Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 Review - My Honest Thoughts

Today we're going to be reviewing and

having a look at the brand new Samsung Z

Fold 6, one of the best-looking phones out

right now.

It costs only £1,800 for the base model,

and today we're going to be testing out

the camera, the software, and the

hardware, and the AI sketching

capabilities of this phone.

So let's find out to see if Samsung has

created the greatest fold phone or if it's

a flop.

So here we have the brand new Samsung Z

Fold 6 today, and I'll be talking about

its features, what it's like to use on a

daily basis, and if it's any good.

So I used to have the original Galaxy Fold

when it came out about 4 years ago, and I

have to say Samsung have done a really

good job at making this device very

beautiful.

So the design of the phone is very boxy,

very modern, and I really like the design.

It looks great in my opinion.

So you've got this really nice big

external display, and then you've got the

Samsung logo on the hinge there.

You can see it shining away.

And then on the back, you've got the 3

camera bumps.

Now the cameras are pretty big, and the

bump is quite big and extruded, as you can

see.

As for the back of the phone, it's kind of

like this matte finish, so it doesn't show

fingerprints very well.

You can't see any fingerprints on it.

You do have this CE and BIN sign on the

back, which I think is kind of ugly.

And when the phone is closed, it's

completely flat.

There's no gaps at all, so it looks really

nice with that inner black lip closing

completely flat, which looks great.

And you can see the corners are very

squared off this time around, which I

think looks much better than the rounded

corners.

Okay, so the external display is really

nice.

Got a fingerprint scanner on the right

side, and the external display, very nice

and bright, very usable.

It feels

just like using a normal phone.

In comparison, I have my old iPhone 12

mini, and as you can see, the screen size

is basically same width, but it's quite a

long, tall phone.

So when you put it in your pocket, the top

part of the phone does kind of stick out

of my pocket, which is not great, but

that's what you get for having a big

phone, I guess.

It is quite a thick phone.

It's like having 2 phones stacked on top

of each other.

As you can see, it's about as thick as 2

of my iPhone 12 Minis on top of each

other, so it's quite a thick phone.

But what you get in exchange for the

thickness and the bulk is when you open it

up, you get this massive, really nice big

square display.

As for the weight of the phone, it weighs

about

243 grams, which is quite heavy for a

phone compared to a smaller phone like the

iPhone 12 Mini.

It's only about 130 grams, so this is

about twice the weight of a smaller phone.

The external display is quite nice, but it

is fairly narrow, so watching things like

YouTube on it would mean that the video is

quite small at the top.

But then when you open it up, you get this

massive display to watch YouTube videos

on, which is really nice.

It's a really great device to do media

consumption on, and the split-screen

functionality on this phone is great.

So look, you've got the pop-up thing for

the YouTube player, so you can close that

or maximize it or extend it.

And you've got this multi-split-screen app

thing where you can have 3 apps open at

the same time.

So as you can see, I've created a shortcut

for my favorite apps, and I've got my

stocks on the right side so I can check

stocks.

And on the left side, I've got Discord

here so I could read my Discord chat.

And then on the top left, I've got YouTube

playing up in the top corner, and I can

rearrange these different windows so I

could stretch them, make the top one

smaller, make the top one bigger, make the

bottom one much bigger, make this one

slimmer, or make it fatter like that.

So you got great flexibility when it comes

to the multitasking split-screen app

stuff.

And yeah, you can like rearrange it, so

you put this one at the bottom, these 2 go

at the top.

So you've got really great flexibility.

And then even better, you've got this

little taskbar at the bottom, kind of like

a computer taskbar.

And what you can do is you can then drag

up more apps onto the top for like a

hovering window where you can then drag it

around.

So now I've got 4 apps open.

You've got 1, 2, 3, and then 4.

And then you can just theoretically keep

opening more pop-ups so that I can bring

up And bring up my photos.

Another pop-up.

So look, now I've got 5 apps open.

It's like a Windows computer basically.

You've got all these little windows, you

can drag them around, you can resize them.

So you have like a small little player

there, you can have this website here, you

can have Discord there, YouTube there,

YouTube playing here,

and your stocks at the bottom.

It is really great as a little

multitasking device, and because the

display is so big

it's not like it's hard to do multitasking

things.

