how much i spend in a month living in Bangkok

Today I want to talk about how much money

I spend every month living here in

Thailand. A couple months ago, back in

November of last year, I started to create

this Google spreadsheet tracking all of my

expenses— food, rent, travel expenses,

utilities, bills, stuff like that. So I

thought it'd be interesting to show you my

spreadsheet today and give you a rough

idea of how much it would cost to live in

Thailand. Okay, so first of

all, let's talk about food. Now, for some

reason, food is my most expensive expense,

even though I'm not a very big guy. As you

can see, I'm pretty skinny. I'm not huge,

but I spend a lot of money on food. So

let's have a look at November. I spent

£171 for my food, and that

includes buying food off Grab, usually

fast food like McDonald's, going to

restaurants, and grocery shopping. I

usually spend about £20 to £25 going

grocery shopping, and it really depends

which supermarket you go to. So the really

cheap supermarket is called Lotus, and if

I go there, I usually only spend about

£20. But then if I go to the fancy

international supermarket, which is called

Tops, I usually spend like £50 or £60.

I would say that most days I usually cook

my own food, so I go to the supermarket

maybe twice or 3 times a month to stock up

on vegetables and meats. I like to cook my

own food because I don't really like to go

to restaurants too much because it can be

quite expensive. And I like Western and

Japanese food, and those Western and

Japanese restaurants can be quite

expensive compared to just getting Thai

food at a Thai restaurant. So I do like

going to the supermarkets and picking my

own ingredients and creating my own

dishes. I try to avoid going to the big

fancy supermarkets because I do end up

spending a lot more money at those ones

because They just have more variety of

Western food that I really like, and the

prices are in general just a bit more

expensive than when you go to Lotus. And

then in December, I actually spent even

more money on food. I spent £322 on

food, and that was mainly because it was

Christmas, so maybe I splashed out a bit

more on fancy food. And I went to the

fancy international supermarket a couple

times. I went to Korean barbecue, and I

went to get Japanese food. I went to Don

Quijote and I bought some fancy wagyu

beef. And then I also had Christmas lunch

at some kind of international hotel buffet

and I had turkey. My Christmas lunch cost

about £68, so that was pretty expensive,

but it was quite a fancy hotel buffet

thing where they had a lot of food like

turkey and venison. So it was pretty good

but very expensive. If you eat a lot of

Western or Japanese food, then your food

bill is going to get quite expensive. But

if you only stick to Thai food, then I

think your food bill would be a lot

cheaper. For example, if you go to a food

court, you can get a pretty good meal for

only about 60 or 70 baht, and it's usually

going to be Thai food or like some kind of

Chinese Thai food. I don't really eat a

lot of Thai food because it can be very

spicy, and I'm just not very good at

handling spice, and I get stomach

problems. And then for January, I only

spent about £132 so far. Looks like

January is going to be a much cheaper

month for my food bill. And then next we

have my rent. There's not really much to

say about this. I pay about 10,000 baht

every month for my rent, which is £227.

I'll give you a quick tour of my

apartment. Okay, so here we have the main

living room. I think the apartment is

around 25 square meters. It's not massive,

but it's definitely the biggest apartment

I've ever had. And I even had an apartment

in Manchester which was about half the

size of this apartment, but the one in

Manchester cost about £890 for a month.

So compared to that, this one only costs

about £220 a month, and it's nearly double

the size, and it's much nicer. And every

single piece of furniture and the

television, fridge, washing machine, that

all came with the apartment. This is the

bedroom. As you can see, it's a pretty

spacious bedroom. It's got a nice view

with a nice big window and plenty of

storage. And then we have the kitchen.

The kitchen's quite small, but it's fine.

There's not much space on the countertop,

which is why it's always cluttered with

different appliances. We have a nice

balcony, and for cooking it's completely

fine. And then we also have the toilet,

which has a shower, sink, and a toilet. I

think it's completely okay. It's not

massive, but it's not really, really tiny.

But anyway, that's my apartment. It's only

about £220 a month. It's not massive, but

it's not really, really small, and I think

it's quite nice. And then for the

internet, I actually have a really good

internet. I have really fast 500 gigabit

upload and download speed, and it's

limited, and it only costs about £14 every

month, which is about 640 baht. Compared

to the UK, I used to pay about £40 a month

for unlimited broadband, so it's pretty

cheap here. And then for electricity, I

think electricity is roughly around £30.

Now I don't really go outside a huge

amount, and I spend a lot of time at home

inside on my computer, so I might use more

electricity than your average person. So

for rent and utilities, I would say

roughly around £270 every month. And then

we also have trips and travel expenses.

Sometimes I go out of Bangkok and I go

traveling to some other province. I

usually only go traveling maybe once every

few months. So for example, a couple of

weeks ago I went to Kanchanaburi and that

cost me about £125 for the

hotel. And then in November I went to Khao

Yai for my trip And that cost me about

£120 for 2 nights in Khao Yai. Khao Yai is

a really nice place. I really recommend

going there. Khao Yai was really cool

because it's like this big national park

within a mountainous region, and you can

drive through the mountains and it's very

pretty. And we actually saw a wild

elephant on the road whilst we were there,

so that was pretty cool.

So in total for November, I spent £171

for food, £274 for rent and utilities,

and £120 for travel,

which came to a total of £565.19

for the whole month. So on average, I

would say I spend about £500 to £600 a

month. Now I do have other expenses like

YouTube Premium, Netflix, Xbox Gaming

Pass, my UK phone bill— I still have to

pay for that every month— but that doesn't

really have anything to do with Thailand,

so I decided not to talk about it. And

then for December, I spent £322.91

on food, £270 on rent and utilities.

And actually, I didn't go anywhere in

December, so there was no travel expenses

apart from, I don't know, maybe like a

couple of pounds here and there for the

train. But in total for December, I spent

£596. And I think it's pretty amazing that

for only about £600 a month, I'm able to

live this pretty comfortable lifestyle

where I'm not really trying hard to save

money or budget money. I'm not trying to

eat only cheap food every day or not going

out at all. There's just no way you could

have this kind of lifestyle in the UK for

only about £600 a month. I think if I was

doing this exact same kind of lifestyle in

the UK, it would cost me like £1,500 a

month probably. Can you imagine living

close to the center of London in a fairly

decent apartment that has a swimming pool

and a gym in the building and going to

restaurants maybe once or twice every few

weeks, and also going traveling every

month, I reckon it would cost at least

over £2,000 a month if you're going to be

living like this in London. So yeah, I'm

always blown away at just how affordable

it is to live here in Thailand. And yeah,

it's pretty great. So I hope this video
