What happened to Jacksgap (Jack Harries)

Hello and welcome back to my new series

where I'm going to investigate what

happened to these super famous mega

YouTube stars that used to be very popular

about 10 years ago. Does anyone remember

the early 2010s when the whole vlogging

YouTube community was pretty much

dominated by a bunch of British twats?

The whole UK YouTube scene was dominated

by about 6 or 7 people. People such as

Alfie Deyes, Zoella, Dan and Phil, Jim

Chapman, Marcus Butler, and they used to

call themselves the YouTube boy band. I

know it sounds really stupid. And there

was also another YouTuber, this guy called

Jack Harries or JacksGap, and he used to

be insanely popular. About 8 years ago,

he started making videos on his channel

called JacksGap because it was his gap

year before he started university and he

wanted to start a YouTube channel as a

hobby and I think he gained about a

million subscribers in under a year. I was

checking out his first videos for

research, and they're just so incredibly

cringy. He used to do really, really weird

stuff on camera, and I guess everyone

loved him because he's, you know, he's

pretty attractive as a guy, and I'm pretty

sure the majority of his audience were

mostly female. I can't imagine being a guy

and watching this guy unless you're gay or

something. He also has an identical twin

called Finn, and they used to do videos

together called Jack and Finn, and they

became really popular really quickly.

They started to get millions and millions

of views on their videos. The beginning

videos in the beginning were mostly silly

things like skits and just simple vlogs

talking about their lives and talking

about their feelings and what they're

interested in. And then they started

making videos with all the other super

famous UK YouTubers like DanIsNotOnFire,

ThatOtherGayGuy, and That guy from South

Africa. For me personally, I don't really

think the videos were anything special.

It was just simple vlogs. But at the time,

most of the really famous YouTubers just

did simple vlogs like that. And the reason

why they all got popular was mainly

because they're very good-looking. I think

it's kind of interesting to compare all

the popular YouTubers back in 2010 to the

popular young British YouTubers of 2020.

Pretty much all of the really famous

British YouTubers from 2010, around that

time period used to make vlogs and just

did daily vlogging and kind of like skits.

But nowadays in 2020, who are the famous

young British YouTubers? I don't really

know, but I guess maybe ImAllexx or Kavos

or Morgz. I just think it's kind of

interesting that in 2010 everyone was

famous for doing vlogging, and now in 2020

people are famous for doing commentary and

just complaining about other famous people

all the time or doing absolutely

ridiculous clickbait kind of content like

Morgz does. I think I actually prefer 2010

when everyone was just making wholesome

vlogs instead of all this commentary

rubbish. Now don't get me wrong, I don't

mind commentary, but I think it's kind of

like an easy, lazy way of getting views.

The video doesn't even have to be any

good, you just put some really famous

guy's name in the title and you're pretty

much guaranteed to get a lot of views.

And yes, that is the main reason why I'm

making this video today. Anyway, over the

years they gained in popularity, Jack and

Finn, millions and millions of views. And

for some reason, after about 5 or 6 years,

they started to change. I guess they grew

out of the whole, hey, let's make silly

skits and show everyone how original and

creative we are, and they started making

videos talking about more serious topics

like mental health and protecting the

world and the environment. They also did a

lot of travel vlogs and they started going

to different countries, which was

sponsored by Sony and Skype apparently.

They didn't even use their own money,

which they easily could have because it,

it does seem as though they come from a

rich background. If you look up his

parents on Wikipedia, their father Andrew

Harries is— uh, hold on, let me get my

Wikipedia article. Yes, Andrew Harries is

chief executive and the co-founder of Left

Bank Pictures, UK-based production company

formed in 2007, and he's produced

television dramas including The Royal

Family, Cold Feet, Prime Suspect,

Cracker, and the BAFTA-winning television

play The Deal. Never heard of any of those

programs, but I'm guessing he's a pretty

successful man and could have easily

funded his son's trips to these countries

that they went to. But anyway, they

managed to get £20,000 out of Skype and

Sony. Not really sure why Skype or Sony

would want to sponsor 2 British guys going

on holiday. What does Skype and Sony get

out of the deal? How do they benefit? I

guess they got their products advertised.

So around 2018, um, they kind

of stopped making videos. Well, they made

like one video a year talking about the

environment because they gave up the whole

JacksGap brand thing and he just changed

it all to Jack Harries. And now he's

pretty much a full-blown environmental

activist. All he does is talk about

saving the planet, and I think he was on

the news actually about a year ago because

he got arrested because he was being a

nuisance doing some kind of protest.

Yeah, I think he glued himself to a tree

as some kind of protest about the

environment, and then the police had to

unglue him and then arrest him. So he's

pretty much just wasting the police's time

by not actually doing anything that

matters. As of now, they don't really make

YouTube videos like they used to. It's

mainly just— the recent uploads are mainly

just clips of their interviews when they

went on the news to complain about the

environment and to do environmental

activist stuff. I find it kind of crazy

how he just voluntarily abandoned his

really successful YouTube channel with how

many subscribers? He has millions and

millions, I guess. And he had a really,

really supportive and active fan base that

probably would have watched him, carried

on watching him even now. I don't know why

he didn't just carry on making videos

about the environment. If he wants to

spread the message of trying to save the

environment, wouldn't it make more sense

to use your really big YouTube channel

that has millions of followers on to

spread your message? I don't understand

why he just stopped uploading videos.

Well, I guess he has uploaded a couple

videos about the environment, trying to

spread his message, but he doesn't get as

many views as he used to when he was

trying to be this cute, relatable young

guy. I guess his masses of female fans

don't really care that much about

environmentalist talk. Wow, The Rise of

Electric Racing, uploaded 10 months ago,

only has 31,000 views. That is insane.

Even I get more views than that now.

31,000 views on a video from a guy who

is regularly putting in 5 million views

per video in his heyday. So yeah,

that's all I had to say about JacksGap. I

don't really know much else. I guess you

could Google it and find out more

information if you really cared that much.

In conclusion, to make a brief summary,

um, awkward teenager makes cringy vlogs.

Becomes really famous, mainly because he's

just good-looking, not because his vlogs

are actually good. And then he grows up

and becomes an environmental activist

trying to save the bloody planet. Good

luck, Jack. Now he probably spends a lot

of time getting arrested for gluing

himself to trees and sitting around in

jail cells trying to save the bloody

planet. If it was me, I would have just

stuck to YouTube and become really,

really rich and made a load of money. I

mean, the planet's gonna blow up anyway in

5 billion years. What's the point of

trying to save it now? As if the planet

needs us to save it. We need to be saved

from the planet. It could erupt with

volcanoes anytime, and then I think we're

gonna be the ones who need saving.
