Why I'm Learning to Drive at age 33 [lR8uKmKyT6I]

So today I would like to talk about why

I'm learning to drive at age 33. Why did I

decide after all these years to change my

mind on driving and start taking lessons

again? And I'm going to guess that most

people are not really interested in this

topic because for most adults, driving is

pretty normal. Most adults can drive and

most people have a car. But for me

personally, driving has always been this

really scary and terrifying thing that

I've managed to put off up until now. And

it's like one of those things that I see

everyone else doing But for some reason I

can't do it, and it's really frustrating

me. It's one of the only adult activities

that I feel like I just can't do for some

reason, and I really want to fix that. In

life, I've done pretty much— well, almost

everything that an adult can do, such as

having relationships, having girlfriends,

having you-know-what in the bedroom,

getting married, getting jobs, getting

apartments. The only other things I

haven't really managed to do in life as an

adult would be Driving, buying a home,

and having children. And those last 2

things, having children and buying a home,

they're not really possible, I guess,

because I don't really have enough money

to be able to buy a home, and there's no

women lining up to have my children. So I

thought to myself, learning to drive is

not really expensive, and buying a car is

not very expensive either, so I should

learn to drive. And after buying the

electric bicycle and having some fun on

the roads, I started to feel confident

about just being on the road in general

and following the traffic laws and

following the traffic lights and

pretending like I'm a road user. Well, I

am because I'm a cyclist. And after biking

up and down here and there to meet

different women to go on dates with, I

started to build confidence on the road.

And I started to think to myself,

actually, being on the road is not that

scary. How much different would it be

being in a car? I've always had really

negative thoughts when it comes to

driving. I always remember as a kid seeing

my dad struggling on the weekends trying

to fix his car because my dad would always

buy a cheap secondhand used car and it

would always break down and have some kind

kind of problems. And I would see him in

the garage all day long underneath the car

trying to fix it. And it just seemed messy

and complicated. And it looked like

something I would never want to do. And

I'm not saying I'm gonna become a car

mechanic because I would just pay to get

it fixed instead of trying to fix it

myself. But it's just, I always associated

owning and maintaining a car with a lot of

stress, a lot of hassle and headaches.

And whenever people ask me, why don't I

learn to drive? Why don't I get my

license? I would just come up with all

these excuses to justify not driving.

Like, I work from home. I don't have any

friends to go and see. I don't actually

need to go anywhere, so I don't need a

car. And if I need to go anywhere, I just

use public transport. And if there's no

public transport, then it means that place

is not really very good. And all of those

were just excuses. The main reason why I

refused to learn to drive was mainly

because I was scared. I was scared at the

idea of being inside of a box on wheels

that's full of flammable liquid on a road.

And I was also scared of the idea of being

on the road and getting in the way of

other people and just being a disturbance

because I wasn't very good at driving. I

took some driving lessons back when I was

18 or 17, and I did quite a lot of

lessons, and I just remember really hating

driving and feeling really terrified of

being on the road. Pulling out onto roads

in front of oncoming traffic, even if they

were very far away, really scared me, and

I was just a very nervous person when it

came to traffic and being on the road.