It's really fast, it's really snappy.

I never feel like it's lagging.

I can zip through everything I want to do

without any problems.

The Snapdragon chip in it is one of the

latest of the Snapdragon generation chips,

and it is really a good chip.

It does get kind of hot when you're doing

a lot on it, and it does throttle, which

I've heard decreases the performance if it

gets too hot, but But that's not really

something you can fix unless you put like

an external phone fan onto the back of the

phone, which would cool it down if you

really need to cool it down.

So yeah, it's really snappy, it's really

fast, you can really blitz through all the

stuff you want to do without any problem.

Okay, so let's talk about the camera

systems next.

So the cameras are really nice.

You've got this massive display which

really makes it a joy to take photos using

this viewfinder because it's just so big.

And you've got a total of 5 cameras.

You've got this selfie camera

up here.

You can't really see it because it's

hidden.

And then you've got 3 cameras on the back.

You've got wide angle, you've got a normal

standard 1x lens, and a 3x optical

telephoto lens.

And you've also got this selfie camera

here on the external display.

So you've got 2 selfie cameras and 3

external cameras, and it just looks great

to take photos on.

You can do it that way, or you can do it

this way, or you could even fold it

slightly like that, like this, and then

you've kind of got like a little control

area to take the photos with, and the

previews of the photos would appear here,

and you can kind of frame your shots like

this.

And you can also use it as its own little

tripod, so it stands up on its own because

it's a folding phone, kind of like the

flip phones can stand up on their own and

become their own tripod.

So can the Fold series if you put it into

tent mode or laptop mode, and you can just

prop it up like that.

If you want to take a photo of yourself,

you can like prop it up on some kind of

surface, walk around— walk away, and then

take the photo like that.

The photos look amazing.

So I'm just going to take this photo here

like that, and then look at this.

Where is it?

Look at that photo though, it looks so

good.

The quality is amazing, and the background

blur looks so good.

This looks like a professionally taken

photo on a professional camera, like a

DSLR.

The quality is just so good.

You zoom in and look at this sharpness,

it's so good.

I think it looks amazing.

So that's the 1x lens, and then you've got

the 3x lens.

So you've got the standard lens, and then

you've got the 3x lens, which zooms in

quite a lot actually, and you can even go

up to 30x digital zoom, but it looks kind

of rubbish.

It's very grainy, it's very pixely, it's

not very good.

But if you really wanted to take something

that was very far away, I guess you can do

it.

It just won't look very nice.

And then you've got the wide-angle lens,

which is very wide, kind of like a GoPro

effect.

So that's kind of cool.

We've got wide-angle, standard, and

telephoto.

And then you also have the 50-megapixel

mode if you tap on the top 12MP, it will

turn into 50MP, and you lose the different

lenses.

You only get 1x.

You lose the wide angle and the telephoto.

But what you can do is you can now zoom in

very far and it will still look great

because it's using 50 megapixels to crop

into that image.

And if you go back to 1x and then you take

a photo using the 50 megapixels and then

you look at the photo, it looks really

sharp and really good.

And you can zoom in, you can like crop in

really far into it, and it still looks

pretty damn good even if you crop right

into it.

Look, you can see all the bits of dust on

the top of that.

Looks kind of gross, but yeah,

50-megapixel camera is pretty nice.

You can also do this thing where if you

take a video and then play it and then

hold down the screen, it will turn into a

slow-motion video.

So I took this video earlier.

As you can see, it's a normal video, and

if I hold down on the screen, it will

start going into slow motion.

Which is pretty funny.

You've also got this shooting mode called

the Portrait Video mode, and it's kind of

like the iPhone's Cinematic Camera mode

where it uses AI to artificially blur out

the background for videos, and it looks

quite nice.

So I'll take this video and then I'll show

it to you.

And then we can also take a video without

using portrait mode, and you can see the

difference.

I also like how if you press this button

here at the top right, you can use the

COVID screen, the external display, as a

viewfinder.

So you press it, and now it's enabled.

So if you turn it around on yourself, you

can now see yourself in the external

display, and you can lock So the problem

is you might accidentally touch the back

display and press buttons, so you can lock

it like that.

So now it's locked, you can see it's

locked, it won't do anything.

