Pick M3 MacBook Pro Instead of ROG Ally： Here's Why

Hello, welcome back to a new video. So as

some of you may know already, I recently

bought this brand new M3 MacBook Pro base

model for about $1,700, and I decided

to sell my ROG Ally. Now you might

remember my ROG Ally was my main computer

for the recent last month or two, and that

was my main computer. I did everything on

it. I did all my gaming, my video editing,

live streaming, internet stuff, managing

my business, chatting to people. I did

everything on that connected to an

external monitor. And I'm going to Japan

soon and I want a light travel backpack.

And I thought the ROG Ally would be the

perfect travel computer because it's so

small, it weighs like 600 grams and it'll

be perfect in my backpack. But then I

realized I need a desktop kind of setup

that's portable. And when I started adding

things to the ROG Ally like external

keyboard, external mouse, external

monitor, which I could get like a 15 or

12-inch external AMOLED monitor, after I

add in all those things, it's not so

lightweight anymore. And basically I'm

just building like a, like a very

non-unconventional self-built laptop. I'm

just buying all of the components of a

laptop that all fit together separately in

external ways. So there was like no

point of having the ROG Ally for its

portability if it's no longer very

portable anymore, because I basically just

built my own laptop by adding things to

it. And the price point, although it's

only $600, $700, when you add the monitor

and the keyboard and all that stuff, it

eventually comes to over $1,000 to build

the ROG desktop experience. And I thought

to myself, instead of having all these

separate things that you have to like put

together, why don't I just get a laptop?

And I had a laptop before the ROG Ally,

and I sold it because it was too heavy.

It had the Razer Blade 17-inch pro gaming

laptop with RTX 3060 graphics card, and it

weighed like 5 kilograms. It's too heavy

for my backpack, so I decided to get the

M3 MacBook Pro because this thing is ultra

lightweight. Look at that, it's so thin,

it's so slim, and it's so light, and it's

so great. I really like it. It's the best

laptop I've had so far, really powerful.

The M3 chip is no joke, guys. You can play

games on this. I played Cult of the Lamb

60 FPS, and there's loads of games

available on it like Resident Evil 4,

Resident Evil Village. Many games are

coming to it as well because of the new

A13 chip, so it is quite capable for

gaming. It's just the problem is a lot of

games are not on it. My favourite games

recently have been Red Dead Redemption 2,

that was really fun. Now I can't play it

anymore. I was really looking forward to

seeing what would happen to Arthur and the

gang. Now I won't know, I guess. And I

used to like playing Rainbow Six, but I

can't play that on this. So you do have to

sacrifice the ability to play a lot of

your favourite games, but that's okay

because, you know, I'm going to Japan,

I'm travelling, I need a lightweight

solution. I'm not going to Japan to sit

there playing Red Dead Redemption 2, am I?

So a lot of people buy these handheld

gaming devices like Steam Decks, Legion

Go, Aya Neos, GDPs, and ROG Ally because

they want a portable gaming device. Well,

as someone who's had nearly all of them,

had the Steam Deck and ROG Ally, as

someone who had some of the devices and

wants a portable gaming device as well, I

kind of recommend the M3 MacBook Pro.

Now you might be thinking I'm talking a

load of rubbish. Why would I recommend the

MacBook for gaming? Well, it's like I said

earlier, This has plenty of games. Maybe

I'll show you later my Steam collection.

I'll show you some gaming so you— so I can

show you and you can see what the gaming

capability is like. But this MacBook has

plenty of games. Okay, you're gonna have

to be a bit fussy because, I mean, you

can't be too fussy because you won't have

all the games available to Windows. And

you're gonna have to go through the Mac

Store— I mean, the App Store and the Steam

Store— and filter by OS, by Mac only, and

see what kind of games you can get. But

I'm pretty sure you'll find some games

that you will like. And this is a very

portable machine. Okay, it's not as

portable as a Steam Deck, but if you want

to play on the Steam Deck or the ROG Ally

with a tiny itty-bitty 7-inch screen and

you don't want to play keyboard and mouse,

then okay, maybe those are better. But if

you want keyboard and mouse and you want a

big screen, then this is obviously better.

You've got a 14-inch screen, you've got

keyboard and mouse, you can plug in a

controller as well. It's got great

speakers, great screen, great performance

because of the M3 chip. So you can play

AAA games that are not super modern.

Like, you can play, uh, Resident Evil 4

Remake, Resident Evil 7, even Death

Stranding's coming to the Apple Store,

the Game Arcade, whatever it's called.

It's coming to the store quite soon.

So you do have options when it comes to

gaming. And this is obviously a

productivity powerhouse. You can't really

get a lot of work done on an ROG Ally

unless you have very good eyesight, or

you're going to sit there squinting at the

tiny 7-inch screen, or get a portable

monitor, which at that point you might as

well just get a MacBook because you're

going to buy all these external

peripherals and then create this

monstrosity Frankenstein of a wannabe

laptop that's not really a laptop, it's

just different things all slapped

together, when you could just get this

sleek all-in-one device which has

everything you need— keyboard, trackpad,

plug in a mouse, display, great battery

life. I reckon this thing has a better

battery life than the ROG Ally. I mean,

the ROG Ally has on battery I could get

about an hour, an hour and a half on

gaming, and I probably get 7

hours on battery when I'm just like

not gaming. When I'm gaming, I probably

get a couple hours. On full battery mode,

I can get like 5 or 6 hours without this

plugged in. So the battery life

performance on this thing is just so much

better than what you can get in those tiny

handhelds, and that's mainly because it's

just bigger, and bigger means you get a

bigger battery. Okay, so I've got Steam

opened here, and I'll just show you. If

you click on this little Apple sign here,

you can sort games that are available on

macOS. And I've got Alien: Isolation,

Counter-Strike 2: Darkest Dungeon, This

War of Mine. I've got loads of games. All

of the Total War games are on MacBook.

