Do I regret coming to Japan? Life in Japan update #2

Hey, and welcome back to another exciting

vlog in Japan. So exciting and fun here.

No, I'm not being sarcastic. So I decided

to make a normal video today instead of a

livestream because, um, as you'll know,

my livestream video quality looks shit for

some reason. I, I played it back after it

finished uploading And yeah, it looks like

Minecraft. It's so pixelated, it just— it

looks terrible. And I'm really

disappointed with my pocket Wi-Fi because

I paid some good money for that pocket

Wi-Fi. I'm paying about £60 a month for

the large capacity version, and I thought

it would be fast enough to do

livestreaming, but apparently not. Well,

it is fast enough to do livestreaming,

streaming. It's just that the video

quality is really crap. So what I did was

I decided to buy a second pocket Wi-Fi,

which is the faster speed version.

And just wait for those people to fuck

off. Okay, so I decided to rent the

high-speed version of the pocket Wi-Fi for

about 7 days just to test out to see if

it's any better, if it makes any

difference. Where are we going? Um, so

yeah, that came today and I guess I'll do

a test livestream tomorrow. But yeah, I'm

not happy with my current pocket Wi-Fi and

I'm wearing these earphones because it

makes me feel less silly talking to my

camera. It's not actually plugged in

because for some reason the microphone on

this thing sounds really bad compared to

the microphone that's built into the

camera. Stupid people on bicycles keep

creeping up behind me. You can't hear them

because they're completely silent.

I hate it. Why are there so many people

out at night? It's 10 PM. Go home, for

fuck's sake. Anyway,

um, what's this video about? Oh yeah, um,

do I regret coming to Japan? No.

Okay, end the video. Uh, do I— am I

disappointed in the guest house? Yes, I'm

very disappointed with the guest house.

Not because it's dirty or anything else,

but just because it is so unbelievably

boring. There's one interesting person

there, the Canadian— the Canadian guy,

and, um, I wanted to make a video earlier

today, but I ended up talking to him

almost all evening. And we went to this

birthday party. We were both invited to

this birthday party by this Japanese girl,

and it was so boring. We went to the

supermarket to buy snacks so we could

give— so we could contribute to the

birthday party, and we ended up just

sitting there, just the two of us, being

completely ignored by everyone else.

Everyone else were— it was, it was

something like 90% Japanese people. And

about 10% Korean people, maybe one or two

other Europeans who didn't talk to us. We

were the only English speakers there, and

we just sat there talking to each other,

basically. There was this Swedish guy who

was also with us, but he left after

the party started, and we felt kind of

stupid because we were invited to this

party and we bought snacks and drinks,

but we, we didn't actually feel like we

were being included in the party. No one

talked to us, no one sat with us or made

us feel included in what was going on.

It's been just over a week since I arrived

in Japan and I don't feel homesick, I

don't regret coming, I feel like it's been

a pretty good trip so far. A few

interesting things happened. I nearly got

scammed by a girl from, from Skamway,

from Amway. That's pretty good, isn't it?

Skamway. I came up with that myself.

And I met a few people at the guest house,

which, which is pretty good for me because

the first time I came to a guest house,

it took me, took me almost 5 weeks before

I started to talk to people and to get to

know people. And this time, within the

first 5 days, I started to talk to people.

Let me give you an explanation of The

people that I know at the guest house.

Okay, so first of all, there was this

Japanese girl who invited me to a birthday

party which took place tonight and was

really boring and noisy. Me and the

Canadian guy tried to have a conversation,

but it was so loud I could barely hear

what he was saying. And I don't have a

powerful voice, and it's very difficult

for me to, to have a conversation when

it's so noisy. So there was that Japanese

girl. Who has a boyfriend, by the way,

which I don't really know why I brought

that up because it doesn't really matter

if she has a boyfriend or not because I

have a girlfriend. Okay, so, and then

after that person, there was the Italian

guy. Now, the Italian guy is pretty nice.

I feel like he's a bit dim, but he's nice

and friendly. Let's wait for this car to

go. I don't

want to sound rude, but when I talk to the

Italian guy, I feel like I'm talking to

someone who, who isn't that intelligent,

who has a screw loose slightly. That makes

me sound really bad, doesn't it? But it's

the truth. But the good thing about— the

hell was that? The good thing about the

Italian guy is he introduces me to

everyone. So I walk into the room and he's

sitting there with a bunch of people.

He'll say, Hey, that's Daniel. He's from

England. And then he'll introduce me to

people, so I guess it's a good thing

knowing him because I end up getting to

talk to people that I wouldn't have

usually— I wouldn't have talked to unless

he introduced me to them. Does that make

sense? English is a difficult language.

And then after the Italian guy, there was

this Bangladesh guy which I didn't like.

He was kind of irritating. I didn't

understand what he was saying most of the

time, and then he kept trying to do this

British accent which sounded Australian,

and then I had to pretend it was funny and

do a fake laugh, and it was, it was kind

of frustrating. I spoke to him for about 5

minutes, and then after that I never spoke

to him again. Who else was there? There

was this Japanese girl. She was quite

nice. I spoke to her for a bit.

