What is the Surface Duo

I just finished watching a video about

this new Surface— new tablet Microsoft are

making called the Surface Duo. So I

thought I would make a video basically

just parroting everything I just heard,

plus I'll give my opinions so I can

collect my $1 from AdSense and put it into

my pocket for safekeeping. So what is the

Microsoft Surface Duo?

Basically, it's kind of like a normal

Surface, but it folds in half. Ooh.

I really don't understand this recent

gimmick where phone companies and tech

companies are making foldable devices.

First, it was Samsung with their folding

phone. It's like they think it's going to

be some kind of massive trend in, in a few

years in the future, but I just don't

really see it happening. The whole

foldable idea It's pretty cool, but that

stupid crease or that gap in the middle of

the screen looks so bad. I don't

understand why you'd ever want to use a

foldable device. So the whole idea for

this Surface Duo seems to be that it's a

tablet, but it folds in half, and then you

can have 2 apps on either screen, and

they're kind of like separate screens.

What is— what is the point of it? I don't

understand. Why don't you just buy 2

smaller tablets and then put them side by

side? Sellotape them together from the

back, and they've basically got the same

thing. I mean, my iPad Pro already does

that. You can have two apps open at the

same time side by side, and it works

perfectly fine. It's great. Or I can just

have one app open and use it full screen,

and there isn't this massive gap down the

center of the screen. But if you want to

use apps in full screen mode on the

Surface Duo, you get this massive. Gap in

the middle of the screen. I don't really

fancy the idea of watching YouTube videos

or Netflix videos in full-screen mode,

and then there's this massive gap down the

center. That's just the dumbest thing

ever. So Microsoft's solution to this

problem is they want you to turn the

device around so you get this

tiny little screen to watch videos in

full-screen mode. I don't understand how

that's better than what my iPad already

does. If they're trying to get people to

buy this thing, they're supposed to make

it better than what already exists. And

this is just worse in every way. It makes

the screen half the size of how big I

could be watching YouTube on full screen

on my iPad. The only benefit of being able

to fold the entire screen in half is to

make it smaller and to make it more

portable. But I've never really had any

problems with being able to carry my iPad

around. It's already pretty portable. I

just slot it into my bag and I can take it

anywhere I want to. I guess it's kind of

cool if you're going to use 2 apps or 2

programs side by side at the same time,

and then you can hold it like a book and

it looks all futuristic. I like how you

could be able to play games using the top

screen and then the bottom half of the

screen would be the controllers, kind of

like a Nintendo 3DS or 2DS or whatever

it's called. But then you'd be using

touchscreen controls, which kind of suck,

you know. Why don't you just get a Switch

or Nintendo 2DS? Apparently there's

going to be 2 different versions of the

device: the Surface version, which is

going to be running Microsoft Windows,

and then there's going to be this smaller

version, which is going to be like a

smartphone, and that's running Android,

not Windows. I actually bought a Windows

Phone before, ages ago. And it was

terrible. It was really bad. It was that

Microsoft Windows Phone that had a

41-megapixel camera on it, and I thought

that would be fantastic because I was

really into photography. It was so

difficult to use because there were hardly

any apps on it. There were just— I

couldn't find any apps that I wanted to

use on it. There was just Facebook and

Skype, and then the rest of it was just a

lot of rubbish, kind of like bloatware,

third-party apps that looked like scams.

But I have to say, the idea of this being

a tiny little phone that folds out into

kind of like a small tablet, I guess,

that does look quite interesting. But I

have a few, a few worries. Um, how do you

use it one-handedly? For example, if I was

making a video or I was vlogging, usually

I hold the phone with one hand.

How would you do that with this device?

You'd have the other, the other half of

the screen hanging down or dangling down.

It just seems kind of cumbersome. I don't

know, I don't really feel like I've been

sold on this product. It looks cool, it

looks interesting, but do you really need

2 screens side by side? I use my phone

every single day and I've never really

thought to myself, wow, I wish I had 2

screens instead of one. I wish my screen

was double the size. I think my current

phone right now, the Samsung S10+, is

perfect in every way. The The only thing I

would change about it if I could would be—

well, it'd be nice if they had a

wide-angle lens on the selfie front-facing

side, then I could do wide-angle vlogs

without using my clip-on fisheye lens. I

think the reason why we're seeing all

these foldable devices coming out is

because phones have kind of reached a dead

end in terms of design, and they just look

the same now, just rectangles. And I don't

think there's anything wrong with that,

because all the phones look the same now

because that's the ideal shape and size

that most people want to use. And I don't

know if this foldable idea is actually

going to catch on. If my Samsung S10+

broke, would I go out and buy one of these

foldable phones if it costs the same as a

regular new phone? I don't know, because I

use my phone to make a lot of videos, and

I don't know if this foldable design would

be good for vlogging or making videos.

I don't really think this is going to

catch on. I think some people will buy it

if they've got enough money to splash

about, but I think the majority of people

will just stick to single-screen devices.

I think this whole foldable device,

foldable phone gimmick is kind of niche,

and I won't be investing. And for that

reason, I'm out.
