[2020-07-31] ANNOYING things about Living in Germany as an ASIAN man [h1YWLASo5Ak]

As you may know, one of the video series

that I make that are fairly popular on my

channel are my Why I Hate Living in XXX

Country videos, and I wanted to make one

about Germany. That's one of the reasons I

decided to come here in the first place,

and I've been here for about 3 weeks now,

and honestly, I'm really struggling to

find things to complain about when it

comes to living in Germany, and I don't

think I'll be able to make a Why I Hate

Living in Germany video, so I guess I'll

just title this this one my thoughts on

living in Germany and then talk about the

things I like about it. All of the

problems I had in Japan and Korea when it

came to things like food and restrictive

internet and people having bad manners

outside in public— none of that exists in

Germany. None of those problems. I don't

have any of those problems here in

Germany. If I had to be really nitpicky

and think of things that are kind of

annoying, I guess it's a bit annoying on

Sundays when most of the shops are closed.

You can't go to the supermarket, so you

kind of have to prepare in advance to not

be able to go to the supermarket on

Sunday. That's it really. I can't really

think of anything else to complain about.

One other thing is, you know, when you're

crossing the road, there's a traffic

light. It goes from green back to red

really quickly, so you only have about 5

seconds to cross roads, even if they're

really wide roads. But apart from those

2 things, I can't really think of anything

else to complain about. I guess the

graffiti is a 3rd thing I dislike about

Berlin. I'm not sure about outside of

Berlin. It seemed like mostly in Berlin

where a lot of the graffiti is. I'm not

really a big fan of graffiti. I don't

think it looks good. I feel like it just

ruins the appearances of buildings and

cities. It just looks messy and Some of

the artwork is quite good, and you can

tell the graffiti artist is talented, but

a lot of it just looks like rubbish, like

a load of scribbling that a 5-year-old did

on his bedroom wall. And I just don't

understand the appeal of doing graffiti.

If you want to make a piece of artwork,

why don't you just get a piece of paper or

canvas and then do a painting, hang it up

inside of your house, or take a picture,

put it on Instagram? Why do you have to do

it out in public and then force everyone

to look at your artwork, not everyone's

going to like it or appreciate it, and

you're kind of forcing it onto people.

So yeah, I'm not really a big fan of

graffiti, and I don't want to keep going

on about graffiti. Otherwise, this video

is going to be about why I hate graffiti

and not about living in Japan. So yeah,

graffiti and Sundays are just things I

don't really like about Germany. But apart

from that, I can't really find anything

else to complain about. I think it's a

really convenient and easy country to live

in. Some people in the comments said

German people aren't very friendly or

something, but I haven't really

experienced that. I haven't talked to any

German people apart from a couple Airbnb

owners, and they were really friendly,

and I haven't had any negative experiences

because of the way I look. I don't really

feel like I'm discriminated against, and

the language barrier, I don't really feel

like that's a problem either. Obviously,

I don't speak German, and the only times I

have to speak to people is when I go

shopping And that's not really a problem

either. Every time I've had to talk to

someone in a supermarket or shop, they

spoke English. Now I don't really have to

say much. I just say hello. That's

basically the same in German. And then I

say, can I pay by card, please? And then

they say, okay. And then they give me the

receipt and I say, thank you. That's,

that's all I have to say when it comes to

talking to people. And so far Every German

person I've encountered has been able to

speak good English. So not being able to

speak German isn't really a problem. It's

kind of funny, I guess, because during all

of my 20s, I was so obsessed and focused

on Japan and Asia and living in Japan or

Korea because I always kind of thought

those countries were perfect and amazing

and so much better than anything in

Europe. And then I had all these problems

living there. For example, things like

people spitting all the time in Korea. I

haven't seen anyone spit here at all, not

even once. And it's great. I feel like

people are better mannered in Europe or in

Germany at least. And yeah,

I feel kind of silly because during all of

my 20s when I was younger, I always kind

of looked down on Europe. I thought, why

would I want to go to Europe? It's so

boring and the towns and the cities look

so old. There's no skyscrapers or fancy

modern stuff. Public transport isn't very

good. There's no bullet trains. I always

kind of looked down on Europe and I always

thought Japan is the place where I want to

be and Japan is perfect. And I went to

Japan, lived there for a few years, and

turns out it's not that perfect. It's not

that great. Now I'm in my 30s, I'm

starting to feel like I have this whole

new appreciation for European countries.

