How to Paint a Face with Acrylic Brushes - Painting Tutorial [iPad Pro]

Hello and welcome back to a new video.

So today I want to show you how I painted

a face using the acrylic brushes in

Procreate on my iPad Pro.

So I guess you could say this is kind of a

different way of doing a face than what I

usually do.

Usually I would start off with very clean

and thick black outlines for the eyes and

the features of the face, And that's like

a very easy way of doing a face.

I felt like doing a face this way is a lot

more challenging and has more of a

painterly kind of style.

And we're going to be starting off by just

laying out like an egg shape, a human egg

shape of a head, and blocking out some

skin color, dark shades, and light tones,

whilst also doing some of the features of

the face using a dark brown color.

Now over the course of this video, you'll

notice that she starts off looking really

ugly and like a deformed weirdo and slowly

gets slightly more attractive towards the

end of the video.

Although, you know, it wasn't completely

possible to make her really beautiful

because, you know, sometimes you just

start off with a face and it doesn't

matter how much you try to fix it, they

were just born ugly.

So unfortunately this was the best I could

do with this person, but I think she came

out not looking too bad anyway.

So we started off with the darker shades

of skin and applied some highlights onto

the cheeks, the chins, the nose, and some

highlights on the forehead.

And we did have to move the eyes around

because they look kind of weird.

And as you can see, the mouth area looks

kind of weird at this moment as well.

So we also block in the colors for the

hair, starting off with dark brown and

then adding in darker highlights coming in

from the root of the scalp.

Also adding some nice orange highlights.

I wanted to go for like a brownie, mousy

brown, orangey kind of bob cut.

I guess it's called a bob cut.

I'm not really sure what kind of hairstyle

this is called, but I like to give it— I

would like to give her this kind of

tomboyish look, you know.

Maybe she doesn't really care too much

about fashion and looking super girly, but

she still looks kind of cute naturally

anyway.

I would say the main challenge and

difficulty of this project was choosing

the correct tones for the skin.

Now you could say, why don't you just go

for dark brown?

And yeah, you could do like a dark brown

for the shade shadows of the skin, but

dark brown looks kind of boring.

So I wanted to add a bit of color, and I

went for more of like an orangey brown for

the shadows of the

skin.

If you're wondering what brush I'm using,

I'm using the wet acrylic brush.

I did try the normal acrylic brush and

that was okay too, but I liked how the wet

acrylic just seems to flow better and it

also blends with the other colors more

easily than the normal acrylic brush.

So I feel like the acrylic brush was

better.

I did try the oil brush, but the oil brush

is just like a massive smudgy mess, and

it's basically like using the smudge tool.

It smudges everything so much, it's just

basically impossible to paint anything

with the oil brush, I feel.

So after finishing most of the face and

deciding where the highlights are gonna

be, I started to experiment with different

colors for the background because just a

pure white background kind of boring to

look at.

I settled for this nice turquoisey blue.

Some call it cyan, but you know, I don't

really know what the official colors of

every single shade of color is called, so

I just called it like a bluish color.

And I added some of the blue to the hair

as highlights, kind of like the hair is

reflecting some of the background, so it

feels like the background is actually in

the background and and the character is

still there in front of it.

So I put the colors of the background on

the face as well, so it looks like the

light of the background is hitting the

character, even though, I don't know,

maybe she's in like a room with 4 walls

that all have this background color.

Because the background's behind her,

technically the light of the background

wouldn't be hitting the front of her face,

it'd be hitting the back of her head.

But that doesn't really matter, because at

the end of the day, What is actually

physically possible is less important than

what looks good.

That's always been my rule.

I don't care if the sun is coming up from

the right, but if the character looks

better with the light sources hitting the

left side of her face instead of the right

side, then I would just disobey the laws

of physics.

Because I mean, this is my painting, I can

do whatever the hell I want.

It's my little world I've created.

I don't care if it's not possible for

light to bend around the character.

Maybe in my world it is possible.

I can do whatever the hell I want, okay?

So we're kind of doing the finishing

touches to the face.

I feel like it came out pretty well.

I did have to make massive adjustments to

her oversized chin and jaw, which seems to

be a problem I often make, is I make the

chin too big and then they look kind of

manly.

I'm trying to work on that.

I think this one came out okay.

I like the blue eyes and added some darker

blacks around the eyes to make them pop a

little bit more.

I also added some purple highlights around

the face and the hair to make her a bit

more colorful looking.

Overall, I do feel like this came out

looking pretty good, even though it's not

a style of doing a face that I'm usually

used to because I'm used to just sketching

out the complete face in black lines first

and then adding color.

So starting off with the color and then

adding the details on later is— for me,

it's like doing everything back to front,

doing it in reverse.

So it was kind of a strange but also

interesting little experiment to play

around doing things in a different way

than how I usually do them.

But I think that's also an important part

of growth and self-improvement is when you

try and break out of how you usually do

things and try something new.

So I hope you like my painting using the

And the software used to make this was

called Procreate, very good piece of

software which actually records and each

of your brush strokes and allows you to

turn it into a time-lapse video.
