Microsoft Surface Duo VS Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 - Which is better

Next month, 2 really interesting folding

phones are coming out. One is the

Microsoft Surface Duo, and the other one

is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2,

which is a really stupid name. I don't

know why they put the Z in there. It

really wasn't necessary. Just call it the

Fold 2 instead of the bloody Z Fold 2.

And I was lying in bed trying to decide

which one of these new folding phones I

should get because I'm getting a bit bored

If you want to know which phones I use, I

have the Samsung S10+, which I bought last

year, and I also have the original Samsung

Galaxy Fold that I bought about 6 months

ago, all the way back in March. And if you

want to know which phone I use the most,

well, I kind of use them both at the same

time. If I'm going outside, I usually take

my Samsung S10+ because it's lighter,

it's smaller, and it's a bit more

portable. And I just didn't like having

the Galaxy Fold in my pocket. It was too

heavy, too big. I never really opened it

up outside anyway. When I'm outside, I

don't really feel like I need a big

screen. I just need, you know, a size, a

decent size screen so I can see things and

just, you know, quickly message people,

look up stuff on Google. I don't really

care about having a big screen when I'm

out and about. So I've kind of resorted

to taking my S10+ outside and then using

my Galaxy Fold inside as a kind of tablet,

which I guess kind of defeats the purpose

of having a folding phone. The whole point

of having a folding phone is you have a

2-in-1 device. You have the folded version

of the phone, which is small and

pocketable, that you use outside, and then

you come home and then use the big screen

inside. But I don't really do that. I

guess in my situation, it would have been

better to just have a smaller phone for

outside and then a tablet for inside. But

anyway, this video is not really about

what phones I use. It's gonna be about

which one should I buy The Surface Duo or

the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2,

both are coming out next month. The Duo is

going to be $1,400 compared to the Fold 2,

which is going to be about $2,000. So the

Duo is going to be a bit cheaper, and

there's reasons for that. Okay, so I've

just pulled up the specs comparison sheet,

and on the left we have the Duo, on the

right-hand side we have the Galaxy Fold 2.

So for the dimensions, well, you can see

them for yourself. There's not really much

to say. The shape of the Duo is a little

bit different, a bit wider. I think

Microsoft want people to think of it more

as a notebook instead of a phone. And the

each halves of the folding phones on the

Duo are much wider than each halves of the

Fold 2, which are much slimmer. Now the

main difference between the 2 folding

phones is once you've had them unfolded

Well, the Duo is going to have that big

hinge right down the middle, and it's

going to be pretty obvious. And with the

Samsung Fold 2, it's a folding screen, so

the screen actually folds in half. It

bends because it's made out of plastic.

And once you've unfolded it, you're not

really going to notice the, um, the crease

in the middle unless you look at it at an

angle or you aim it at some kind of bright

light source. When I use my Fold, I don't

really ever notice the crease in the

middle, and it just feels like using one

big screen. I don't really think the same

can be said for the Duo because it's going

to have that big hinge down the middle. I

don't really know why they didn't design

it so the screens join together at the

middle so you don't see that big hinge in,

in the middle of the phone. Looks kind of

stupid. I mean, how are you going to do

widescreen movie viewing with that massive

line down there? At least with the Fold,

um, you don't really notice the crease

unless you look at the screen at a certain

angle. So I think 1 point goes to the Fold

for big screen usability. And next we come

to the processor. Now processors are very

important when it comes to phones. The

processor basically determines how fast

the phone is going to be, how stable it's

going to be, how well it's going to be

able to handle apps, and how fast it's

going to be able to open and run them

without having problems like crashing. So

the processor that's used in the Fold 2 is

the Snapdragon 865 Plus, and the

one used in the Duo is the Snapdragon 855.

Now the 855, although it was pretty good

back in its day, it's still a generation

behind the 865 Plus. Snapdragon 865

Plus is going to be the latest processor,

and it's going to be noticeably faster and

quicker since it is the next generation.