And then you can just— you can hold it

like that and you can use the nice cameras

as your selfie camera.

So you can use the wide angle like that,

kind of like a vlogging camera, or you can

take photos.

So it's quite nice to be able to use the

external display as a viewfinder.

You hold it like this, it feels kind of

weird because you're holding onto the back

of the screen, but it's the easiest way to

hold it.

So that's quite a useful feature.

Okay, next let's talk about the S Pen.

I got the S Pen because I wanted to do

some drawing on it and use the AI

sketching feature, which we're going to

talk about next.

But first, look at this.

This is really cool.

So if you hover the S Pen over the screen

around this distance, you get this little

cursor, like a mouse cursor, little

circle, and it just helps you aim the pen

at what you want to press precisely.

And the S Pen is really nice It's very

responsive.

You can scroll up and down, do that.

And, um, yeah, so you've got this pen

button here, and when you press it, you've

got a bunch of options.

You can do sketch to image, you can do

smart select, you can create notes, screen

write, or you can add extra things.

So we've got smart select.

It's basically a screenshot.

So you like draw a circle what you want to

screenshot, and then you can now copy this

Or you can save it to your gallery, or you

can add notes, add it to your notes.

It's quite useful if you just want to

quickly screenshot something and then

paste it somewhere else.

So that's pretty good.

And, um, we've got create notes, so you

can do some note-taking like this.

Number 1,

uh, do stuff.

Number 2, go home.

So yeah, quick— take some quick notes,

it's pretty good for that.

And then you can like drag this around

Minimize it, get rid of it.

Now the best thing I found, really cool

thing, it has to be Sketch to Image.

Now I've done one earlier, I'll show you.

So I did this sketch,

I did this sketch of a girl, just very

simple sketch, and look what it turned it

into.

It turned it into that.

That is amazing.

And it gives you different options like

this one or This one,

this one.

So I want to show you quickly now what

it's like.

So you go sketch the image.

Now the interesting thing is you can

actually trace over things.

So you've got this opacity meter here, so

you can put down the opacity down and then

you can trace over stuff like this though

and just trace over it.

So if you suck at drawing, you can just

find like a picture that you like on

Google and then just trace it.

And then

the image— I mean, the AI

will then try to recreate it and make it

look really good.

I can't go up here.

Okay, so that's pretty much good enough.

And then you press Generate.

You can choose between watercolor,

illustration, sketch, pop art, 3D cartoon.

I find watercolor looks the best.

So you do Generate and it will take a few

seconds to generate the AI image.

Quite a few seconds actually.

So there, it looks kind of rubbish because

I didn't really put much time or effort

into doing the sketch, so it looks kind of

stupid.

So the thing is with this sketch to image

thing is if you do a really rubbish sketch

and you're really lazy and you just do, I

don't know, like a smiley face like that,

it's not gonna look good.

It's good, I mean the generative AI is

really impressive, but it's not magic.

So if you put a stupid rubbish sketch like

that obviously it's gonna come out looking

pretty rubbish.

So if you do like a more complex sketch,

it's going to give you a better looking

result, like a really cool looking digital

art of a beautiful girl or man.

Now that just looks like a child's

drawing, so it's not very good.

But then if you actually put effort into

drawing a good sketch— now I'll draw

something good, it's going to take a few

seconds, so just Bear with me.

Okay, so I spent a few seconds or maybe

minutes just drawing this more complex

looking sketch of a woman, and we do

generate, and it will give you a much

better result than if you just did like a

child's version of a stick figure.

So having some artistic ability will give

you much better results.

I mean, look at this, that looks freaking

amazing.

These all look great.

She looks really cute.

Damn,

like that is actually pretty usable for

some kind of professional work.

I don't know what.

So basically you get out what you put in.

So if you put in very low effort drawing,

you'll get very low effort looking

results.

You put in more effort to put in more

details into your sketch, you will get a

pretty

impressive results.

So you can switch it to Illustration and

then see what kind of results we get with

the Illustration filter.

So yeah, this looks good as well.

It's more of like a basic flat-looking art

style.

That looks weird.

And then we can also do Sketch.

I find that the Sketch filter makes the

women look older and uglier, but you get

like a black and white sketch effect.

And that looks okay.

Yeah, pretty nice.

