I Can’t Put This Down - ROG Ally 3 Months Later

Hello and welcome back to a new video. So

it's been a few months since the ROG Ally

came out, and we have to ask the question,

has it been able to stand the test of

time? I've been using it every day as my

main desktop computer, and today we're

going to answer the question, has it been

worth it? Why did I ditch my very

expensive gaming laptop just so I could

switch to the much cheaper and much

smaller ROG Ally as my main computer? So

as you can see, I've put my gaming laptop

away. It is an RTX 3060 i7 10th

generation Razer Blade 17-inch laptop,

and I away ever since I got the ROG Ally,

and I haven't really felt the need to take

it back out. The ROG Ally does everything

I need from my computing needs and my

gaming needs, and it's a pretty good

device. And as you can see, I have pimped

out my ROG Ally with many accessories.

We've got this wireless keyboard, we've

got this wireless mouse, and my brand new

monitor. The newest addition to my ROG

desktop setup has to be the 27-inch

curved monitor that I bought for only

about £100. Okay, it's not the best

quality monitor, and the image quality is

not amazing, but it was pretty cheap and

things still look pretty good on this

monitor. And you really need a monitor if

you want to use the ROG Ally as your

desktop computer because the 6-inch or

7-inch display on the ROG Ally, even

though it is really good, it is just way

too small to be used as a desktop setup.

Surprisingly, it has been extremely smooth

and good to use as a desktop computer

replacement. You can just plug this into a

monitor, use a USB hub, and plug anything

you want to. And using the dual monitor

displays is really convenient.

Convenient. For example, I've got this

27-inch curved monitor as my main monitor,

but then I can also use the ROG Ally

screen as an extended display to move

windows onto it. I could put like a

browser tab onto here and have a look at

the internet or watch YouTube on the ROG

Ally screen whilst doing some gaming with

the big screen. So I'm going to launch up

some Rainbow Six and I'm going to show you

what the gaming performance is like on

this device with a monitor plugged in and

with the internet going as an extended

display. It's really cool because you can

do all these kind of things as if it's an

actual gaming laptop or desktop PC, and

it's just so much cheaper. It's like $700

compared to a $2,000 laptop or $1,500

desktop computer build. And also you can

just unplug this and then take it over to

the bed and continue your gaming on the

bed or on the sofa. And there's a lot of

compatibility and versatility to be found

in this kind of computing setup. One of

the things I didn't like about my gaming

laptop was basically the size of it. It

took up a lot of space on my desktop, and

having the ROG Ally makes it so you can

have a much cleaner setup with this

smaller keyboard and just the mouse on the

mousepad thing, gaming mat thing, and then

you have your monitor in the back. And

also the fan speed is much quieter. I'm on

turbo mode right now and the fans— I don't

know if you can hear the fans. Let me show

you with the mic closer to the fans.

So that's the sound of the fans, and even

on turbo mode, it is much quieter than the

turbo mode on my laptop, which was really,

really noisy. We're currently running at a

temperature of 95 degrees Celsius,

which is pretty hot. I don't know if you

can see that. Over there in the corner.

You can see little stats here. We've got

95 degrees, which is— yeah, that's

actually pretty hot. And we're running at

FPS of 100 to 120,

and the APU wattage is at 45. So I'll show

you some Rainbow Six gameplay to show you

how good this is. Okay, so we got a

game of Rainbow Six loaded, and I'll show

you my settings. We are currently running

this game at ultra settings. Everything is

pumped up to the maximum settings And

display is set to 1920 by 1080,

120Hz refresh rate. And look at this, I

don't know if you can tell, but the game

looks stunning. Look at the colors. Okay,

that's kind of because of the monitor. It

depends on what kind of monitor you have.

This is a cheap monitor, so if you don't

think it looks that great, then you've got

to keep in mind that this is a very cheap

monitor because I'm kind of broke. But

anyway, the game still looks and plays and

runs really well. We got 184 80

FPS and it's running extremely smoothly.

I did some testing between my laptop and

the ROG Ally playing this game and it's

basically the same. I couldn't really tell

the difference. I had my laptop playing

Rainbow Six, same settings, it was

basically the same. I would even say that

ROG Ally has higher FPS than my gaming

laptop does. So I'll show you some

gameplay. Problem is if I do that, I'm

probably going to die very quickly and I

won't have anything to show you. So my

team ally member is bleeding out.

Good stuff. See if I can save him. This

game feels so good. I can't believe how

smooth it is running on this little

handheld device plugged into a massive

monitor as well. It's very impressive what

you can do with this little thing. Okay,

so let's help my friend, although I'm

probably gonna get shot whilst trying to

help him. Or should I help him, or should

I defuse the bomb first? I think the bomb

is more important. Oh, now I'm dead, and

we're both dead. So, um, okay, that wasn't

a great example of amazing gameplay,

but I think you see what I mean with the

game running extremely well. I played

other games. I played Lies of P, and I

played Elden Ring and Starfield. I might

play some Starfield as well to show you

what it's like on this little thing. And

it seems like my team member is very mad

at me for not reviving him. What's your

problem, dude?

Why are you hating on me?

Why did they get so mad? It's just because

I didn't revive him. If I tried to revive

him, I would have gotten shot anyway.

So put the camera back. Let's do one more

match because that was pretty funny.

Okay, look, look how good this game runs.

I can't believe how good this game runs.

It's like a tiny little handheld device,

only costs $700, and it's running this

game on ultra at nearly 100 FPS. I can't

believe it compared to my $2,400

gaming laptop. Which is having problems

with overheating now. So we're running at

a temperature of 80 degrees, which is

lower than my laptop runs. My laptop runs

at like temperature of maybe 88 usually.

