Sony wx500 1 day of usage - my thoughts

It's a bit windy today. It's raining and

I turned off the wind reduction, so I'm

not sure how the sound's going to be.

But if you turn wind reduction on, then

the audio doesn't sound very good. It's

like there's no bass to the audio. It's

actually starting to rain.

I wanted to like come outside and take

some pictures, but it looks like that's

not gonna happen.

So I wanted to talk about compact cameras.

If you're looking to buy a compact camera,

there are pretty much 2 types that are

available. You can get like the expensive

ones like the G7X and RX100 series,

and they're pretty compact and they have

like a fast lens, a 1.8 aperture

lens with a nice 1-inch sensor, so they're

really good in low light. But the problem

is they're really expensive. The G7X is

almost £400, and the RX100

series are pretty expensive. You can get

the Mark I or the Mark II for about £200 I

had the Mark 1, RX100 Mark 1 before. I

wasn't really impressed, to be honest.

The wide angle wasn't very wide, like it

was about this wide, and the autofocus was

really slow.

Focus distance was pretty bad as well, so

you couldn't really do macro. It's really

starting to rain. We chose a really bad

time to come outside. So I ended up

sending the RX100 back. And then on the

other hand, you have the super compact

zooms like the one I have,

and they're pretty cheap and they have a

nice long-range zoom like 30x optical

zoom. But the problem

is they're pretty rubbish in low light,

like when it's— when it gets dark, the

Video quality is about the same, probably

worse than my smartphone. That's because

it's not a fast lens, it's only f/3.5

aperture, and it has a small sensor. I

think my phone has like a f/1.8 aperture,

but the sensor is even smaller.

Anyway, I chose the superzoom compact over

like the more expensive G7X kind of

compacts because I want the zoom. I don't

really care about low light because I

don't really— usually I don't make videos

in the evening or the nighttime. All my

videos are done during the day, and by the

time it gets dark, I've finished making

videos and I'm editing and uploading, and

I've put the camera away. So I don't

really feel like I need a good low-light

camera, and I'd rather have the

versatility of a long-range zoom.

And the macro ability is really good on

this as well, so you can focus pretty

close. It's probably not gonna

do it now, but I'll try and do it. I hope

you can hear me. It's like it's raining

and above me is like a metal roof and it's

just clanging around.

So you can get like this close. Macro

mode. It's pretty good.

Can't really get any closer, but yeah, I

did some comparison, comparison videos

with my smartphone and this camera, and

my, my phone, my smartphone actually

looked better in low light. I don't know

why that is. I guess it's because it has a

lower aperture. But it's still super

grainy and pretty crappy looking. But the

zoom on this is just so amazing. You can

zoom in so far and the quality doesn't

decrease that badly. It's pretty usable.

There's not really anything I can zoom in

So you can zoom in this much.

If there are things in the foreground,

then it gets a bit confused. That's why it

doesn't focus very quickly. Also, there's

like a super fast zoom speed mode that

I turned on, and it zooms in and out

really quickly, but you can hear the

motor. You can probably hear it. But you

can do like a slower zoom, which is

silent. See, I'll do it now.

but if you zoom as fast as you can,

this camera. I feel like I,

for the same price, or the— well,

I need the flip-up screen, so I would have

had to get the, the Mark II.

Tricky. You have to kind of decide what

you want in a camera. Do you want

low-light capability, or do you want a

super zoom with more versatile lens?

I really panicked yesterday about the

audio, so I was desperately

searching for an app on the Android Play

Store that lets you edit the video's

audio, like an equalizer. I found loads of

music apps, like, that let you change the

bass and the treble, but you couldn't

save— save it as a new file with new sound

settings edited. So then for some reason

I decided to turn wind reduction off and

it fixed my problem. The bass came back,

treble went down.

So I feel really relieved. I don't know

how the wind's gonna sound. I suppose it

doesn't sound too bad. It just sounds

really trebly. Trebly? Do you understand

what I mean by trebly? I don't even know

if that's a real word.

But I guess it's better if it sounds

trebly if it's windy. Rather than just

constant wind noise.

Maybe I could get like a wind muff, like a

fluffy bit you put on the microphone.

Where is it? Here. It just looks kind of

silly, and they're pretty expensive.

They're about £12 to £15 just for a bit of

fluff, and you have to glue it onto the

camera. So if I wanted to sell this

camera, it might be difficult because

I've done like a modification.
