LG G5 for vlogging first impressions and video tests

Oh,

there's 2 cameras and the buttons on

the back for some reason.

LG. Look at

the wide angle. And the stabilization

is so nice.

So happy with the new phone. It does

everything that I wanted it to do. This

isn't the new phone. This is my old phone,

the Samsung S6. I'm just going to make a

quick video on the S6, and then I'm going

to switch— oh, there's a rabbit over

there. Then I'm going to switch to the new

phone, and we're going to see if there's

much difference between between the

cameras, if any. So there's

just so much to say about the new phone.

Where do I start? Well, for starters,

when you're recording a video on the

Samsung S6, there's a pause button. So you

can do this— watch, I'm going to pause it

now, and then I resume. It's like a jump

cut, but you don't have to edit the jump

cut into the video by splicing. You can

just pause the video and then resume. And

it's such a nice feature because sometimes

you're talking and— wait,

will it sneeze? Ah, I hate that feeling

when you're about to sneeze and it doesn't

come. Because sometimes you're making a

video and then you kind of have to stop

making a video, or you can't remember what

you're going to say, so you just want to

press the pause button instead of stopping

the video, then having to start a new

video. And it's just so handy being able

to pause the video and then restart it.

And luckily, the LG camera also lets

you do that. There's a lovely pause

button. That's the thing I hate about

iPhones. You can't do that on an iPhone.

There's no pause button. You have to stop

the video and then start a new video, and

it's just— it's so irritating. It's not

really a huge deal, but it just takes out

an— it takes out a step in the whole

video-making process, and it's just— it's

great. What else is it? There's 2 cameras

on the back of it. Wait, I've got it in my

pocket. Look, there's 2. There's a normal—

I don't know which is which, but there's a

normal camera, like the standard

smartphone camera you get, 16 megapixels.

But then there's this second camera which

is super wide angle. It's so wide. I'm

going to show it to you later, but it's

just so nice to look at. It's only 8

megapixels, but You don't really notice

much of a difference. Remember, like,

last— earlier this year, I got this

clip-on wide-angle lens because I wanted

to do wide-angle. I really liked the

effect, but it was just so irritating

having to clip on that big old lens to my

camera all the time. I ended up just

chucking it. I gave it to my friend,

actually. I don't even— I didn't want to

use it anymore because it was such a

hassle. But this camera, you don't need a

clip-on wide-angle lens. You got one built

in right here. And the home button is

on the back, which is a bit strange, but

it's quite comfortable. You can press it

easily with your finger. And you can

actually remove this bottom bit and take

out the battery, put in a new battery.

They also have like these different things

you can plug in, like a camera grip or an

audio booster or something. I don't really

understand. I don't really care.

And the worrying thing was that the

microphone— the headphone port is at the

top and the camera is also at the top

right here. So it's like right next to

each other. And I use a Rode shotgun mic,

like a small one, and it's about this long

that you plug into your phone to improve

audio. I don't know if you can see it on

the reflection. See, there's like a wind

muff. And I was a bit worried that when

you plug in the microphone, it might be

visible on the camera, but luckily it

wasn't visible. I haven't tried it with

the wind muff on. The wind muff might be

slightly visible, which is a bit worrying.

It's not a huge deal-breaker.

Um, what else? It's really fast.

I can't really show you how fast it is.

It just feels really snappy. It's probably

because I've just got it and I haven't

really installed many things on it. My

Samsung S6 is getting really slow and

sluggish. It wasn't like that when I first

got it. It must be because I have so many

apps on it, and I guess if I just did

a hardware reset, it would fix those

problems. But so far it feels really fast.

And the keyboard, I don't know why, but I

can type really quickly on, on the LG

keyboard. There's just something about it

that feels good, and it's hard to tell.

The thing that it doesn't have is, um,

multi-split-screen apps. The Samsung S6,

you can have 2 apps open at the same time.

You can even have a pop-up app, which is

really handy sometimes. LG doesn't really

have any of that. You can just have one

app open at the same time, as far as I can

Apart from that, it's pretty much your

bog-standard Android phone.

It's pretty simple. See, this is LG's

launcher, LG skin. It's quite

nice, it's very simple. It's not like

Samsung where they put loads and loads of

apps that you're never going to use and

it's all cluttered. It's very simplified

and I really like it. It doesn't have any

buttons on the bottom of the screen, it

just has these buttons at the bottom and

you can customize the order and there's a

a few extra buttons that you can add.

It's okay, it's quite nice not having to

push down on a physical button. And you

can also add a microSD card, which is

really handy because some of my videos get

quite long, and those long videos, they

take up a lot of storage space. And

sometimes I find myself running out of

room easily on my phone, and it's so nice

to be able to just slot in a an SD card,

a microSD card. You can't do that on the

Samsung S6. Samsung stupidly removed a lot

of features that were great on its

previous phones, like removable battery,

SD card slot. They got rid of those on the

S6, but LG, they kept them. Got removable

battery, got SD card slot. So LG did a

really good job, I think, on this.