It's interesting because obviously it

doesn't look anything like my sketch.

My sketch was really rubbish.

Look at this.

It looks really like, I don't know, not

good.

But you can see it's kept aspects of the

original sketch like the fringe.

Or the bangs.

So I did like spiky bangs, and it's

actually kept the spiky bangs in, and it's

kind of kept what I was aiming for with

the nose and the mouth and the eyes.

And we can try pop art.

So yeah, the sketch to AI, AI sketch thing

is really impressive.

You can do other things obviously, like a

banana or an aeroplane or a train or a

car.

Don't have to do faces.

I just like drawing faces.

So yeah, this looks pretty cool.

And then finally you got the 3D cartoon

effect,

which will give you like a Disney Pixar

kind of look.

Wow, that looks like The Sims, like a

video game.

That looks like Fortnite, like a Fortnite

character.

Now my main complaint is you can't draw

naked women.

If you try and draw boobs and tits and

nipples, it won't even try to generate.

It will just say cannot generate from this

content.

Okay, so we don't have to draw only women.

I just prefer to draw women because it's

more interesting to me, but we can try

draw a car.

I've never drawn a car before, so I don't

really know what I'm doing.

So I guess I'll just do the wheels like

that.

Draw like the back bit, the front bit,

make it 3D.

Yeah, I'm pretty bad at drawing cars.

Draw the doors.

Oh my God, my stomach's rumbling.

And then I don't know if I can draw like a

little man.

Ah, that looks stupid.

Okay, don't do the man.

I do like a little aerial antenna.

Headlights, license plate,

big fat spoiler up here like that.

And we've got the car.

I might do like a road as well, a little

road.

So let's see what that can do.

See if that looks any good.

Oh, oh, you need the internet on to be

able to generate it.

Interesting.

Okay, generate.

Still says no network.

Oh, there we go.

Yeah, obviously you need the internet to

generate the AI because I think it's

pulling information from the internet to

be able to generate the image.

Ah, that looks okay.

That's kind of weird.

I don't know what's happening to the

spoiler.

I guess I would have to— like I said

before, if you put more effort into the

original sketch and try and make the car

look a bit better, you'll get a better

result.

But this looks kind of cartoony because I

guess my sketch looks cartoony.

Let's try illustration.

So this is basically the main reason why I

bought this phone, because I really wanted

to be able to do some drawing, and the AI

sketch thing was really interesting to me.

Yeah, I mean, it looks pretty good as a

car.

So let's try draw me, try and draw myself.

Wow, it's made me look like a girl.

It's made me— that kind of looks like me

actually.

No, no, it's made me look like a girl.

I think I drew my lips too girly, that's

the problem.

Do a sketch.

So yeah, you can just do like a quick

sketch and then the AI will just finish up

the final product in a couple of seconds.

So it could be a real time saver if you

want to do art but you're too lazy to do—

why is it making me look like a lesbian?

Why is that?

It's so ugly.

Okay, let me try watercolor.

I think I didn't do this sketch very well.

Yeah, this one looks okay.

Still, it makes me look like a girl.

Okay, whatever.

So that concludes my review of the Samsung

Z Fold 6.

I think it's a really good phone.

It's probably one of the best phones I've

ever used.

It looks great, it feels great, it's

really fast and snappy.

The cameras are great, the external

display is great.

I really like the look of it.

I love these circular, circular lens bump

things.

Looks pretty cool and modern.

As for complaints, I don't really have any

main complaints as of yet.

I feel that maybe my only complaint would

be that the crease in the middle of the

screen is kind of visible still at certain

angles.

But if you're just using the phone and

you've got the phone facing you directly,

you don't really notice the crease at all.

It's just sometimes you do kind of notice

it, like This, for example, is very

noticeable.

And also the phone is very tall, it's like

a very long phone, and when it's in your

pocket, the top bit kind of sticks out a

little bit, which is not very comfy.

And it is quite a heavy phone, it's 240

grams like I showed earlier.

So yeah, it is quite a beefy, quite a

chunky phone, but that's what you expect

from getting a foldable.

It's because you want that big screen,

you're going to have to sacrifice

lightweightness and portability-ness.

For the big screen.

So yeah, that's my review of the Samsung

Fold 6Z.
