Why i Regret buying the LG UltraGear 39GS95QE - WORST Ultrawide gaming monitor

Hello, welcome back to a new video. So as

you can see, I have recently purchased

this brand new LG 39-inch ultrawide

gaming monitor. It has a 240Hz refresh

rate and I think it's an 800R curve.

And this thing cost £1,000 and I feel like

I'm kind of having regrets buying this

thing. Maybe it wasn't the best kind of

monitor for what I do, and we're going to

talk about that in today's video. So just

to remember you. So just to remind you,

this is the LG UltraGear OLED monitor.

I think it's the 39GS95QE model.

And yeah, it looks kind of nice here, and

it's 39 inches, which doesn't really mean

much, only just means it's 39 inches from

that corner down to that corner. Now I've

got a 27-inch monitor next to it for

comparison. Okay, so here's the main

comparison view, and my main complaint

with this monitor is even though it is

much wider than a standard monitor it is

not vertically much bigger than my 27. I

mean, it's exactly the same vertical

screen space from top to bottom as my old

27-inch monitor. So I had to buy a new

monitor because my old 32-inch curved

gaming monitor broke because I shot it

with my BB gun thinking that I could shoot

a fly on the monitor. And the fly— by

hitting the fly, I thought it wouldn't

damage the screen, and I didn't think a BB

gun would be powerful enough to damage the

screen. But it got broken, it cracked,

and I had to replace it with this brand

new new 39-inch ultrawide. I never had an

ultrawide monitor before, so I thought

this would be kind of interesting. I've

always had standard aspect ratio monitors,

16:9. This is a 21:9 aspect

ratio, which most games don't really have

21:9 ultrawide support. A lot of games do

have support, but the game I'm playing

now, Ultramarines— I mean Warhammer Space

Marine 2— doesn't support ultrawide yet,

and I've had to play with these black bars

on either side. So let me show you the

game. So the game unfortunately looks like

this with default native resolution,

something like 3440— I can't remember—

344016— no,

I can't remember it. Anyway, it looks

terrible with these massive thick black

bars on either side. So you see this

screen right now, it is 16:9 aspect ratio

squeezed onto an ultrawide monitor.

Effectively, it's this same screen size as

my older 27-inch. I mean, look at this. I

might as well just play this on my old

monitor, on the 27-inch monitor, because

it's basically the same.

Look, look at that now, and then look at

that. It is basically the same screen

size. It's not utilizing the ultrawide

bits at all. Look at that. So it's kind of

rubbish. So if we go into settings, the

resolution is set to 34400 I mean,

3440, 1440, 100.

Now I could stretch it by changing the

resolution to, I think,

I think that one maybe. So we stretch it

and, oh, now it's got black bars

on the top. Okay, that was the wrong one.

Maybe this one. I can't see the Enter key.

Okay, now it's completely full screen.

Look at this. Yeah, now it's using all of

the screen, but look at the game now. Now

my Space Marine guy looks really fat and

wide. So yeah, you can utilize all

of the screen ultra-wide and it looks

quite nice, but the downside is, is it

makes everyone look really fat, so it's

kind of funny. So yeah, yeah, it looks

okay, I guess. I think it's better to play

like this than in 16:9 resolution with the

black bars on either side. It just looks

kind of weird and gets some getting used

to. Takes some getting used to. And yeah,

your characters are all gonna look super

wide. I think it's kind of annoying

because you pay so much money. This cost

£1,000. And yeah, it's nice having it

really wide, but why couldn't they have

made it taller as well? I don't understand

why they keep the same height as— well,

it's exactly the same height as my

27-inch. Look at my pro measuring tactic.

Look, I measure it like this.

It's exactly the same height, and it's

also the same height as my 32-inch

monitor. I don't understand why they make

these ultra-wide monitors really wide,

but then they're really thin— I mean

short— at the same time. So it looks kind

of like you're looking through a letterbox

to game. So effectively, it's basically 2

27-inch monitors side by side almost.

Maybe it's more like a slightly smaller

27-inch monitor side by side. So you've

got, if you cut it down the half, you do

have like the effective screen estate

of 2 of these side by side. So this only

costs like £100, £150. If you get 2 of

them, be like £200, and then put them side

by side, and then you'd basically have the

same effect of this £1,000 monitor. So why

is this monitor so expensive? Well, first

of all, it's not even on the right hertz

refresh rate. Hold on. So it supposedly

has 240 hertz refresh rate, but for some

reason sometimes it's just doesn't let you

choose 240 refresh rate. So you can see

it's got 600 nits, HDR, RGB, and then

behind the screen— oh wait, it's 240Hz

now. I don't know why it was 120. It keeps

changing the refresh rate on its own, and

then I have to change it back to 240.