Oh my God, I can't get any shots in before

I get shot in the back. So I'll show you

Starfield next because we're not really

getting anywhere here. Okay, so here we

have Starfield. You should be aware of

this game. It's a very new game, very

modern game, very demanding game as well.

And actually my laptop struggled to play

this game when it first came out. I don't

know if that's because it was poorly

optimized or because my laptop was running

an NVIDIA graphics card and that's not

really optimized for this game. And, um,

this ROG Ally is running an AMD chip and

apparently they made this game for Xbox

first, optimized for Xbox, and Xbox runs

on AMD chips, same as ROG Ally. So I'm

guessing the game runs better on the ROG

Ally because it's AMD And I'm getting an

FPS of around 30 to 40, and that's with

graphics all set to low. If we set it to

medium, I really don't feel confident that

this game would be very playable. So I'll

show you my settings. Everything's set to

low. We've got V-Sync off, we've got

upscaling off, we've got film grain off,

which makes the game look really ugly when

it's on. I don't know why it was on by

default, but yeah, everything is on low.

We've got upscaling off because I think

that slows down performance. And, uh,

yeah, the game looks pretty good to me.

It runs really smoothly compared to my

laptop as well. So when I first played

this game on my laptop, it lagged a lot,

especially when opening the inventory and

then closing the inventory. But I don't

really have any problems. Like, I can open

the inventory and just move around in the

inventory, and everything's really smooth.

I don't really have any problems at

all. Everything is so smooth, and it's

quite amazing you could play this modern

game which is supposedly very demanding.

People were saying, oh, it doesn't run

well on my laptop, and then Todd Howard

was saying, maybe it's time to upgrade

your computer. Well, this is running on a

tiny little handheld, so the game can run

on cheaper devices. Look at the sharpness

of things like the text on little displays

and stuff like that. I'll show you the

loading time as well. When we enter this

door, it'll go into the Nova Galactic Star

Yard. I might actually play this game a

second time because I've already finished

it on my laptop, but I had such a laggy,

crappy experience because of its

performance, and I'm just really blown

away at how smooth this is. And it, it

might be fun to play it a second time now.

So yeah, let's have a look at the

gameplay. I think there's some enemies

around here. Some Spacers are going

to be fighting Crimson Elite people. Oh

wow, okay, that felt really smooth. It

felt like Rainbow Six. That felt really

good. I hate how bullet spongy

the enemies are in this game. They take a

lot of bullets. I hate how when you press

R near the body, it opens up that

inventory system. Let's try out the

shotgun.

Okay, that's pretty good.

Yeah, this feels really good to play. It

feels so good that I'm actually tempted to

play it again, even though I finished it

already. The annoying thing is you keep

running out of bullets. I've run out of

bullets and everything now, and I've run

out of medkits. This guy is gonna take me

out. Oh, that was close. I've got no

medkits and no bullets.

Let's just take everything, I guess. Why

does this keep happening to me? Oh,

there's a med pack. There. So yeah,

as you can see, the game runs really well.

You'd be thinking, oh, there's no way I

can play Starfield, very demanding game,

on this little ROG Ally. Well, you can.

Should we try setting— putting the

settings to medium? I feel like it's going

to crash. Let me just save it, quick save

there.

I had this weird frame rate lag problem on

my laptop where sometimes it would just

start lagging and the only way to fix it

was to go into the inventory and then exit

the inventory to kind of like reset what

the FPS is doing. But I don't seem to have

that problem yet. It must be like an

NVIDIA versus AMD issue.

Ooh, medkits here. What's that?

It is also really nice playing this game

on the bigger screen. Ooh,

and him.

What's that? Bandages,

case laces. It kind of looks like Fallout,

doesn't it? The artwork. It just feels

like a science fiction kind of

Fallout, as if it is kind of like Fallout

5, like a sequel. The whole world gets

nuked and then you end up in space to

survive. That's what I would imagine.

Wait, these guys were not dead last time I

Damn, I can't believe this is playing so

well. I wonder if we can play GTA 6 when

that comes out. I was thinking, oh my God,

I need to upgrade my computer, I need RTX

4090 to play this game. It's running on an

AMD Z1 Extreme integrated

GPU chip. This is amazing.

And the fact that you could unplug the ROG

Ally and then just play this on the bed

or, I don't know, on the plane for like an

hour maybe. Get some battery banks, you

might be able to play a couple hours. I

don't know why everyone's dead. It's kind

of weird. It kind of feels

like playing Rainbow Six.

Usually you're supposed to fight all these

enemies. Did I

already defeat them?

So we got an FPS of 40, 35. I'm back

at the beginning. Yeah, maybe I already

finished this and I just loaded a save

where I already wiped them all out. Check

my missions.

Says go to Neptune.

Yeah, I think we're done here. Show you

the loading times. So where's Neptune?

Set course for Neptune. Okay,

cannot fast travel from here. Okay, let's

go back on the ship. Cockpit,

undock.

Damn, I'm really blown away with this.

This is playing flawlessly.

It looks great as well, even though it's

on low settings. It looks fine. It's

sharp, the lighting's good. Look at that

lighting. It looks really good even on low

settings. I can't believe this.

Oh, I'm already at— wait, where am I?

Where is Neptune? Oh, it's just over

there. Ah, this map thing is really

annoying to navigate.

Okay, so I need to boot up the grav drive.

Yeah, this looks great. I'm really happy

with this as my main computer to play

these games and also just do web browsing.

And the temperature is only 78. It's not

like it's melting here.

Very impressive.

It's impressive it can play modern games

at a good FPS.
