I was SO Wrong about the Steam Deck!

Hello, welcome back to a new video. So

recently I made a fairly critical video

about my Steam Deck here, and I think that

maybe I was a bit overly harsh in my

critiques of the Steam Deck. One of my

main complaints about the Steam Deck in

that previous video was that it was just

too big and bulky. If you can see by the

size of it, it is quite big and your hands

are very far apart when you're holding the

Steam Deck, which can also be kind of

uncomfortable when you're used to using an

Xbox controller, which would have your

hands closer together. And also took up

way more space in my backpack than I

expected it to. I realize now that those

are kind of silly nitpicky criticisms,

and after doing a lot of thinking, I

decided that I've changed my mind. I don't

want to sell my Steam Deck anymore, and

actually I think I will be taking it to my

trip— on my trip to Thailand and also

Japan, which I plan to go to after I

finish with Thailand. I managed to get a

2-month visa for Thailand, a tourist visa,

which I can extend up to 90 days. So

hopefully I am planning to stay Thailand

for 3 months if I like Thailand. And yes,

I will be bringing the Steam Deck, and

that is because of one or two reasons.

Number one, I did a backpack test recently

where I loaded up all the gear that I want

to take to Thailand and Japan, and I

included the Steam Deck. And it turns out

that it's not actually that heavy. Yes,

it is very heavy when you try to lift the

bag with one hand, but when I put the

backpack on my shoulders, it doesn't

really feel heavy at all, even with a

MacBook, an iPad Pro, a Steam Deck, 4

mobile phones, a live U-encoder, and

multiple battery banks, I realized that

the backpack wasn't as heavy as I thought

it would be, and I don't really feel like

it's going to be a problem. I think in my

mind, I kind of think that when I go to

Japan or Thailand, when I'm traveling,

I'm going to be non-stop traveling and

doing lots of fun things and seeing new

places and experiencing things. But I

think in reality, I would not be doing

that constantly, and it's not like I'm

going to be so busy that I won't have any

time for gaming at all. I think there's

going to be a lot of times when I don't

really have any plans or maybe the

weather's really bad and I don't really

want to go anywhere and I'm kind of just

stuck inside. And it's times like that I

think having the Steam Deck would be

pretty good. I just feel like I'd be so

bored if it was like a typhoon and raining

loads, or I didn't have any plans and no

one wanted to meet me, and I've already

been everywhere so I don't really know

what to do, and I was just kind of stuck

inside and I didn't have any games to play

apart from crappy mobile games which are

really boring and I never play. And the

games on the Switch are not really that

great. I'm not really a big fan of

Nintendo games, and the only reason I got

a Switch Lite was just to play a few CDX

games that I was interested in at the

time. And I don't really feel like

bringing the gaming laptop is an option

because it's just too big, it's too bulky,

it's going to take up too much room in my

backpack, and it's going to hurt my back

when I have to go around to places. It's

also got this massive brick of a charging

brick, and that's just almost as big as

the Steam Deck itself. So this is the

charging brick for my Razer Blade 17-inch

gaming Pro laptop with an RTX 3060.

This charging brick is so big. It's like

almost as big as the Switch Lite. It

weighs almost as much as the Steam Deck as

well. So if I had to decide between the

gaming laptop and the Steam Deck for a pro

gaming console to bring on the go, then I

would definitely choose the Steam Deck

over the laptop. And if I find myself

where I move in with my girlfriend in

Thailand and I find myself stuck in one

place for a long period of time in her

apartment, then having a Steam Deck

wouldn't be so bad because I could just

buy additional things to turn the Steam

Deck into basically a laptop or desktop

setup, I could buy an additional keyboard,

I could bring my mouse. I can also plug

this into her TV, or maybe I could even

get a monitor of my own to plug this in

and turn it into a desktop computer.

That's one of the great things about the

Steam Deck is the versatility it brings to

the table. With a laptop, you're kind of

stuck with how it is. You can't really cut

off the keyboard, you can't really fold it

in half or do much else with it. You're

stuck with the form factor that it's built

in. But with the Steam Deck, it's built in

this small form factor which is great,

but you can also add to it. You can add

extra things like you put a stand there

and then get a little keyboard for there,

and then you can turn it into like a mini

desktop computer, which I think is a

really cool idea. Also, another weird

thing I noticed after getting the Steam

Deck and playing some games on it, it's

kind of made me feel interested again in

certain types of games that I kind of got

bored of playing on the PC. A few of these

games would include Hitman 3 and Sea of

Thieves and even Elden Ring, which were

games I played a lot on the PC maybe

earlier this year, I played about 500

hours on Elden Ring and nearly 100 hours

on Hitman, and I felt like I was done with

those games. I didn't really feel like

booting them up anymore on my gaming

laptop to play on my big 32-inch monitor.

So when I got the Steam Deck, I decided,

well, I'm not going to buy any new games

straight away because I'm not sure how to—

I'm not sure what kind of games I want to

play on a Steam Deck yet. So I started

playing these games that I thought I was

bored of playing, but this time on the

Steam Deck. And it was kind of weird

because I really enjoyed playing these

games again, but in a different way.

There's something very casual feeling

about booting up a game on your Steam Deck

compared to booting it up on your hardcore

PC gaming setup, where you kind of have to

think in— into the future and plan ahead

and think, yeah, I'm going to dedicate

this evening to playing this video game.

And you kind of have to switch off

everything else because it's kind of

distracting to have shows or music on at

the same time whilst you're trying to feel

immersed in a gaming experience when

you're playing on your gaming laptop on

your desktop. But when you play games on a

Steam Deck, there's like a casual feeling

to it. You can just have the TV on in in

the background, have some podcasts playing

on YouTube on your gaming laptop monitor,

and then you can just sit back and relax

and play some video games on the Steam

Deck. And it's kind of weird because some

of these video games, for example, I think

Sea of Thieves, when you play on a

desktop, it's kind of a very immersive

game. You don't really want to be doing

anything else whilst you're playing Sea of

Thieves because you want to communicate

with the other players and you're kind of

focused on what you're doing, sailing the

ship and stuff like that. But when you go

and play on the Steam Deck, it turns it

into a different gaming experience. It

becomes a much more casual and laid-back

game, even though fundamentally it's

exactly the same game, you're just playing

it in a different way, in a different form

factor. It's like it gives you a new way

of enjoying games that you got tired of in

the past and it makes them enjoyable

again. I think that's really a special and

unique feature that only the Steam Deck

really has. I mean, sure, you can get a

gaming laptop in a smaller form factor,

but still, it's like you're playing it on

the computer with a mouse and keyboard and

it doesn't really feel the same as holding

it in your hands. When got a video game in

your hands like this, it turns a serious

gaming experience into a more casual and

laid-back experience, which I think in

some situations when you're watching a

podcast and you just wanna play some video

games, this is much more ideal. So even

though I was fairly harsh with my previous

video, I do see that the Steam Deck has

some positives to it as well. And maybe

it's not really that heavy or big to slot

into a backpack if you're going travelling

for a bit. You won't really notice it that

much compared to a gaming laptop. So as of

right now, I'm thinking that I will bring

it with me to Thailand. I just really

don't know if I'm going to be using it a

huge amount. I guess we'll have to find

out, but it'll be really bad and it would

really suck if I decided not to bring it

and then I found myself in a situation

where I've got a lot of free spare time,

don't know what to do, and I really want

to do some gaming but I've got nothing to

game with, and then I end up buying

another Steam Deck, which That would just

be so silly, wouldn't it?