I think that they look nicer, the towns

and the cities, they look nice.

They have all of these historical

buildings, there's no ugly towers of

concrete and glass all over the place. I

just, I feel like aesthetically the towns

and cities in European countries in

general look nicer than all of those

skyscraper Asian cities. I guess my way

of thinking is kind of changing now, and

I'm starting to appreciate nature and open

wide spaces more than I used to. I guess

when I was younger, I just had this, I

guess, a fascination with modern looking

buildings and sci-fi futuristic looking

buildings and skyscrapers and stuff like

that. But now I'm thinking that kind of

stuff looks a bit ugly. I like trees and

grass and green and fields and hills and

rivers. That, that looks way better, and

it makes you just feel more relaxed to,

to be surrounded by that kind of

environment than being surrounded by

towers of concrete and glass and traffic

and roads and loads and loads of people

spitting all over the place. I think I

would even say that so far I feel like

Germany has been the best country I've

lived in so far. I haven't really lived in

England by myself. I've only lived in the

countryside in my parents' home. I've

never really tried living in a city or in

London by myself, so I can't really

compare it fairly. But out of all of the

other countries that I've been to, I can

easily say that I actually like

Germany. And I'm finding it very hard

to find things that I dislike about it. I

think it's great, and I could even see

myself living here long term. I was

planning to go back to England in— at

the end of July, but now I'm not so sure.

I'm thinking about staying on longer,

maybe a couple more months somewhere else

in the countryside where I could find

maybe an even bigger Airbnb for a lower

price. Not really that interested in

staying in the city anymore because I

don't really leave the Airbnb much anyway,

and when I do leave, I just go on a walk,

and I don't really want to walk around the

city. I'd rather walk by a river or in a

park or where there's nature. When it

comes to food, I don't really have any

complaints either. All of my favorite

foods can be found in the supermarket.

Even the bacon, I think, is pretty good.

They've got loads of different varieties

of sausage The food is pretty much the

same as the food back home in England. I

guess there's a few things missing like

Scotch eggs, pork pies, beef pies,

Cornish pasties. I guess there's a few

things you can only get in England. I do

most my own cooking now— well, I do all of

my own cooking, so it's not really a

problem. I just get simple things like

some meat, some fish, some potatoes,

vegetables, and that's all you really

need. For, for food. I don't really need

anything fancy. And they have quite a good

selection of Asian foods as well. If you

go to certain supermarkets, they have

really good sushi, even better than sushi

I had in Japan. I don't know why, but I

feel like the sushi they make in Europe is

way better than the sushi from Japan.

They have stuff like avocado sushi rolls

here that I've never seen in Japan for

some reason. I don't think Japanese people

like avocado with their sushi. I find it

kind of funny when sometimes people say in

the comments, you should go to this place

or you should go to that place because the

people are so friendly, as if they expect

me or they imagine that I would actually

just start talking to random strangers.

Can you imagine me striking up a

conversation with someone who's waiting

next to me at the bus stop or the train

station? As if that would ever happen. So

people being friendly or unfriendly, it

doesn't really matter to me as long as

they keep to themselves. And they're not,

you know, rude or unpleasant to be near.

It's really convenient being able to do

all of your shopping without needing cash.

I use my card to pay for everything when I

go to the supermarket. And you might be

wondering, why am I bringing this up as if

that's interesting? Well, I guess it's

because I lived in Japan for a few years

and in Japan you can't

use your card when you go to the

supermarket. You have to pay by cash. And

it was just so annoying having to bring

cash and then wait for the cashier to give

you back your change. It's just so much

easier to pay by card. You just tap it on

the side, it goes beep, and then you go.