I think the processor and the specs on the

Duro are maybe a few years behind when you

compare them to the latest 2020 flagships,

and that might bother some people. I mean,

why would you pay $1,400 for a

brand new phone and it doesn't even have

the latest specs? Now I

personally don't really think this is

going to be a big problem because like I

said before, I use the Samsung S10+ and

the Samsung Fold and they both have the

Snapdragon 855 and I think it's fine. It

runs everything really quickly. I don't

really experience crashing ever. Okay,

maybe once a week something might crash,

but it's not really a big problem. I don't

really feel like the phones are slow and I

don't really care if it opened or ran

things 0.15 seconds faster.

So although it's unfortunate that they

didn't decide to put the latest Snapdragon

into the Microsoft Surface Duo, I don't

really think it's a massive problem. The

Snapdragon 855 is still pretty good in my

opinion. Moving on to the memory,

the Surface Duo only has 6GB of RAM and

the Galaxy Fold 2 has a whopping 12GB

of RAM. So it has more than— well, not

more than, it has exactly twice the amount

of RAM, which is pretty good if you like

having lots of apps open, you want to do

multitasking, and you want the phone to

run smoothly. I personally don't really

ever do multitasking, even though my

phones can do multitasking and have split.

I never really ever use the multitasking.

I don't really see the point. I feel like

the time it takes to to drag open an app

from the multitasking tray and open them

up side by side. By the time I've done

that, I might as well just close down the

app I'm using right now and then open up

the app I want to use manually. And when

I'm using the new app that I want to use,

I'm not going to be using the previous

app. So I don't really see the point of

multitasking. So if you're not really a

big multitasker, I think 6 gigabytes of

RAM is perfectly fine. Fine, I think 12GB

is a little bit overkill. And even though

having multitasking capabilities is great

and all that, I just don't personally see

myself using it much. Okay, moving swiftly

on to the cameras. Now this is where it

gets interesting. For me personally, the

camera is— has always been the most

important part of the phone when deciding

which phone to get because I am a YouTube

content creator, having a good camera and

a good device to make videos on and be

able to edit them on is extremely

important for me. And as you can see,

um, on the left side is the Surface Duo.

It only has one camera. I actually laughed

out loud when I saw this because

modern-day smartphones have at least 3

cameras these days. My Galaxy Fold has 5

bloody cameras. 3 on the back and 2 on the

front. So it's kind of weird to see a

phone only have 1 camera again. I remember

the last time I had a phone that only had

1 camera, I was probably 15 years old. So

yeah, the Surface Duo only has 1 camera,

and that's good if you really hate those

camera bumps on the back of phones.

When you lay them down flat on the surface

and they wobble around, doesn't that

really irritate you? It doesn't really

irritate me, but it seems to irritate

other people. I don't really care. To be

honest. So the Surface Duo doesn't

have a camera on its backside because the

screens actually fold all the way around,

uh, 360 degrees, so you can turn it inside

out. And having a camera bump would kind

of ruin the design, so I understand why

they only put one camera. But this

camera is probably not wide angle, and if

you are a vlogger like me, having a wide

angle lens is extremely important. I'm

guessing this single 11-megapixel f/2.0

camera is just going to be like a standard

lens, not wide angle. I don't know why

wide angle is not the standard. The

standard lens is just way too zoomed in

after you've used to using a wide angle

lens and you go back to using the standard

lens. The standard lens just feels way too

zoomed in, doesn't capture enough. So I,

I don't know this for sure, maybe it is a

wide angle, but I'm pretty sure it's not.

But they really should have just put a

wide angle on that as well, or maybe they

should have put 2 cameras side by side. I

think they could have fit it in, why not?

Whereas on the other hand, the Galaxy Fold

2 has a lot of cameras. It's got the

triple 12 12 12 megapixel

triple camera setup, which is going to be

your standard telephoto lens, and then

standard lens, and then wide-angle lens.

And then on the front side, you know, you

have your selfie cameras, 10-megapixel

f/2.2, and the COVID camera

as well, which is— I don't really

understand actually. So if photography is

your thing and you want to take videos and

you want to have lots of different lenses

to choose from, the Fold 2 is definitely

the phone to get. If you don't really care

that much about taking photos and taking

videos, then I guess the Surface Duo is

fine. And then you could use the money

that you've saved, because you'll save

$600 if you choose the Duo over the Fold

2. You could use that money that you save

to buy, you know, a proper camera, or just

get a GoPro, or just use the GoPro you

already have and don't waste your money.