And then if you go into the search bar and

then scroll down and then look for the

filter see Narrow by OS and click on

macOS, it will show you games only

available on Mac. And oh my God, there's

loads of games. You've even got Baldur's

Gate 3, which only came out recently. It

was a very highly acclaimed, popular

modern game. So if you want to play

Baldur's Gate 3 on Mac, you can. You've

got War Thunder, Rust, Football Manager,

Elder Scrolls Online, Stellaris, Dave the

Diver, Dota 2, Project Zomboid, Path of

Exile, Lies of P. Actually, I wanted to

play Uh, Path of Exile because I like

Diablo 4, but that's not on MacBook. So I

heard Path of Exile is actually better

than Diablo 4, so I might even check out

this game, although it's quite an old

game. So yeah, you've got Sid Meier's

Civilization VI, that's quite a good game.

Crusader Kings, Lies of P is a very modern

game as well. You've got Stray,

Farming Simulator, there's tons of games I

don't know what people are saying when

they say, oh, Macs are not good for

gaming. There's loads of games. Cuphead,

7 Ways to Die, Planet Coaster.

You even got Sim— what's it called—

Cities: Skylines on it. Then if you go

onto the Apple Arcade Store, you got

Resident Evil 4, which I actually

downloaded. I might try it in a minute.

Got Lies of P. Yeah, you got loads of

games. Plenty of games if you want a

portable gaming device. I don't think the

MacBook is a bad choice. Death Stranding

Director's Cut coming soon.

It's not that Macs can't play games,

it's very capable. It's just the

developers are too lazy to port their

games over to Mac, but I think that will

change coming soon. So I've got Resident

Evil 4 Remake booted up. It's really

annoying because Capcom makes you scroll

through the terms of service to consent,

as if anyone's going to read that. So

let's see what Resident Evil 4 is like on

MacBook. You can hear the fans spinning up

For some reason this game is free.

Surely it can't be free.

Oh my god, very scary.

Standard mode. I don't know what FPS

we're getting because I don't know how to

track the FPS. In Steam it has a built-in

in-game FPS counter, but this doesn't seem

to.

So for some reason my mouse doesn't move

on the screen anymore.

It's probably just loading.

I don't know,

I don't know why it's all black. I can

hear sound,

there's sound, but the screen is

black for some reason.

Okay, for some reason I couldn't get

Resident Evil 4 to work. It just kept

loading a black screen, so I loaded up

Alien: Isolation. It's a bit of an old

game, but it still looks pretty good. And

as you can see, yeah, it works

perfectly fine. Can move around,

graphics look good.

So yeah, you could play games on this.

It's just some games might not work or

might have problems, and then a lot of

games are just completely not available.

So explore the Torrens. I'll show you some

gameplay.

This kind of looks like Starfield for some

reason. Why is this really giving me

Starfield vibes?

Yeah, it's a lot like— it looks just like

Starfield. The hell? Like the whiteness

and the blockiness of the space hab

interior. Like, this looks like something

straight out of Starfield.

This was a pretty good game when it came

out.

And maybe I'll show you a different game

because nothing much happens in this one.

Okay, here we have Cult of the Lamb. This

game is quite good as well. And you can

see we've got, what, 56 FPS top left

corner. It feels so smooth, buttery

smooth. You could completely play this

game easily, and the screen looks great.

Put brightness on max. The, the mini LCD—

I mean, the mini LED screen of the MacBook

Pro really does look amazing when you play

these games because it blacks out the

blacks. And the HDR contrast

looks so clear.

I think I'm sick. The game looks amazing.

The screen looks so good, better than the

ROG Ally for sure. Put some sound on.

The sound's very loud. My nose

is running.

I used to play this game a lot. It used to

be very fun. Yeah, it's a fun little

game. You can spend a couple hours playing

this if you're like

waiting in the airport. I don't know how

much battery it's going to use. Maybe play

a couple minutes. The problem with the ROG

Ally is If you're in the airport and you

don't have a battery bank, you're not

going to be able to do a lot of gaming.

You can also plug this in, plug a

controller into this, put it on the back

of the plane seat, and then prop it up,

sit back, play some games.

This would be a great way to do it.

So yeah, MacBook Pro M3, pretty good for

gaming. You might even say it's better

than the ROG Ally in many ways. Okay,

obviously it's a lot more expensive. The

ROG Ally cost me $700, this cost me

$1,700. So yeah, it's $1,000

extra, but what you get in return is you

get really nice premium build quality,

really powerful computer. This feels way

smoother than the ROG Ally did.

The M3 chip is way better than the Z1

Extreme chip. Okay, the Z1 Extreme chip is

slightly better than the M2 chip, but

that's not fair because M2 chip came out

last year and the Z1 came out this year,

and it's like a 4-nanometer chip. The M3

is using 3-nanometer typography

lithography, so it's kind of similar

in terms of when it came out.

So this chip is obviously going to be

better than the Z1 Extreme chip.

Yeah, I think I proved my point. Pretty

capable gaming machine.