But now it's been about 15 or 14 years

since then, I feel like I've grown a lot

as a person and I've gained more

confidence when it comes to just being on

the road. So I've had about 5 or 6 driving

lessons now and I can fairly easily drive

to Maidstone, which is about 10 miles

away. I can drive to Maidstone without

having too many problems and I feel quite

good about it. And I might even be able to

say that I'm enjoying driving, which is

something I never thought I would say,

but it is actually kind of fun when you're

not scared of it anymore. You can actually

enjoy the feeling of just traveling along

at 60 miles per hour and going around

corners and bends and trying to solve

problems. It feels like most of driving is

mainly problem solving, trying to avoid

hazards and trying to navigate around

stuff. To be honest, I'm not entirely sure

why I'm learning to drive because I don't

really need to. I work from home. I don't

really have to be anywhere or go anywhere

very desperately. I don't really feel like

I would save money by being able to drive

because trains are going to be cheaper and

it's going to be cheaper to just cycle to

Maidstone if I need to meet someone. So On

the financial aspect of it, it's just

going to be more expensive to have and own

a car. The only benefits would be its

convenience because I could just go

anywhere I want to whenever I want to

without having to rely or depend on public

transport. And I'd also avoid those scary

kids at the train station. I don't have to

be at risk of being attacked by some

random strangers who might be crazy. And

number 3, I think girls might respect me

more and find me more attractive as a male

if I had my own automobile and I was able

to drive and pick them up and take them

out to places. Okay, so now I want to show

you something I bought recently. In order

to practice driving, obviously I'm taking

lessons, but I can only do about 2 lessons

or 3 lessons a week, which isn't really

enough. I would like to do more so I could

learn this faster, but it's kind of hard

to get more lessons because there's so

many people wanting to learn to drive. So

I have to resort to using this. I decided

to buy this steering wheel and this gear

stick and also has pedals at the bottom.

And I got this game where you can drive

trucks. It's called European Truck

Simulator. Unfortunately, I couldn't find

a game that has realistic car driving.

And you can look around inside of the

cabin like that, you can look out the

window. And basically my

plan is I'm going to use this to try and

practice driving because it has like a— it

has a clutch mechanism and you've got to

hold down the clutch and change the gear,

and then it starts rumbling. I'm not

really sure if driving a truck is

different to a car, Because when I lift

the clutch up and press the gas, nothing

happens really. It just kind of stalls

the engine. I'm not sure if I have the

controls set up in the wrong way, or maybe

just driving a truck is different in

general. The cable management is not very

good at the moment. I have to sort that

out in a minute. There's just so many

cables, I don't know where to put them.

Shove them in the corner like that,

maybe. But anyway, that's my plan. I

decided to buy these things to practice

driving. The steering wheel is quite

realistic. It's got these lever things at

the back. You can do the indicators and

it has steering, goes around like that.

But the unnatural thing about the steering

is, well, in a car, if you kept steering

it and then let go, it would, it would

automatically spin back around, wouldn't

it? Well, I think it would. This one

doesn't do that, but it feels stiff. Or

maybe it does, just I'm not doing it

right. I still don't know how to change

the gear or actually make the truck go

forwards. Look, it starts moving on its

own. It's kind of weird. I don't know why

it does that. See, I can't, I can't get

the truck to move forwards even though

it should be in first. I'm lifting the

clutch up, but it just— oh,

it's moving! I'm moving! Oh, we're going

to Southampton.

Southampton.

I'm moving at 11 kilometers. I just hit

the sign and the curb. I think there's

a mod you can get so you can drive cars as

well. I was thinking of getting GTA, but

then it's not really a realistic driving

simulator and all the traffic's on the

other side of the road. There's a lot of

racing games, but the problem with racing

games is there's no traffic and I don't

want to race, I want to practice driving.

So I can look out the window, look into

the mirrors, do my mirror checks, even got

a horn. I don't know if you can hear that.

So if I can try to change second gear,

maybe I can go faster.

No,

it's still going at first gear even though

it says I'm in second. Oh, now I'm in

neutral. Oh look, it's a roundabout.

Oh, that was not even steering at all.

What? Oh, it is steering. It's just

steering very slowly.

Well, now I'm in 3rd gear. Oh, it's going

faster now, nearly 20 km/h.

I need to fix this steering wheel down as

well. I'm not very good at the

Yeah, I need to learn how to drive a

truck, I guess. So hopefully my practice

driving setup will help me. It was a bit

expensive, £260, which is the equivalent

of 4 lessons. 4 hours of lessons.

So it's only 4 hours of lessons. If it

does actually help me, it might save me

money if I have to take less lessons

because it helps me get better at driving.

Well, we'll find out later, I guess.