One thing that I'm interested in finding

out about that isn't listed on these spec

sheets is how good the microphone sounds,

because Sometimes I make videos like this

where I'm just doing a voiceover and I

don't really use the camera to make a

video. I just put some pictures or I steal

someone's videos from their channel and

then flip the image so they can't do a

Content ID match. And I need a good

sounding microphone. I think this sounds

pretty good. It depends if I speak closely

to the mic. If the Microsoft Surface Duo

has a good sounding microphone, then I

could make my voiceover videos on it and

it'll be fine. I don't really care that

much about the camera these days because,

well, it's— I'm sad to say, but I think my

vlogging days are kind of over because I

don't really go anywhere. Well, I don't go

to many new places, and even when I do,

I'm not really allowed to film it. And if

I did go to a new place, I could just use

my GoPro to film what I'm doing and show

you things. So I guess the combination of

Surface Duo plus GoPro could be better

than my current combination, which is

Samsung S10+ and Fold and GoPro.

Moving on to the final specification,

battery. Okay, so the Surface Duo has a

3,577 milliamp battery,

which is kind of small if you think about

it. The Duo is a big phone. It's a got

big 2 screens to power, and I don't think

3,500 milliamps is really enough to

last you for most of the day. I, I'm going

to imagine that it's going to last you

about 5 or 6 hours with continuous use,

which doesn't really bother me because I'm

at home all day long anyway and it's easy

to charge my devices. Uh, the Fold 2 on

the other hand has 4,500, which is more,

but I don't really think it's going to

feel like more because number one, the

Fold 2 has a more— has a higher definition

screen which is bigger and is going

to drain the battery faster. So in

conclusion, the Duo is $600 cheaper

than the Fold 2, and you can tell why.

The specs just lag behind the Fold 2 in

every single way. The camera is— well,

there's only one camera. The processor is

one generation old, one generation behind

the Fold 2. The screen isn't as high

definition as the Fold 2. The battery life

isn't as strong. The battery isn't as big

as the Fold 2. What else? There's not as

much RAM as the Fold 2. So yeah,

obviously the Fold 2 is going to cost more

money, but then you're also going to get a

more powerful device, a better device.

But if you're like me and you don't really

care that much about, you know, having a

slightly better processor and having 5

billion different camera lenses to choose

from and having a bit less RAM,

I think I would be happy with the Surface

Duo. And the only reason why the Duo looks

more tempting to me is because the design

just looks so nice. The Fold 2

also looks kind of nice. The new design is

much better than the original Fold. And I

really like how the outside exterior

display is a lot bigger. And it

does— it looks okay, but at the end of the

day, it still looks kind of chunky. It

still looks kind of ugly when it's folded.

It's still got a gap. And in comparison,

the Surface Duo just looks so much better.

The design is just really nice in my

opinion. I like the way it folds and then

there's no gap. I like the way it folds

inside out and you can turn the screen all

the way around. Um, it just looks

interesting, and at the end of the day,

you have to ask yourself, do you want a

really, really good phone, or do you want

a pretty phone? I guess you have to ask

yourself which is more important, the

internals or the externals. And I'm more

of an external kind of guy, so I

think I would prefer to just save $600 and

get the Surface Duo and have a

cool-looking phone that's unique and makes

me feel special. So I would give 1 point

to the Duo for design, and then 1 point to

the Fold 2 for specs, and 1 point to the

Fold 2 for cameras. Now you may be

thinking, oh, I gave more points to the

Fold 2. Yeah, but I still like the Duo

more, and I think the sacrifices you make

aren't really huge sacrifices. They're not

massive sacrifices. And I still prefer the

Duo, to be honest. I guess I am kind of

biased towards the Duo because I've been

using the original Fold for 6 months now,

and although the Fold 2 does look nice and

it does seem like a good phone and it's

better than the original Fold in every

way, it just kind of looks like more of

the same but slightly improved. And I feel

a bit fatigued from using the Fold, and it

doesn't really feel special or magical or

exciting anymore. And I guess the Duo just

looks more interesting to me since It just

seems kind of new and interesting.

I'm also interested in getting hold of the

Surface Duo and making a comparison

between the Duo and my original Fold and

just finding out what the main differences

are between the 2 phones. Anyway, that's

all I had to say about these 2 exciting

folding phones. Hope you found that