Anyway, enough talking on this phone. I'm

going to switch over. We're going to see

if there's much difference So this is what

the video looks like on the LG G5. It

doesn't look that much different to the

Samsung, doesn't it? I was kind of

expecting that. It's pretty much the same

camera. It's only 3 megapixels more,

but you aren't really going to notice

that. And this thing, I can't use this

because look, when I put it near the

microphone it covers up the camera like

this because the headphone port

and the camera are both at the top of the

screen, and this kind of enters into the

camera's field of view. It's kind of

disappointing because I really wanted to

use this when it was windy. See, it does

such a good job at blocking out the wind.

It's kind of disappointing. Microphone

out, the plug-in one, this one. I just

want to see what this, um, what the

camera's onboard microphone sounds like.

I was having a few problems with this on

this— on the LG G5. I turned on airplane

mode, but I turned Wi-Fi back on, and it

was making like crackling noises, which

happens when it gets like interference.

That's why you have to have your phone on

airplane mode if you want to use this.

But it was still making crackling noises

even with airplane mode on. But if I turn

Wi-Fi off as well, then the crackling

noises seem to disappear, but it's a bit

unreliable. Is that a

hair? Maybe I don't really need this.

Maybe there's not really much difference.

I think the LG G5's microphone sounds

better than the S6. The S6 was a bit

quiet, so that's, that's one of the

reasons why I bought this in the first

place. Um, don't really

know what else to talk about. It's a bit

cold. I'm not really noticing much of a

difference between the Samsung

phone and this phone video quality-wise.

Looks pretty much the same, doesn't it?

But I guess this is what you can expect

from current smartphone technology. I just

can't wait for the day when they're going

to be able to put bigger sensors into the

front camera of smartphones and then you

can blur out the background. How great

would that be? Then you wouldn't need a

DSLR. How long is it going to be until

they start putting bigger camera sensors

into phones? I wish they would focus on

that more because that's all they need to

do with smartphones to, to make them

better. They're already really fast,

they're already really powerful. It's just

the camera that seems to be lagging

behind. They have really nice cameras on

the back of the phone with stabilization.

There's no stabilization for the

front-facing camera, as you can see. I'm

walking around, it's probably a bit shaky

and stuttery. It's not like— it's not

fluid or smooth. I think that the

Samsung S6 front-facing camera has

stabilization. There is a stabilization

setting on the Samsung for the

front-facing camera, but there isn't one

for the LG. My arm's starting to

hurt.

It's a really nice-looking phone as well.

It's made out of metal but really doesn't

feel that much like metal. Feels a bit

like plastic. It doesn't have that cold

feel to it that metal has,

but it's nice and light. I don't

really care if it's made out of metal, to

be honest.

Okay, so this is the camera on the other

side of the phone. This is just a regular

16-megapixel camera. Look at the

stabilization, it's like gliding, isn't

it? It's really smooth, there's no

shakiness,

but it's very zoomed in, isn't it? Oh

look, you can actually get some background

blur if If it's close enough to the lens.

See how close we can focus.

It's about— we can focus about this close.

It's pretty close,

and it does seem to do a good job at

focusing. It's a lot faster at focusing

than my Sony camera. Okay, now this is,

this is where it gets interesting. Watch

this, watch, watch. I'm going to press the

second lens on the camera. Look at that,

look how wide that is. That's amazing.

Look, it's so wide.

Look at that. It's just so— it's weird,

isn't it? It's like you've got a fisheye

lens built into the phone,

and the stabilization is really good.

It's just a shame they didn't put

stabilization onto the front-facing camera

as well because that's kind of shaky.

Well, watch, this is the difference. This

is the normal camera, it's not wide

angle at all. You can zoom, digital zoom

looks pretty rubbish, and then you zoom

all the way out and it switches, it

switches to the wide angle and you just

get such a huge wide angle.

Look at that, isn't that nice?

It's not really much to show you right

now, the sky is just all cloudy.

I don't know what I would look like if I

turn the camera around. It'd probably be

really weird if I vlogged like this. I

would have stabilization and I'd have

really wide angle. I don't know if it

makes my nose look really big. The wider

angle lens you have, the bigger your nose

gets. It's strange, isn't it? But the

problem is I can't see what I'm filming.

Really impressed. I'm not that impressed

with the front-facing camera. So that's

the LG G5 camera.

