Steam Deck OLED vs ROG Ally vs Lenovo Legion GO - Which should you buy？

Hello, welcome back to a new video. So

today we're going to be comparing 3

handheld devices: the ROG Ally versus

the Steam Deck OLED versus the Lenovo

Legion Go. All very powerful gaming

handheld devices in their own respects.

Obviously, as you can see, I went for the

ROG Ally after extensively testing all of

the devices. I thought that for me

personally, I really like the ROG Ally,

but I'm not going to be biased in today's

video. I'm going to be giving all 3

devices a fair shot, and we're going to be

talking about the pros and cons of each of

the devices. So first of all, in terms of

physical size and portability, I would say

the ROG Ally is hands down the easiest one

to hold in my hands. It's smaller, it's

more dainty and lighter weight. The Steam

Deck is slightly wider but not by much.

And obviously the Legion Go is much, much

bigger and bulkier. It is a very chunky

boy sitting at 8.8 inches for its screen,

and it's also quite heavy with those big

fat detachable controllers. So if you're

going for size and you don't care about

size, then Legion Go would be the biggest

one and this one would be the smallest

one, with the Steam Deck OLED kind sitting

in the middle. Now, as it goes for

displays, we've got the Steam Deck OLED,

which obviously has the OLED display,

which has over 1,000 nits of brightness,

which is very bright when the sun is

shining. And the ROG Ally has a very

high-density, very high-quality, and

high-detailed LCD panel with VRR, which is

very good for sharpening up those low-res

textures. Now, as for Legion Go, it also

sports a less— an LCD panel, but it

doesn't have VRR. So some of the textures

in the games that you see on the Legion Go

are not going to be as crystal clear as

the ones you'll see on ROG Ally. So in

terms of power, the ROG Ally is actually

the most powerful gaming device out of the

3. Actually, I think Legion Go and ROG

Ally have the same chip, the Z1 Extreme,

and they have similar RAM and other

things. But the Steam Deck OLED has

slightly less powerful performance, but

you kind of sacrifice performance for

battery life and power efficiency because

it is running a lower power APU and

wattage. It means that it's using less

power to power the games. Even though the

graphics might not look as good as

something on this, you do get more battery

life and performance if you're out and

about on the go. So it's kind of up to

you. Do you want power over battery life?

Then go for the ROG Ally or the Legion Go.

If you want portability and battery life

and power efficiency, then you go for the

Steam Deck OLED with that brighter and

more vivid display. Now when it comes to

the body design, the ROG Ally has much

more compact— it has kind of like diagonal

Xbox thumbstick controllers. The Legion Go

also has similar button layout, and the

Steam Deck has horizontal thumbsticks with

trackpads and more back paddle buttons.

Now the main difference with the Legion

Go, obviously as you know already, it's

got that big kickstand which is very

useful, and it also has the detachable

controllers. So you can detach the

controllers, put up the kickstand, and

then sit back with the gamepad or

something like that, or even use the

detached controllers as a mouse. It turns

into a vertical makeshift mouse if you

clip it into the magnetic clip that goes

into the bottom. Now some people have said

that it's been great for accuracy in

first-person shooters, but then other

people have said it felt really weird and

awkward and it doesn't feel very good in

the hand. So I guess it depends if you

like that or not. I personally would not

use this and I would just use a regular

mouse if I detach the controllers, or I'd

use a wired controller so I could play

some games whilst it props up on the

kickstand. Now if you don't really care

about that, then the Steam Deck has like

the traditional button layout, same with

the ROG Ally, and that's kind of like a

bog-standard controller handheld layout

without the fancy detachable controllers.

The thing is, with the handheld gaming

market, it is very oversaturated right now

and there's a lot of competition in the

space. So Lenovo has tried to stand out

from the crowd by doing this detachable

controller thing. Don't know if it was the

best idea. I don't really see many use

cases for it because they didn't make a

grip. Like, the Joy-Con grip for the

Switch was great because you can detach

controllers and turn it into one normal

controller. They don't seem to have made

that for Lenovo, which I think they've

missed a great opportunity to do so. You

also have to consider the operating

system. So the Legion Go and the ROG Ally

obviously run on Windows 11, and based on

Windows 11 depends what you want to do

with it. You can turn it into a fully

fledged standalone computer just with

Windows 11, or you could go for the Steam

Deck which has SteamOS. And if you just

want to only use it for gaming, then

SteamOS is actually a better kind of like

interface for gaming handhelds than

anything ASUS or Lenovo have managed to

come up with. Armoury Crate is okay, but

it's not perfect, especially compared to

SteamOS. It's nowhere near as good as

SteamOS. But if you don't really care

about that and you do want a device that

can do all kinds of things, then maybe the

Steam Deck OLED is not the one to go for.

Although it does have a desktop mode and

Linux is okay as an operating system, you

can download quite a few programs on it

like OBS and there's other things, like

photo editing and image editing software

that is available to Linux, you will be

severely gimped because you don't get

everything on Linux whilst everything is

on Windows 11. Can you get Streamlabs on

Linux? Can you get Filmora or any kind of

video editing software? Maybe you can, I

don't think you can. So it kind of depends

what you're looking to use it for. If you

just want to do gaming on the go with

maximum battery efficiency and you don't

really care too much about graphics, then

the Steam Deck OLED is a great device to

go for. But if you want something with a

bit more power and a bit more oomph and a

bigger screen and a kickstand, and you

want to detach the controllers so you have

like a sleek tablet experience on your

desktop with a keyboard and mouse plugged

in with an external monitor, then the

Lenovo Legion Go is actually a great

option. And I would go for that if I

hadn't already bought the ROG Ally. And

the ROG Ally is kind of like a great

in-between. It is portable, but it's also

very powerful, but doesn't have the great

battery Steam Deck has, but it doesn't

have the massive footprint or the massive

bulk and weight of the Legion Go. Many

people have been saying that because the

Legion Go is so big, it's kind of

uncomfortable to hold it. All the buttons

are located at the top of the controller,

which makes it kind of weird because

usually you would hold the entire device

with it resting in the middle of your palm

for stability. But if you do that unless

you have freakishly long fingers like me,

you probably won't be able to reach the

top of the controller where the buttons

are. So you're gonna have to create a new

claw kind of gripping and holding style

to be able to hold it comfortably whilst

also having the buttons within your thumb

and fingers reach. So it is something to

consider. Maybe you're a girl or you're

very small and you have small hands, then

getting your hands wrapped around the

bulky Legion Go might be a bit more

difficult. Difficult, and you might prefer

something like the ROG Ally, which is much

smaller. Now when it comes to price

points, they're all similarly priced

because they're trying to be competitive,

but the Steam Deck OLED is actually

cheaper than all of them. It comes in at

around $500 for the Steam Deck OLED base

version, whereas the Zealot Extreme, I

think it's like $600 right now, but

usually it's, usually it's $700 without

the sale. And the Legion Go is actually

the the most expensive, sitting around

$750 or even $800. You can get the

cheapest Steam Deck for like $300 now,

the non-OLED version, and the cheapest ROG

Ally is like $400, not for the Z1 Extreme

version. So if you have a big budget,

then you could splash out, get Legion Go.

If you want to save money and get the

cheapest one, then the Steam Deck seems

like it's the way to go.
