My problem with the new OLED Switch

Hi, so as an avid Switch gamer who plays

a lot of Switch games, as you may have

seen, my most popular videos on this

channel are mostly Switch game reviews,

you can imagine that I got pretty excited

at the announcement of the new Switch

which is coming out in October. And people

were rumourating, speculating about a

Switch Pro coming out. Unfortunately,

this new Switch that's coming out is not

the Switch Pro, it's not a Switch 2, It's

really, really disappointing. So it's

called the OLED Switch. Let me get a

picture for you. So this is the brand new

OLED Switch, which is coming out soon. As

you can imagine from the name, it's

basically just an upgraded screen. That's

it. There's no hardware updates. There's

barely any new games. I think there's like

one new game that comes with it that they

are announcing along with it. So it says

the OLED model's main feature is its OLED

screen. Apparently that's supposed to be

better than the LCD screen, a technology

which offers deeper blacks and better

colours than most LCD screens like those

on the original Switch, and it will cost

an extra £50 or $50 than the current

model, but the new revision does not

feature some of the improvements fans may

have expected. It's just kind of

disappointing because the whole update is

just a slightly bigger screen. So this

screen is— the one I'm holding is a Switch

Lite. It's a 5.5-inch screen, and it's

slightly smaller than the original Switch,

which has a 6.2-inch screen. And the OLED

Switch has a 7-inch screen. So the

difference between 7 inches and 6.2 inches

is not really that noticeable. Unless

maybe you're a woman, then maybe it is

pretty noticeable, but I don't know

because I'm not a woman. I don't know if

the difference between 5.5 inches and 7

inches is very noticeable. I can't imagine

it. I would expect that the edges of this

screen where my thumb is, if you include

that, then that's probably 7 inches, and

that's not a massive difference really.

They should make like a big version,

10-inch. Why don't they just go 10-inch?

Even 7 inches is pretty small. The main

reason why I didn't like playing on my

Switch anymore and I went back to playing

my iPad Pro is because the iPad Pro screen

is just way bigger. Look at the size of

this.

Now can you imagine if they came out with

a Switch which had a size, a screen size

of the iPad Pro, which is 11 inches?

Maybe that's a bit too big, but they could

have made it 8 or 9 inches. But then I

guess they would have had to increase the

battery size because bigger screen means

means it needs more battery. It would be

so funny if they just had like a 10-inch

size tablet for the Switch bit and then on

the sides had these tiny Joy-Con

controllers. I don't think that would be

such a bad idea. The main reason I don't

like playing the Switch anymore is because

this screen is just so damn small.

And the other upgrades to the OLED Switch

is they've just made a fat stand.

So, you know, the original Switch, the

kickstand was so skinny and pathetic. It

was just like a little strip of plastic

that any breeze could blow over, knock it

over, and you had to place it on a really

stable surface like a table. If you tried

placing it on something that's unstable,

like a sofa or a bed mattress or a bed

covering or a pillow, it would just be

completely hopeless. There's no chance it

would be able to stand up. And they

placed— on the original Switch, they

placed the kickstand in a really stupid

place on the side, like, um, around here,

instead of in the middle, which would give

it more stability. So the OLED Switch now

has a really fat kickstand which goes from

the entire bottom. It's kind of like a

rip-off of the Surface Pro, the Microsoft

Surface Pro kickstand, which was just

basically the entire back half of the

tablet was a kickstand, and they've kind

of done the same with the OLED Switch,

which is great if you really play a

lot of Switch with the kickstand out,

which I never do, which is why I got the

Switch Lite. You see, the problem with

using the kickstand is usually you would,

you would have the Switch not very close

to you because it'll be on a surface, on a

table, and you'd be sitting on a chair,

and you'd just be kind of hunched over

staring at this tiny screen The

kickstand's only good if you're using a

big screen like a 10-inch tablet or

12-inch tablet. When the screen is this

small, even the 7 inches is kind of small,

it's kind of uncomfortable using it. The

only place you would want to use it is on

a plane when you've got the front dinner

tray thing extended, you want to place it

on there. Then yeah, that's, that's the

only, that's the only situation I would

imagine myself using it in. But if you're

at home, you might as well just connect it

to the TV using the dock. Why, why would

you use the kickstand and play on your

table when you could play on your TV?

It's just kind of stupid. Also, the

resolution of this 7-inch new OLED screen

is pretty much the same as this, 720p.

Not even 1080p. Where's the 4K, Nintendo?

I know 4K would just drain the battery in

10 minutes, but the people want 4K. And

since the resolution is staying the same

at 720p and the screen's bigger, won't it

mean— won't it mean that the graphics are

going to be less sharp and they're going

to be more easily— you'll be able to see

the pixels more easily because the

screen's bigger but they haven't increased

the resolution? And then there's some

extra really tiny insignificant updates.

So they've, they've improved the speakers

a little bit. That's not really a huge

problem with the current speakers. I think

they sound fine, and if you're really that

obsessed with the sound, then you're going

to get headphones or speakers

for your ears because, you know, you'd be

like one of those audio nerds. And then

the other improvement is they've added

wired LAN connection inside of the dock,

which again I think is kind of pointless

because pretty much everyone has a Wi-Fi

connection in their house. I've got super

fast fiber optic Wi-Fi here and I would

just connect it wirelessly. I don't want

to connect some LAN cable like it's the

1990s, but it seems like Japan is stuck in

the 1990s when it comes to a lot of

things. So yeah, a bit of a disappointing

update. No reason to get it if you already

have the Switch Lite or the original

Switch. Maybe if you don't have any

Switch, then it's a good one to get. If

you want to get a Switch and you don't

have one, then the OLED Switch is the one

to go for. Since it's slightly better than

the other ones. But that's Nintendo for

you. When they've got a good thing going,

they'll put in the least amount of effort

and just milk things and drag things out

as long as they can. They've been milking

Mario for like 50 years now since it first

came out, and they're still milking it.

How many Mario games are there? There's

like 100 billion Mario games now. And

every time they come out with a new

console, they end up releasing 10, 10

different versions of it before the next

one comes out. Remember the Nintendo DS

and then the DS 3D and the DS 2D and

the DS XL and the DS 3D

XL? There was just so many iterations of

the bloody Nintendo DS, and I guess

they're going to do the same with the

Switch. I guess it makes sense because

over the last year, because of lockdowns,

everyone was stuck at home. They wanted to

get into gaming. Apparently Nintendo has

had amazing record sales for the Switch.

So there doesn't seem to be any incentive

for Nintendo to really pull their finger

out and push out a new Switch Pro when

they've got all-time high sales on their

current hardware. It doesn't make any

sense to release new hardware whilst it's

still selling like hotcakes. But Nintendo,

that's Nintendo for you. They're really

good at running a business. That's why

they make so much money. And, um, yeah, I

don't know when the Switch Pro comes out.

I don't think I'd buy any more Switches.

This is my second Switch. I had this

Switch original, but then I got rid of it,

and then I wanted to play Mario Kart

again, so I got this one, Switch Lite.

Um, I don't feel like the OLED Switch is

enough improvement for me to want it. So

yeah, that's what my review, and that's

why I think OLED Switch sucks.