Um, we went to ramen together. Me, her,

the Italian guy, and this Taiwanese guy

who was also pretty boring. The Italian

guy and that Japanese girl, they always

seem to be together. I don't know if

they're in a relationship or if there's

something going on there, but I feel kind

of frustrated when I'm with them because

the Italian guy talks a lot, and if you're

with someone who talks a lot, then it's

very difficult to talk yourself unless you

just interrupt him. Or talk over him. And

the Japanese girl, she's like always

orbiting around him like she's attracted

to him somehow. Maybe it's because he's

white and he's speaking English, she's

interested in him. I don't know.

I don't make any effort to talk to the

Italian guy or that Japanese girl anymore

because every time I try talking to them,

it's really boring. For example, a few

nights ago we had Was it lunch? No, it was

dinner. We had dinner together and they

made pasta for me. Then I had diarrhea the

next day. But we just sat there eating

pasta and no one was speaking. I tried

making conversation a few times, but they

would just respond and they didn't really

seem to be very interested in having a

conversation. They didn't seem to be

interested in me. That's the main problem.

Look, I'm gonna be 100% honest right now.

I'm not interested in talking to people

who aren't interested in me. I just find

it really tedious and boring when I'm

talking to someone and they're not showing

any interest in me as a person. They're

not showing any interest in my life.

They're not asking me questions. They're

not probing me. I just find that really

boring. And yeah, I know I could just— I

could start asking them questions about

their lives, but honestly speaking, I

don't really care that much about other

people's lives unless caring about that

person's life benefits me in some way.

Look, I know what you're thinking. You're

gonna be saying, oh, Daniel, he doesn't

know how to make conversation. He's only

interested in people who's interested in

him. He only cares about himself. He's

narcissistic. Well, if that's the case,

then so be it. So what? Okay,

maybe I am. A little bit narcissistic,

but who isn't? But it's boring. It's

boring talking to someone who doesn't seem

interested in what you have to say. You

know, it's very rare for me to actually be

interested in someone else's life. There

are a few people who I genuinely,

genuinely find interesting as people, but

those people are very rare and very few.

But when it comes to the Canadian guy, I

feel like I'm having a good time talking

to him. I feel like I enjoy talking to

him. I feel like he's interested

in me as a person, and we have a few

things in common. We talked about gaming,

music. He made fun of me because I told

him I liked My Chemical Romance. He said I

have terrible taste in music. He said he

used to hate those kids, those like emo

kids back in school who used to like My

Chemical Romance, which— yeah,

there's a lot of people who think like

that who who think My Chemical Romance are

garbage, but I love that band. It's my

favourite band— one of my favourite bands.

It reminds me of when I was a teenager,

and it doesn't bother me that— that he

said that. We also talked about things

like Game of Thrones, video games, living

in Japan, those kind of things. I can't

talk about those things with Japanese

people because Japanese people don't know

what Game of Thrones is. They don't know

what My Chemical Romance is. They don't

know about Western video games. They know

nothing. And I was telling the Canadian

guy about this. This is the current

problem with the guest house. There's too

many Japanese people. There's not enough

Westerners. There's not enough English

speakers. The reason me and the Canadian

guy were just sitting there together,

outcasted, isolated from the party, was

because the party consisted of 80%

Japanese people, and it's

just a complete imbalance of, of,

um, nationalities. The guest house is

supposed to be a 50/50 split of foreigners

and Japanese people, but when it becomes

majority Japanese, then it's really shit

there if you're not Japanese because you

feel like you don't belong to any group.

You feel like you're alone. The Japanese

people there, they make their own little

Japanese social bubble, and it's extremely

difficult to enter that bubble unless

you're either really outgoing or you speak

amazing Japanese. I speak pretty good

Japanese, but I'm not outgoing. I'm really

shy and reserved, so it's extremely

difficult for me to enter that Japanese

bubble even though I can speak Japanese.

I think that the reason why I had such a

great time the first time and the second

time I came to the guesthouse was because

there were more English speakers. There

were Canadians, there were Americans,

there were British people, and we

had a nice social group of English

speakers. There was a nice feeling of

community. The problem that I have with

the guesthouse right now is it feels like

there's no sense of community as a foreign

person. I really hate Japanese birthday

parties. This is what happens every time.

So everyone starts cooking in the kitchen.

They will start making food for the feast,

the birthday party, and then they'll put

all the food onto the table, and then

everyone will start eating, and then the

birthday person will come. Is there

someone behind me? Yes, there is.

Idiot. So irritating. What was I saying?

There's so many cars out tonight. Why? Go

home, stupid. I can't

even make a video without getting

interrupted every 20 seconds. What was I

saying? So the birthday girl comes out and

then everyone starts clapping, and then

they'll sit down and then they'll start

eating. And then after they've finished

eating, they'll play some kind of YouTube

video which is a compilation of photos

of the birthday person or videos of the

birthday person. They'll turn off all the

lights and they'll watch this movie

together, and then after it's finished,

they will start clapping again. And then

what they'll do next is they will, they

will stand up and they'll stand in a group

and they'll take a group photo, and then

they'll start clapping again. And then

they might start drinking some alcohol.

