reading the air. Is difficult. Invisible

unspoken rules. And yeah, I guess this is

kind of true, but I don't think Japanese

people would expect you to know the

mannerisms and to understand reading the

air as a foreigner. I can't really say

much about this because I don't interact

with Japanese people. Okay, moving on to

his next video, his next 10 reasons not to

come to Japan. The weather. It's too hot

in summer and and it's too cold in winter,

and there's a lot of natural disasters.

Yeah, in the summer it does get pretty hot

and pretty humid. Not as hot as other

countries like Vietnam or Malaysia or the

Mongolian deserts, but it is quite high up

there on the heat scale. But it's not

really a huge problem, you just turn on

the air conditioning and wear a t-shirt.

Or you could live in Hokkaido, which is

pretty cool in the summer, and then

extremely cold in the winter. But I don't

really see why this would stop you from

wanting to live in Japan. Yeah, it's hot

in the summer, it's cold in the winter,

like most countries are. It's not really a

huge problem. You just put on a jumper,

turn on the heating. Next reason, he says,

having a pet is difficult, especially if

you live in a small apartment in a big

city. And yes, this is true. A lot of

apartments, including my own, do not allow

you to have a pet. That's why my wife

won't let me get a cat. But if you really

wanted to have a pet or a cat, then you

just look for apartments that do allow

pets because some allow pets and then some

don't. You just make sure you know what

kind of apartment you're getting in the

first place before you move in. Next, he

says smoking. Many places allow people to

smoke inside, which is true, but most

places have a non-smoking area and then a

smoking area. So if you go into a

restaurant, you just ask for non-smoking

area and then you don't really get

affected by the smoke. And then he says

job hopping is not common as much as

Canada or the US, and maybe this is

true. It could be true.

I don't think there's anything to stop you

from frequently changing your jobs— your

job. It would just look kind of strange on

your CV if it kept saying quit this job,

then got a new job, and then quit that job

as well, then got a new job. You You might

get questioned about it if you go for an

interview, but I think that's the same as

any country. If you really don't like your

job and you keep quitting your job and you

keep trying to find a new job that you do

like, well, just keep it a secret. Lie

about it. Don't write it on your CV saying

that you kept quitting and getting new

jobs. You don't have to be 100% honest

about everything. Next point says

unnecessary overtime work, and I guess

this is true for some companies, but Also

untrue for many companies. When I was

working at Lawson, the convenience store,

they never made me do overtime, and my

wife can choose if she wants to do

overtime or not. She does do it sometimes

because they pay her extra, but she's

never been forced to do overtime if she

didn't want to. Next point, next reason

not to come to Japan is people don't have

the willingness to fix social issues, so

they're likely to remain Even after many

years, and I totally agree. The Japanese

people are so stuck and stubborn, stuck in

their ways, and even though something

they're doing doesn't make sense, they'll

carry on doing it just because that's how

they've always done it. I find them to be

very obedient. They just do what they're

told to do, or they do stuff because

everyone else is doing it instead of

thinking outside of the box and doing

things because it's logical. They'll just

you know, obey what they've been told to

do. His next reason not to come to Japan

is Japanese people are fake nice,

and I don't see how that's a problem.

Isn't that just called being polite? I

personally like how Japanese people are

fake nice. You know, they're all smiley,

and you go into a shop and they look like

they're all happy when you know they're

not. They're probably miserable. But I

would take fake nice over just, you know,

being rude and blunt any day. If you want

rudeness and bluntness, then go to South

Korea. In South Korea, they don't do the

fake nice thing at all, and you go into a

shop and everyone looks absolutely

miserable and kind of angry, and they're

just really rude and blunt, and it's a bit

intimidating. So yeah, I don't agree that

Japanese people being fake nice is a

reason not to come. If anything, I think

it's a good reason to come and live in

Japan. Because it's nice when people are

being polite. I think that's how people

should be, and it helps society function

more efficiently when people are just nice

to each other, even though they might hate

each other. His next reason not to come is

Japanese people don't get sarcasm, and I

totally agree. I've actually had many,

many problems with sarcasm and Japanese

people. If you remember, 2 years ago I

made a video called Why I Hate Living in

Japan, and it was a pretty sarcastic

video. I mean, I complained about stupid

things like how the bacon tastes bad and

how the crisps aren't very good, and the

video went viral and a lot of Japanese

people saw it and got very, very upset and

defensive, and they just didn't understand

that I was joking and I wasn't being

serious and I was being sarcastic because

sarcasm doesn't exist in the Japanese

language. They don't get it. And it's

weird. I don't understand how you could

get so upset about a foreigner complaining

about your bacon. I get the feeling that

Japanese people are not very good at

poking fun at themselves and making fun of

themselves. They take a lot of pride in

everything they do, so when they get even

a tiny bit of criticism from— especially

from a foreigner— they just completely

flip out and get all defensive and they

genuinely feel insulted. I just couldn't

believe how easy it was to offend them and

upset them just by saying the bacon tastes

bad. It would be, it would be like an

English person getting really upset

because a Japanese person said English

sushi tastes terrible. The English person

would just laugh and say, yeah, I bet our

sushi does taste terrible compared to the

real thing. I just find it kind of

shocking that so many people don't

understand sarcasm and they take

everything 100% literally. I think it's a

real shame that so many people don't

understand sarcasm or they don't like it

because I think it's funny.

Okay, so there's only 2 more reasons that

he gives not for coming to Japan, and then

I can get back to playing Mario Kart.

It's hard to make real native Japanese

friends. Now, it can be pretty easy to

make friends, but it does kind of feel

like they're just using you because they

want to practice English. They'll say

stuff like, oh, I'm going to America next

year and I want to practice English, can

we be friends? And then you'll say yes,

but you know that they don't actually care

about being your friend, they just want to

use you so they get free English lessons.

His last reason not to come to Japan is

that there is separation between Japanese

and non-Japanese people. Okay, so those

were my thoughts on his reasons not to

come to Japan. I think he makes some good

points, but I'm finding it very difficult

to care anymore, and I'm extremely hungry

and tired from all of this talking,

so I'm going to end the video here.
