It actually felt GOOD!

It's actually bright. I haven't seen

daylight for such a long time. Look,

it's not dark outside. No, I didn't wake

up early. It's— what time is it? It's like

half past 3. It looks so weird

when you can actually see outside and it's

not pitch black. It starts to get really

depressing when all you can see is black.

Look, I dropped a bauble. Put this, put

this somewhere here. Oh,

try again.

Haha. I don't know what it is about

Christmas trees, but there's something

nice about it, isn't there?

Doesn't make any sense. I mean, why do we

bring in a tree, put it in the house, and

then cover it in crap? It doesn't make

any sense, but It's nice for some reason.

Anyway, something happened last night that

was quite nice. So I'm not really the kind

of person that enjoys helping people.

I've never really gone out of my way to

try and help someone, and that's because

I've never really felt like, wow, I feel

really good for helping this person. I

want to help more people. And I've always

felt like there's something wrong with me,

like why don't I want to help people. Why

don't I feel good about helping people?

Is there something wrong with me? Well,

this woman came in last night and she

asked me, do you have an iPhone? And I

thought she meant, do you sell iPhones

here? And I said, no, we don't have

iPhones. And then she said, no, I mean,

do you personally have an iPhone? And I

said, no, I don't. I have a, I have an

Android phone. And then she said that she

can't turn the flashlight off her iPhone.

You know you can— you know you swipe up on

iPhones and there's a flashlight button

and it turns on the LED flash so you can

use it as a flashlight? Well, she couldn't

turn it off, and I said, have you tried

swiping up? And then she said, yeah, but

the flashlight notification thing isn't

there. That's because on iPhones you swipe

up— this is the same with iPad as well,

it's the same for iOS— but you swipe up

from the bottom, you have 2 notification

tabs, and you have to swipe left to right

to switch between the two. Well, she had

switched— she had swiped right to go to

the music bit, so obviously the flashlight

button wasn't there. And she was so,

like, upset and stressed out about it.

She was like, oh, I can't find where the

flashlight button is, please help me. And

I said, you just have to swipe left, and

all the notification buttons reappeared,

the flashlight. And she was like She was

so amazed, like I had just performed magic

or some kind of amazing thing

on her magical— some kind of magical feat

on her phone. And I just said, that's

okay, my dad has an iPhone and he's always

complaining about it and asking me how to

do things, and it's not even my phone.

This is what I don't understand about old

people and technology. Why are old people

so— yeah, she was— I think she was maybe

in her 40s or nearing 50s. But why are old

people so terrible when it comes to

technology? They're completely useless.

They're always moaning about it,

smartphones and computers. They're always

having problems, and they don't seem to be

able to figure out how to fix the problem.

This is the thing I don't understand with

my dad. My dad's the same. He has an

iPhone 6, and he's constantly moaning

about it. He's always having problems with

it. Like, he can't do this, he can't do

that. He's always coming to me saying, oh

Daniel, how do I fix this? How do I do

this? Why is it doing this? It's like it

has a mind of its own. And this just

really confuses me because my dad is a

smart guy. He, he can take

apart, um, electronic devices and stuff

like that when they're broken, and he can

repair them and then put them back

together. He understands circuit boards

and electronics and mechanical stuff.

He designs complex machinery for ships

where he has to design it all himself and

make sure it works. He, he does computer

programming so that, so that the machines

he works— he designs works properly.

He, he's a mechanical engineer, but when

it comes to iPhones and tech and social

media and the internet, he's absolutely

useless. I just, I don't understand how

someone can have so much difficulty with

an iPhone. They're like the most simplest,

intuitive, easy to use. The design is so

easy to understand. It,

it's just, it can't— for me, it's so easy

to, to figure out how to use. It wasn't

difficult at all. No one taught me how to

use a smartphone. You just fiddle around

with it and you You find out how to do

things yourself. I didn't have to go

through a manual book or an instruction

book to find out how to do stuff. No, I

found it out by myself.

And he's always moaning about it. It's

like when he first got it, it was like

every week he was finding something new to

moan about it. For example, he would put

it in his pocket and then the charging

port would get filled up with dust, and

then he'll start moaning. Oh, that's not a

very good design, it's getting all filled

up with dust. Well, maybe you should clean

out your pockets, then you wouldn't have

dust in them. And then he would moan

about, you know, there's like a toggle

switch on the left-hand side of an iPhone

where you can mute everything? He kept

accidentally pressing it for some reason.

I don't know how you can accidentally

press it, and that button requires a bit

of force to click. He sellotaped it. He

put a piece of sellotape over it so he

stopped pressing it. I don't understand

how you can press it by accident. Oh, and

he doesn't use any apps. He has zero,

zero apps on his phone. He doesn't— he

doesn't even have an Apple Store account.