It will get very noisy, extremely noisy.

And the funny thing is what happened

tonight was there was mostly Japanese

people and they all stuck to one table

talking to each other, but there were also

6— 5 to 6 Korean people and

they all sat on a separate table and they

just stuck to each other talking in

Korean. And then there's maybe a few

Westerners, me and the Canadian guy, and

we just sat on the end of a table talking

in English. And you can just You can see

it right in front of you— segregation.

People just, they naturally form

these social groups depending on the

language they speak. There's this one

Korean girl that I really hate.

She's basically the Korean version

of a chav. She looks really horrible and

she sounds really loud and irritating.

I don't mind those things, but the main

reason why I dislike her so much is

because There was this one time I sat down

at the table and behind me there was a TV

and she wanted to watch the TV. And

instead of being a nice polite person and

saying, excuse me, is it okay if I watch

the TV? She just turned the TV on and then

started watching it from the other table

in front of me. And then I had to get up

and move all my stuff so I wasn't blocking

the TV. And then she didn't even say

thanks. She didn't even say thanks for

moving. So irritating.

One of the main reasons I don't find

Korean girls to be attractive is because I

feel like they're very low-class. They

don't have manners when they eat. They,

they eat very loud, like, and they have

this irritating way of speaking that,

that just sounds horrible. Makes me want

to stick needles into my eardrums.

So yeah, right now the guest house is

extremely disappointing. The only thing

that's making it better is the Canadian

guy, and I'm just hoping that more people

like him will show up and we can start

forming our own Western group or

English-speaking group so we don't feel

like a couple of outcasts isolated in this

Japanese guest house.

I know this must sound really stupid. Why

are you in Japan if you're not interested

in socializing with Japanese people. You

go to Japan and then you moan about there

being too many Japanese people. Yeah, I

understand that point, but I'm not really

here to socialize with Japanese people.

I'm here to have sex with one Japanese

person and then socialize with

English-speaking people. I have a very

specific thing that I'm looking for.

Also, some of you might be wondering,

what if I meet up with my girlfriend and I

don't like her, would I regret coming to

Japan? I still wouldn't regret coming even

if we met and I didn't feel like we were

good together because she's not the only

girl in Japan and, you know, this,

this whole relationship thing— some people

seem to think that if I get dumped or if

the relationship doesn't go well Fuck

you, stupid cars. Some people think I'm

gonna become like an emotional wreck and

start crying or break down just because

the relationship didn't go well. No, I'm

not like that.

One of the characters that I have a lot of

respect for on— just wait for this person

to pass by.

I can't get any peace and quiet in There's

cars everywhere. There's people riding

their bloody bicycles everywhere. One of

the characters that I like a lot on Game

of Thrones is Walder Frey. I like the

scene when Catelyn Stark says, let my son

go or I'll kill your wife, and then he

says, I'll just have to get another one

then. Go ahead. It's like he doesn't care.

I really like that kind of attitude, and

if someone asked me, would you Would you

rather have just one long-term

relationship, or would you rather have

multiple relationships with multiple

girls? I would have to take a long think

about that before I come up with my

answer. I used to think that— I used to

like to think that I was a one-girl kind

of guy. Jesus Christ,

every time I press the record button, a

car comes. I like— I used to like to think

that I was a one-girl kind of guy who,

who would find a nice girl and then be in

a relationship with her for a long time.

But, you know, having several

relationships, even if they were failed

relationships, even if they were

short-term relationships, it's not so bad.

You get to, you get to try out different

types of girls instead of just being stuck

with one your whole life. Why would you

want to be stuck with one girl for your

whole life? That's like only being able to

eat one flavor of ice cream for your whole

life. That sucks. I'm not saying that I'm

only interested in short-term

relationships. I would love to have a

long-term relationship with a girl that I

really get on with, but I'm just saying

it's not so bad to have several short-term

relationships. Um, oh, there was also this

other guy I wanted to talk about. There's

this really strange white guy who's in the

guest house. He's very tall, he's very

fat, and I'm pretty sure he's from France,

but he's really weird. He doesn't talk to

anyone. He just sits there by himself kind

of looking around like he's seen a ghost,

and then he just, he just wanders up and

down randomly, starts muttering something

to himself. And it's like he's at the

guest house all the time. It's like he

doesn't leave the guest house. It's really

creepy. He seems like he's gonna snap any

moment and just go on a killing rampage

with a kitchen knife. He's really creepy.

Me and the Canadian guy, we joke about

him. We were watching him during the

birthday party, and during the birthday

party, he was just standing there in the

middle of the room. He was just standing

there for ages, for at least half an hour.

Looking around, staring into space.

It was really strange and off-putting. I

swear he's gonna snap and just start

murdering everyone soon. Anyway,

I think that's enough for tonight. Um,

yeah, I have things to do, I have people

to talk to, and yeah,

this is my life in Japan. It's very

exciting, isn't it?
