What Happened to Totalbiscuit

Hello and welcome back to part 2 in my

series of what happened to YouTubers who

used to be very, very famous and popular

who no longer are famous anymore, or maybe

they don't even exist anymore, or maybe

they don't even upload to their channels

anymore. And today we're going to be

talking about one of my favorite YouTubers

ever, TotalBiscuit, also known as John

Bain. TotalBiscuit used to be a British

YouTuber who made videos about video games

and the gaming industry. Unfortunately,

he passed away in 2018 in

May. Actually, I was in Malaysia at the

time when this happened. I still remember

the day I opened my news app and it said

TotalBiscuit has passed away from cancer,

and I was just so shocked. I felt like a

truck hit me in the face. It was the first

time I ever cried over someone passing

away. And it's kind of strange because I

don't even know this guy personally.

Never met him. He's not family. He's not

like a friend of mine. But still, I was so

sad when I found out that he didn't make

it. I actually cried. He got bowel cancer,

and I think he made a big mistake because

he had symptoms of bowel cancer for about

a year, and he didn't get checked out

until things got really bad. And then

luckily they managed to treat the bowel

cancer with chemo, but then the cancer

came back in his liver and they couldn't

really much to help his liver, and he

managed to carry on living for about 3 to

4 years. They gave him a life expectancy

of 3 years, and he managed to beat that

by, by a little bit. It was just kind of a

shock because he always seemed like such a

strong and confident guy. The way he

spoke, the way he carried himself, just

gave you this impression that he was kind

of indestructible. And then to find out

that he lost his fight against his cancer.

It was just a really big blow to the whole

gaming community, and the community he

built up on YouTube was just devastated.

So he started off his YouTube career a

really, really long time ago, probably

before 2010, maybe in 2007

or '06 or maybe even '05. He started doing

this thing called WoW Radio Remember back

then there used to be a very, very popular

multiplayer online game called World of

Warcraft? Well, he did some kind of radio

show where he would talk about updates to

the game and give tips for the game.

He was also really into StarCraft and he

would do commentary over StarCraft

matches. And then I think he started

making videos about video games,

critiquing them and reviewing them. Well,

he never really liked to say that he

reviewed games. He said he always

critiqued them or gave first impressions

of the game. And he would make these

really long videos, about 40 minutes to an

hour, getting really in-depth, giving

really in-depth detail for the game,

going into the options menu, explaining

everything, every single button, what

every option did. And I think I actually

saw him in the World of Warcraft game. I

think I was on the same server as he was,

and I was Horde, and he had a troll. Male

troll and he had some guild called

Trollfest. And I'm pretty sure I saw him

one time outside of the inn and he was

just there for a brief moment and then he

Hearthstoned away somewhere. And I felt

pretty humbled that that could have been

the real TotalBiscuit standing right in

front of me. Unfortunately, I was too

stupid to take a screenshot. Oh, I wish I

took a screenshot. That would have been

such a great screenshot. Anyway, I'm not

100% sure if it was him. I'm pretty sure

it was him though. He also used to do this

podcast, gaming podcast called the

Co-Optional Podcast with 2 other people,

Jesse Cox and this woman called Dodger,

and they would have a 4th guest,

different guest every show, and I used to

absolutely love this podcast. I would

watch it, I would look forward to watching

it every week, and it was really nice just

listening to a bunch of nerdy people talk

about games, and TotalBiscuit was also was

always so passionate and enthusiastic

about talking about games and the video

game industry, and even if he was talking

about a game I wasn't really interested

in, he somehow managed to make the game

sound interesting at least. I ended up

watching so many of his videos about video

games that I didn't really care about and

had no interest in buying whatsoever. I

only listened to it because I wanted to

hear what he had to say. I do feel like he

wasted a lot of time making videos about

certain games which just looked like utter

rubbish. He would play these weird 2D

indie games that looked like they were

made by some university student as a

project, and then he would properly review

them and critique them and go into all of

the nitty-gritty details of the game when

it just looked like a crappy 2D Flash game

that didn't really deserve that amount of

time and effort spent on it. I thought it

was kind of weird, but He also has a wife,

an American wife, and he moved over to

America, got married. They have a stepson.