I had to make him an App Store account so

I could download the game I was developing

back last year when I was making an iPhone

game. I had to test it out on his phone.

I had to make an account for him. And then

sometimes the iOS updates itself, and when

it updates, you have to re-enter your

Apple ID. He didn't even know his own

Apple ID. I had to make him a new Apple ID

because he forgot the one that his company

gave him. And it's not difficult, you just

register an email address and create a

password, but for him it's like, like so

difficult, and I just don't understand it.

Anyway, back to the woman. It felt really

good when— what's that over there? Yeah,

it felt really good when I helped her and

I saw how happy she was. And it wasn't

just because I helped her it felt good.

It felt good because I helped someone.

I helped someone with a problem they had

using knowledge that I have about

something that I'm interested in. I love

smartphones. I'm really into smartphones.

I have like an obsession with them. I'm— I

think I buy at least 2 or 3 different

smartphones a year just because I get

bored and I want to try out something new.

I love trying out different smartphones

and seeing what they can do and seeing

what's— what the difference is between

different smartphone brands. And it's not

just smartphones. I love tablets and

laptops and computers and all that

computer-related stuff. And it felt really

nice to be able to use knowledge that—

something that I'm interested in to help

someone. And yeah, she was just really

thankful and happy, and I felt really good

about it. And I felt like, wow, helping

people does feel good. Maybe I'm not a

weirdo after all. It made me think maybe I

should go and work in like a phone shop

where where you have to help customers

deal with problems they're having with

their phones and their tech and stuff like

that. I just find it strange how,

um, I had a cousin, she's like 5 years old

and she can use an iPad with no problems.

She has no problems using an iPad, a

5-year-old. But then a grown man who,

who can design mechanical machines and fix

circuit boards and repair electronics.

You can't even figure out how to do basic

things on a smartphone. I find it really

bizarre how, how bad older

people are when it comes to technology. I

don't know why that is. I guess if you're

using the technology from when you're a

young age, then, then you're more used

to it and you find it easier to deal with.

But I wasn't exactly young when

smartphones and all this started coming

out. I was, I was in my 20s when

smartphones started to come out. When I

was 13, or in my— when I was 15, around

14, I was into phones, but we didn't have

smartphones. We had stuff like the Nokia

3310, that brick with all the buttons and

the tiny little screen, but you could play

Snake on it and And it was amazing. I

remember when those first flip phones

started coming out with the cameras. I had

this friend and he was kind of rich and

his dad was always buying him stuff and he

would come in with this really

cool-looking Samsung flip phone. It was

all silver and shiny, it had a little

antenna at the top, it had a camera. It

was like a 1-megapixel camera, but it was

amazing at the time, 2004 or something.

No one had cameras on their phones. Not

most people didn't even have a mobile

phone. Only the well-off kids had

mobile phones. I had a Nokia 3310. I think

at the time it cost maybe £250,

and I loved it. I played Snake on it all

the time. Um, and there's this thing we

did when you press the number pads on the

dial, uh, you know when you have to phone

someone, there's numbers and you press the

number And it makes like a tone for each

number. We used to play songs on it, like

I could play Jingle Bells using the

dial-up— the number buttons. I don't know

how to speak properly. You know, these

numbers, when you press it, it makes like

a sound. I've had a lot of problems with

my own phone when it comes to making

videos. For example, if you made a really

long video, for example, 10 to 15 minutes,

After about 5 minutes, all the audio gets

out of sync, and I couldn't figure out why

that was happening. So what I do now is I

only make 4-minute videos. After 4

minutes, I stop the video, and then I

start a new one, and then I put all the

videos into my video editor, and I just

stitch it all together, and it solved the

problem perfectly. But it was really

frustrating at first because my Samsung

didn't do this. I didn't have this problem

with my Samsung. I don't know if it's like

a problem with the LG camera software.

Also, there was the microphone issue. Let

me show you. I don't know if you can see,

that's the plug-in microphone, the Rode

one. And I was having so much— so many

problems with that microphone that I

stopped using it for a while. But I

figured out how to stop having— because

before it was like clicking, it was making

these weird clicking noises when I used

it. And that was because it was loose. I

hadn't plugged it in tightly. There's like

a little clip on the back that you can

squeeze to make sure that it's tightly

plugged into the phone, and it wasn't

tightly plugged into the phone. So every

time I walked, it would like jiggle a bit

inside the audio jack port, and it would

make that clicking noise. Well, I just

tightened it up and it stopped making the

clicking noise. And you have to turn Wi-Fi

off as well, because if you have Wi-Fi on,

it interferes with the audio signal for

some reason. It's really strange why that—

why that happens. I don't really know why.

