Hello and welcome back to my review of

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. As an

avid fan of Star Wars and LEGO, I just

knew I had to play this game.

Unfortunately, so far it's been kind of

disappointing and very lacking in luster.

So basically, this entire game is just all

of these Star Wars movies and shows

condensed down into one LEGO game. So if

you're like me and you've seen all of the

movies and all of the shows and you know

everything about Star Wars already,

you're going to feel kind of bored with

this game because there's no new

characters, there's no new storylines

here. It's just a the same old Star Wars

stories that we already know, but in like

a very dumbed-down simplified version.

Maybe if you're someone who's never seen

any of the movies and you have no idea

what Star Wars is about, then this is like

a very easy way to get into Star Wars and

have like a bite-sized simplified shortcut

version of what happens in Star Wars. But

for me personally, as a veteran of Star

Wars, I feel kind of bored having to go

through and listen to the same old Star

Wars story all over again. It starts off

at Episode 4, you've got to escape from

the Empire, you land on Tatooine, you take

the droid to Obi-Wan Kenobi, and then you

meet Luke, and then you escape Tatooine on

the Millennium Falcon, then you go to

Alderaan, it's blown up, and you get on

the Death Star. You know, it's just like

the same old thing over and over again

that I've heard a million times by now.

It does have the typical LEGO humor thrown

into it, and it's more of a childish

version of Star Wars. So as an adult man,

I didn't really find the humor to be very

funny. So when it comes to the story of

the game, it's going to be very

disappointing and boring if you're already

familiar with the Star Wars franchise and

movies. So what about the gameplay?

Surely that must be good. Unfortunately,

the answer to that question is no. The

gameplay is also very flat, bland, and

lacking in luster. So the gameplay mainly

revolves around a few things. There's

shooting, and there's lightsaber battles,

and there's puzzles and bit of

platforming, and there's also some vehicle

gameplay which we'll talk about later. So

most of the game you'll spend running

around shooting at stormtroopers, mainly

using blasters and laser weapons, and

maybe if you have a Jedi available, you

can do some lightsaber combat as well.

The shooting combat in the game is very

boring and very basic. The stormtroopers

are not challenging to fight at all. They

just stand there shooting at you. You

don't really take a lot of damage, and you

can basically just stand there in front of

them, not even bothering to take cover.

There is a cover system, and you can hide

behind walls and barricades and stuff like

that, but you really don't need to. You

can just stand out in the open and shoot

them all down one by one, and it's just so

easy. The guns and the gunplay don't

really feel very satisfying to shoot, and

the stormtroopers don't really feel very

satisfying when you take them down. It

just feels kind of boring and tedious,

like it's a chore having to take down

every single Stormtrooper so I can move on

to the next stage. And the lightsaber

combat is equally as boring and bland and

flat. Don't expect any kind of advanced

melee fighting combat system here as if

you'd get in Elden Ring or Dark Souls.

There's no block, there's no parry,

there's no combos, there's nothing really

special. You just get like a basic attack

that you spam and mash away at. You get a

lightsaber throw, you can use a few Force

powers. I don't know if you can actually

reflect laser bolts, maybe you have to

unlock that later in the game, but so far

I haven't found it. So whilst you're

playing the game, you'll have like a few

characters alongside with you. The other

characters in Star Wars would be

alongside, and you play as part of a team,

and you can switch between different

characters whenever you want to. So if you

get a bit bored with the blaster gameplay,

then you can switch to Jedi kind of

lightsaber fighting. And if you get bored

with lightsabers, you can switch back to

shooting and blasting. And you can also do

some melee attacks with some of the

characters as well. You can also play as

R2-D2 or C-3PO if you wish to. So there is

quite a variety of different gameplay

styles that just switch to on the fly as

you play the game. The problem is all of

these gameplay styles are all just kind of

boring to play. The gameplay just doesn't

really feel satisfying at all. I didn't

enjoy the shooting, I didn't really enjoy

the lightsaber fighting, I didn't even

really enjoy when you smash someone with a

lightsaber and then their Lego body blocks

will explode into different pieces. So

apart from the fighting and the combat,

there's also puzzles which mainly involves

R2-D2 sticking his little rod into a

computer terminal, and then you have to do

this same tedious puzzle over and over

again, basically where you've got like a

circle ring and then you've got to rotate

the rings so it matches up the little

square shape. It's so easy and just feels

so pointless that anyone could do this

kind of puzzle. There's just absolutely

zero challenge to any of the puzzles. It

just makes you think, what was the point

of implementing these puzzles? They could

have just made it like an automated

animation when he's hacking into the

terminal. I'm not really a big fan of

having to solve puzzles in video games,

but if you're going to give me a puzzle to

solve, at least make it worth solving. If

it's just like a really basic puzzle where

you have to match up shapes that doesn't

take any mental capacity at all, then I

feel like you're just wasting my time.

There's also vehicle gameplay, and you can

control and drive many of the vehicles in

Star Wars, and you can also fly some of

the spaceships in space, which is pretty

cool, you would think. But unfortunately,

nearly all of the vehicles in the game so

far just handle absolutely terribly, and

it feels horrible to pilot or drive any of

these vehicles around. I haven't really

enjoyed playing in any of the vehicles in

the game so far, but my biggest complaint

about the game has to be be the building

mechanics. So you would think that this,

because it's a Lego game, that the most

important part of the game would be

building things out of Lego. But it just

seems like they haven't put any efforts

into making an interesting building

mechanic where you can build stuff out of

Lego. It's just kind of boring to build

stuff out of Lego in this Lego game,

which is kind of ironic. You'd think that

a game called Lego would be all about

building stuff out of Lego. You can't

build what you want to wherever you want

to like you can in Minecraft, which would

have been an interesting idea. I never

understood why it Minecraft that

popularized the whole building stuff out

of blocks, when really LEGO was the first

company, the first brand to pioneer

building stuff out of little blocks. They

just didn't really transition that into

the video game world, which was a massive

missed opportunity in my opinion. So in

the game, you can only build stuff out of

LEGO when it tells you to build stuff out

of LEGO. You can't just build anything you

want to anywhere you want to. You have to

stand in a very specific spot, a very

specific place in each level, and then you

just hold down B and then it kind of

automatically builds something very basic

like a wall or some kind of turrets that

you need for a puzzle to progress to the

next area. It would have been interesting

and pretty cool if it let you build stuff

out of individual Lego bricks, and then

you could just build anything you wanted

to, even if it didn't actually do anything

useful. For example, look at Fortnite.

Even Fortnite has a superior building

mechanic where you can build anything you

want to. You get a load of panels and

blocks and structural stuff, and you can

just kind of build any kind of objects or

structure that you would like to. It would

have been cool if LEGO Star Wars, you

could also do that where you just build

like random objects. If you needed cover,

you could build your own custom wall with

a little hole so you can shoot out of. Or

maybe they could have let you build your

own vehicle out of LEGO bricks. They could

have given you wheels and then you could

build like your own shape of a vehicle and

it could have ragdoll physics and that

would be really fun. But no, all you do is

stand in one place and you hold down B and

then all these bricks fly in and this

preset pre-made object just gets

automatically built that you can't

customize or do anything to it. It's

really boring. So yeah, I feel like they

really missed a good opportunity here to

make the whole game about building Legos.

Instead, it just looks like Lego. The only

Lego thing about this Lego game is that it

looks like Lego. And for those reasons, I

can't really give the game a very high

score. I don't think I could recommend

buying this game, and I would have to give

it a 4.2 out of 10.