Honestly, coming from my old monitor,

which was 60Hz or 120Hz, I forgot now,

I don't notice any difference between

120Hz and 240Hz.

It honestly looks the same, and it's also

an OLED screen, which means it's supposed

to be more vivid, but it kind of looks the

same as my old mini LED monitor. And also

OLED, if you have it on too long, I've

heard it burns into the monitor and leaves

like this ugly defect on the screen. So

behind the monitor you've got this little

joystick, you can feel it, and if you push

it up, down, left, and right, it'll move

into different options. So you've got this

settings thing here And you

can do settings, and then you've got all

these settings like that. So as you can

see, I've got 240Hz. You can then go up

and down on the menu. It's quite nice

joystick things, better than having 4

different buttons that do up, down, left,

and right. So the joystick, I do like the

joystick idea quite good. So you've got

all the settings like sharpness, could

boost the sharpness. What happens if I

max? Oh wow. Oh wow, it really does.

I mean, look at the shoulder. If I put

sharpness down to 0, look how blurry the

shoulder skull looks. And now I'm going to

increase it to 100. Yeah, it definitely

looks— whoa, a bit weird at 100 sharpness.

Maybe put it down to like 70 would be

better. Yeah, the game looks pretty good.

I've only got it on medium settings, and

look at the sharpness and the detail on

the character. Looks quite nice. It's just

my main complaint is, yeah, certain games

not having ultrawide support. Also, when

you're watching YouTube videos, you're

gonna have black bars on either side if

you full screen it. So this is one of my

YouTube videos, and as you can see, on

normal viewing mode, default view, it

looks like that. It's like a tiny little

square box. And if you do cinema mode,

again, it's a tiny little square box. And

then you've got these massive black bars

on either side. And then if you go to full

screen, again, you've got massive black

bars because it's 16:9 aspect ratio. So if

there's a video which utilizes widescreen,

like some kind of movie— movies usually

are much wider— then that'll probably look

a lot better. But TV shows aren't usually

like super stretched like cinema movies

are, so not a lot of video content is

going to be able to fill this screen.

Most video content is filmed by the

standard 16:9 9 ratio.

And also games— a lot of games don't have

ultrawide support unless it's like a big

game or popular game. If it's like a new

game, it might take a while until they

patch ultrawide support. You might be

thinking, why don't you just wait until

they patch Space Marine 2 ultrawide?

Because I want to play it now, not in 3

months' time. By the time they've patched

ultrawide support, I probably won't even

feel like playing the game anymore. So

yeah, it looks like this. It's quite nice

when you do split screen. So for example,

I could snap 2 screens. I can have Steam

on the left, and it has more of a square

boxy aspect ratio, which is kind of nice

as well. They've got YouTube on the right,

so I could watch YouTube video on the

right here, but you can't full screen it

whilst it's split screen, which is kind of

annoying. So yeah, I can do multi-screen,

and then I could move these tabs around to

resize it like that. So that's quite nice

if you want to productivity and you want

to split screen stuff. Um, but what else

was I gonna say? Yeah, I don't know if

this is worth £1,000. It's kind of

expensive. I nearly got the Samsung

Odyssey G9, but that's even wider, so it'd

have like 41:9 aspect ratio. You notice

the 9 is consistent— 16:9, 21:9,

41:9. The 9 doesn't change because all

of these monitors get wider and wider,

but they don't get taller. So you just end

up getting wider and wider letterbox kind

of experience. If you want taller, you

can't really get a monitor bigger than 34

inches. It gets into like 40-inch TV size

areas. If you want a bigger screen than a

32 or 34-inch monitor, yeah, you're gonna

have to get a TV because I couldn't find

any 36-inch monitors. When you go into

40-inch, they're just TVs basically. I

don't want a TV on my desk. My desk isn't

really big enough. Because I'd be, I'd be

sitting here like that with this massive

40-inch screen. It would be way too big.

I don't know, maybe it wouldn't be too

bad. Maybe if my desk could go back

further, 40-inch would be okay. But I

don't want to get a 40-inch. I wanted a

curved gaming monitor, and it seems like

this is the biggest you can get without

sacrificing on— well, you, I mean,

you could get a bigger ultrawide, like a

super ultrawide, but then it's just, it's

too, too wide. And games would be even

more stretched and it would just look

stupid. I'm glad I didn't get the Samsung

one because if I played this game on the

Samsung one, it would be even fatter. My

character would be even more stretched.