It's like when you have your phone near a

computer and then you're getting signal

interference, and then you start hearing

that weird sound coming out from the

computer speakers. It happens at work by

the tills because the tills are computers.

And sometimes when you stand near the

computer till and your phone is like

receiving a transmission or sending off a

transmission, it starts making that weird

like audio scrambling noise from the till,

and it's really irritating.

Oh,

and in the morning after I finished my

shift and the new people came in to start

the next shift, they were wearing really

weird clothes. They were wearing this,

um, red and green outfit with these hats,

but Christmas hats, and they had these

shoes that had jingly bells. Every time

they walked, there's like a jingling, and

they look like— I think it's like an elf

costume. And I said, is that the new

daytime uniform? And she said, yeah. And

then she said, yours is on the way. I

don't know if she was joking or if she was

serious. Please, please be joking because

they look ridiculous. They look funny,

but please don't make me wear that. No, I

don't want to wear an elf costume. It's so

embarrassing. So I don't understand why

they make those really embarrassing

costumes, um, uniforms, and make the staff

wear them. They should at least give us a

choice. It's so humiliating. As if the job

isn't boring and depressing

enough, they make us look stupid while

doing it. Great, thanks a lot. Oh, and

there was this show on last night on TV

about JD Sports. I don't know if you know

what JD Sports is. It's like this big

company that sells sports clothing and

sport gear. And it was about the workers

in their warehouse and what it's like

working in a warehouse for JD Sports, and

it was horrible. It was like working in a

prison. They all, they all get like

searched every time they go in and out of

the warehouse for things like lighters and

matches, which I can understand, but it

was like they were lining up, all being

body searched, and it was like they were

entering a prison. And the workers were

saying it's so disrespectful, it's so

depressing going to work, and there's a

3-strike rule where You get 3 strikes and

you just get fired. And you get a strike

for doing things like looking at your

phone, sitting down, um,

there's loads of things, like not wearing

proper uniform. And then there was this

guy, he said he's fired people before just

for sitting down for like 10 seconds. And

it, it was so depressing. And the job

looks really difficult, like you're

constantly— it's like 10-hour shift or

something, and you're just moving boxes up

and down. And people had cuts and bruises

and scratches And you're not even allowed

to take a rest. You can't sit down.

You're not really allowed to go to the

toilet. And it was horrible.

I can't believe that in a country

like the United Kingdom, where it's

supposed to be like a modern civilized

country, we have these warehouses and

giant corporations that treat their staff

like, like slaves. It's like slave labor.

And then most of the workers there are

come from the job center, so they don't

have a choice. They have to take these

jobs, otherwise the job center will say,

well, if you don't take the job, you're

going to get sanctioned. And a lot of the

workers come from employment agencies

where they don't even give them proper

work contracts. It's called zero-hour

contracts, where the amount of hours you,

you get to work a week isn't, isn't set,

isn't determined. It can change every

week. Like, sometimes you might do 20

hours, some weeks you might do 30. And

it's not like a, um, it's not stable.

It's not reliable because you don't know

how many hours you're going to do one week

and you keep getting different shifts.

And it just made me feel like, wow, I've

got it so good with my current job. I have

a 40-hour contract, which means they're

obliged to, to let me work for 5 days a

week for 40 hours a week. And I get

holiday pay. I get sick pay. I can sit

down without, without being warned that

I'm gonna get fired. But I did get warned

a few times that I was sitting down too

much, but that's because there's nothing

else to do. Sometimes you finish all the

jobs that need to be done and there's

nothing to do. You could just wander up

and down and make it look like you're

busy, but I think I sit down roughly an

hour and a half in total, all the time

I get to sit down during work, just

because And sometimes the other guy's on

his break and you have to stay behind the

till. What are you gonna do? You just sit

down by the till. And overall, the

atmosphere at my workplace is really nice.

It's really relaxed, apart from when the

Nepal guy's there. I bet if the Nepal guy

was running the place, it would be like a

freaking slave warehouse factory.

I worked in a warehouse before. I did a

12-hour shift and it was It was really

physically demanding. I was exhausted by

the end of the day. My whole body was

aching. I couldn't like move properly for

the whole week because I was so sore. All

my muscles were aching so badly, and it

was such boring work. It was just— you

lift boxes of crap, you move it from one

pallet to a different pallet, and you just

do that all day for 12 hours straight.

You don't get to sit down. There's— you

get a lunch break, but that's it. And then

it's back to lifting boxes from one area

to another area, and it feels so

depressing. And all I have to do at my

work is I stand behind a till, press some

buttons, and deal with some customers,

and then do some cooking, and sweep the

floor, and then rearrange the

stock in the shop. It's so easy compared

to what these people at the warehouse—