I don't have any cash. I don't even use

any cash. I haven't used any cash since I

got here. Now that I think back on my last

trip to Germany last year, it's kind of

funny how stupid I was and how dumb I

acted sitting around that hotel all day

long, just playing Rainbow Six, whining

about some girl or not being able to get

dates or feeling lonely. I feel completely

different since then. I feel like I'm a

completely different person since last

year. Yeah, it is lonely sometimes, but I

guess I've gotten used to it and I found

things to keep myself busy, like working

out, doing exercise, doing cooking.

Couldn't really do these things in the

hotel because, you know, there's no

kitchen. There was hardly any space. I

think the trick to life is to

find things to do and focus on

working on them. If you don't have any

interest in doing anything, you just sit

around playing video games all day long,

feeling all sad and sorry for yourself,

then obviously you're going to feel

miserable. And I feel like it's taken me

a long time to understand that. I think

the main difference that's affecting my

mood is living in an Airbnb versus living

in a hotel. Hotels are not nice places to

live in. Even if it's an expensive,

fancy-looking hotel, you just get one room

with a bed. Even if it's a big room, it's

still just one room. I really feel like to

live a satisfying life, a comfortable

life, you need multiple rooms. You need a

bedroom, that you wake up in and then get

out of when you're not sleeping anymore.

And then you need a living room and a

kitchen, a proper living area with a sofa

and a TV and a proper kitchen to make

food. You can't just spend all day sitting

in a bedroom, sitting on a bed. It just

brings my mood down. I don't want to wake

up in a bed and then spend the rest of the

day sitting on the bed. So having a proper

place to live in that feels like a home

has really helped improve my mood and make

me feel like Yeah, I'm living in a house,

not in a hotel room. And I've also deleted

dating apps. I haven't even bothered with

Tinder. I feel like not doing dating

and not doing Tinder and stuff like that

has also helped my mood because I'm not

really sure why, to be honest. I guess

when I was trying to do Tinder, I just

felt frustrated because I wasn't getting

anywhere. And I wasn't meeting anyone that

I really clicked with. And it was just

like one disappointing date after another.

I guess it's a bit of a shame that England

decided to leave the EU, so I won't be

able to just stay here without a visa

after— I think it's December when Brexit

is going to take place. So before

December, I can just live here without a

visa or anything. But after December,

I'll have to— I'm not sure how it's

going to work. I think I'll be able to

stay as a tourist for a few months, but

then after that, you would probably have

to get some kind of visa to stay longer.

So in conclusion, yeah, I think I found a

pretty good country and I, I feel quite

comfortable here. I don't really have

anything to complain about, and that's

probably the first time I've ever said

that. Maybe some people think it's boring

because I'm not doing anything

interesting. I'm not meeting anyone, not

stirring up any drama. Well, to be honest,

this is, this is how I like to live. I

like to live a nice, peaceful lifestyle

without being bothered by lots of other

people. I just like to be by myself and

relax and, you know, have a nice

slow-paced easy life. Oh, one strange

thing about trains here is, well,

usually, for example, in Japan and in

England, you have a ticket barrier and

then you have to buy a ticket to get past

the ticket barrier. But in Germany, they

don't even have a ticket barrier. You can

just walk straight down to the platform

get on the train without even buying a

ticket, and no one checks to see if you've

bought a ticket. There's no barrier, no

ticket office. You can just walk straight

to the platform, get on the train. They

have ticket machines on the platform, and

that's where people buy them, but you

don't have to buy them. I didn't buy one

last time. I just rode the train for 20

minutes without buying a ticket, and, um,

yeah, no one even checked, so that's good.

There's also these electric scooters

everywhere, which I really like. If you

remember when I was back in Korea, I had a

lot of fun with the electric scooters and

I was raving on about them. They have the

exact same ones here as well, and it's

really cheap. It's about €4 for half an

hour of usage. And I think this will

probably be my last video about Germany

because I'm not really doing any

traveling. I'm not really properly living

in Germany and mixing with German people.

I'm just kind of living in my own isolated

bubble. So I think this will be my last

video about Germany. I think people are

getting bored of Germany anyway, so I'll

go back to making different kinds of

topics. I'm not sure what I want to make

yet. Maybe some more kind of

commentary-based topics. I think those

could do well.