There's a lot of other modes. That I'm

gonna show you in a bit after I've decided

what I'm gonna do. If there's anything you

wanna know about the phone, you can just

ask me. I probably won't really go into

anything else apart from the camera. The

camera is the main thing that interests me

when it comes to phones. Apart from the

camera, all phones are pretty much the

same now. It's just the cameras that set

them apart. I'm not sure if I like

this front-facing camera though. It's

just— I'm not sure, I'm gonna

have to see what it looks like when I go

to edit, but I would be a bit disappointed

if I prefer the look of the Samsung

because that would just mean that I've

completely wasted my money on this. But I

really like the wide-angle lens on the

back, it's so nice. I don't know how much

I'm going to use it.

I look really white. I look really pale.

I don't look that pale, do I?

My lips aren't usually this red.

I don't know what they've done, LG. It's

like they've lowered the saturation, but

they've raised the vividness.

If I hold my arm as far as I can, this is

how wide it gets.

I'm quite pleased with it actually.

I don't know why I bought the, the Sony

mirrorless camera. Oh, it's a feather.

I'm actually thinking of returning it back

to Amazon because it's just so much

nicer to make videos on the phone. It's so

more— so much more convenient, so much

more easier. It's more fun. I don't

like using my mirrorless camera for

videos. It just feels like You're

pressured into making the video look good

because you've spent the extra money to

get a better-looking lens and camera, and

then you just get pressured. And my arm's

starting to ache. I don't like the way the

camera's down here at the bottom. On the

Samsung, it's up here at the top because I

end up shooting from below. I prefer it to

be more level. Then you have to hold the

camera up higher, and then my arm starts

to ache. Maybe I should have— maybe I

should have gotten the HTC 10. I heard

that the HTC 10 has image stabilization on

the front-facing camera. I didn't do my

research properly, did I? I didn't really—

I didn't even consider the HTC until after

I had ordered the LG. LG G5.

Let's have a look at some apples.

You can't really focus very close on the

front-facing camera. See what happens if I

touch the screen. Nothing,

nothing, nothing happens. You can't focus,

you can't refocus.

The focus is very fast.

I like the way it blurs out the

on the background. See how quick that is?

Look, background, apple. It's like

instant. Background,

apple. It is so quick.

I guess I can't focus this close, or can

No, zoom— digital zoom just looks

terrible. And then we're gonna go back out

wide, super wide angle. Ooh,

just look how wide it gets. I really like

the way it looks. It's not as detailed

because it's lower resolution, but you

just get so much into the shot. Where's

blur with the wide-angle lens. See,

everything's in focus. The apple's in

focus, the background's in focus. And

touching the screen doesn't refocus it.

Nothing happens when you touch the screen.

There's a magnifying glass down here. I

wonder what this does. Oh, it's the zoom.

Yeah, so the wide-angle lens, you can't do

any background blur. Look, even with my

hand, everything's in focus.

So, but if we go back to the normal lens,

the normal lens, you can do background

blur if the, if the object is close enough

to the camera. Let's see what else we can

do.

Yeah, you have to be like pretty close,

like this far away. If you get any

further, then even the background's going

to be in focus. See? Everything's in focus

now. It's not a DSLR, you can't really

expect it to do that much. See, it's still

fairly out of focus, the background,

but it's a small sensor. So I

like doing this, going wide angle and then

making a video.

You can see my hand as well. It's just so

wide. What happens if I hold it here? I

think my whole hand's going to be in the

It would have been interesting if they put

the ultra-wide lens on the front as well,

so there's 4 cameras, 2 on the back and 2

Hmm. Okay, this is strange.

There are all these different modes. This

one's called Pop Out. I don't really see

the point of this. So it

seems to be using both of the cameras to

take this video in the middle and then

make like a blurred out video around the

edges. What's the point in that?

Looking at the other camera modes, the

video modes, they're not very interesting.

There's this pop-out mode that I showed

you just now, and there was multi-view,

which is like a collage It takes 3 videos

for a few seconds. It's kind of pointless.

And there's time-lapse. That'd be useful,

I guess. There's also slow-mo. Not really

interested in that. There's not really

much else. You get more on the Samsung

camera. On the Samsung, you can do stuff

like— you can have the front-facing camera

and the back camera filming at the same

time. I never used it. There's just no

reason to use that. How— why would you

want to do that? Never. I've never thought

to myself, hmm, I want to record what's in

front of me and what's behind me at the

same time. It's never occurred to me.

I think that's it really for the video

tests. What else can I do?

I guess we can do a walking test and see

how shaky it is. I'm guessing

it's going to be pretty shaky, no

stabilization. We could

do, um, some low-light testing when it

gets darker. I'm a bit disappointed with

the sky. I was hoping for some,

uh, nice clouds and, uh,

like a sunset, but it's just completely

overcast, so it's a bit boring. It's just

completely white, just whiteness,

complete whiteness.