I don't think he has any children of his

own. And the wife was supposed to carry on

doing the Co-Optional Podcast after he

passed away, but it seems as though she

lost interest or she gave up because there

hasn't been a new Co-Optional Podcast

since half a year ago. And I guess it

makes sense. I kind of lost interest in

watching the Co-Optional Podcast after

TotalBiscuit passed away. That was the

main reason why I was watching it in the

first place. When he passed away, they

were trying to raise money to pay for his

medical bills, and I actually donated

about $15. And that was the first time I

ever felt moved enough to want to donate

money to some kind of cause. Before then,

I had never donated money to charity or

any kind of fundraiser, so that was kind

of a weird experience for me. He was

probably one of the most honorable

YouTubers that ever existed. He was so— he

always cared about providing quality

content, and he never tricked his viewers

or tried to manipulate them in any way.

He had so much credibility, and I'm pretty

sure he would hate me. Can you imagine if

he knew about me and my channel? Jesus

Christ, he would absolutely detest me for

everything I do. Well, I'm pretty sure all

of the people that I like and look up to

would hate me if they found out about my

channel or the stuff I make or the things

I do. I think that's where the saying that

you shouldn't meet your heroes comes into

effect. Yeah, you really shouldn't meet

people that you look up to online because

they might not like you if they find out

about you. I actually had an experience

where there's this YouTuber who lives in

Japan called Gimmeabreakman, and I used to

watch him like 12 years ago, and I did

kind of look up to him. He works in Japan

as an English teacher, has his own

business, had a Japanese— well, he has a

Japanese wife. And I thought, wow, I wish

I could live like that. That guy's pretty

cool. And then he found out about my

channel and he made some pretty mean

comments against me, and I actually felt a

little bit hurt to be insulted

by someone that I used to look up to. I'm

actually kind of surprised because when I

talk about TotalBiscuit on my livestreams

or elsewhere. I feel like most people who

watch me or are subscribed to me don't

even know who he is, and that's kind of

weird considering he has nearly 2 million

subscribers and he was, you know,

pretty well known in the gaming industry.

I guess I don't really have many viewers

who are into gaming. I don't even know

what my viewers are into. Got 100K subs,

I don't even know what they're into

because they won't watch anything I make

apart from weird drama stuff or stuff

about girls or gay stuff. I bet you

anything if I made this video on the main

channel, it would absolutely flop. It

would probably get the worst views I've

ever had in a year or two. One time I made

a video about this woman who used— this

girl who used to live in Japan, this

American girl called Apple Milk. Not sure

if you remember. I made a video kind of

like this, just talking about her, what

happened to her, where she ended up. And

it was interesting for me to make because

I used to watch her as well when I was

really into Japan when I was 18 or 19.

And no one gave a flying shit.

It got like 11k views after a week, and I

was so ashamed, so embarrassed, that I

took it down. People keep asking me, why

do I take down videos if they get low

views? Surely if you leave it up, it would

get more views, and by taking it down,

you're losing views because people can't

watch it anymore because it's gone. Well,

the reason why I take it down is because I

just feel embarrassed that so many people

were subbed to me and don't even want to

watch stuff that I'm actually interested

in. I just feel like I can't actually make

videos that I'm really interested in or

that I want to make because people won't

care. That's why I actually enjoy

uploading to this second channel more,

and that's why I deleted the, the video

about my dad yesterday because it got such

bad views. I've never had such bad views.

It had even worse views than my

illustrated video about people I hate,

and when I uploaded that, I thought, wow,

that one got bad views. This video that I

uploaded last night about my dad got half

the views that one got, so if I left it

up, I think it would struggle to even get

over 10k views. It's just sad and

embarrassing when people see my channel

and they see a video that's done so

poorly. They think, wow, what's happened

to this guy's channel? Looks kind of dead.
