why i HATE the ROG Ally

Hello, welcome back to a new video. So

it's been a few weeks, or maybe a week and

a half, since I bought my ROG Ally, and

initially I was really happy with it. But

after using it for a while, I've actually

gone back to using my laptop. So as you

can see over here, I've actually gone back

to my laptop, plugged that into my new

monitor, and I'm just finding myself that—

I'm finding that I find myself using the

laptop or enjoying the laptop more than I

enjoy the ROG Ally. So at first I thought

this monitor looks kind of rubbish because

it's a cheap monitor, only costs about

£120. But actually the monitor looks

fine when it's plugged into the laptop,

but when it's plugged into the ROG Ally,

for some reason it looks worse, like

slightly worse, and I'm not sure why. I'm

pretty sure the settings are exactly the

same, same resolution, that kind of stuff.

But I feel like it just doesn't look as

good as it does when it's plugged into the

laptop. Also gaming— when it comes to

gaming, my favorite game Rainbow Six plays

completely fine on ultra mode on my

laptop. And I guess the experience of

playing Rainbow Six on the ROG Ally versus

the laptop, I don't really notice any

difference. It's basically the same. So I

just tend to use the laptop more because

it's got more USB ports, it looks better

on the monitor And also the laptop is

slightly more powerful, obviously,

because it's like a more expensive gaming

laptop. But I thought I could play modern

games on the ROG Ally and it'll be fine

because my laptop struggles to play modern

games for some reason recently. Maybe it's

already too old. So for example,

yesterday I tried playing the new Cities:

Skylines 2, which is like a new

city-building game came out. At first I

tried it on my laptop and I was getting

rubbish FPS on high settings. It was

really laggy, like 10-15 FPS. On medium,

it was a bit better, but really to play

the game at the best FPS, I had to set it

down to low and it looks just kind of

ugly. So I thought, okay, I'll try playing

it on the ROG Ally instead and see if

that's any better. But it was worse. I

could only play the game on the ROG Ally

at ultra low settings, and then I had a

reasonable FPS of around 30. Anything more

than low or ultra low, it would just be a

massive laggy mess and it was completely

unplayable. So I just switched off, went

back to my laptop to try and play it for a

bit, and then I just gave up because the

game is boring anyway. So I'm kind of

struggling to actually find reasons to use

this thing. General computing, I'd rather

use my laptop. Rainbow Six, I'd rather use

my laptop. Streaming and editing videos,

I'd rather use my laptop, although I did

try editing one video on the ROG Ally and

it was completely perfectly fine. It

managed to run the video editing software

and export the video at highest settings,

and it was pretty quick at exporting the

video as well. And I also tried live

streaming on it. So the only problem was

with this mic plugged into the ROG Ally,

for some reason it didn't sound very good

even though it's at same settings as my

laptop. So these weird things happen where

I plug in a monitor or I plug in a mic to

the ROG Ally, and even though the settings

are the same as far as I know, it sounds

or it looks worse than when I plug it into

my laptop, and I really don't know why.

The screen on the ROG Ally looks amazing

when you play games like this with the

keyboard and mouse. Although the screen is

very small and hard to look at, it does

look really good. But I want to play— if

I'm going to play desktop and keyboard and

mouse as a desktop with the ROG Ally. It

really has to be plugged into a monitor,

but it looks rubbish on the monitor. I

don't understand why. So now the only

reason, the only good reason or good use I

found for the ROG Ally is to play casual

games like Lies of P. I mean, Lies of P is

actually pretty good on it because you

don't need keyboard and mouse. It's not

like Rainbow Six where you need keyboard

and mouse. Games like Elden Ring or

third-person action games or racing games

or things like Cyberpunk where it's, it's

just like a single-player RPG kind of

game, you don't really need a keyboard and

mouse and it, it's fine just using the

controls on it. So Lies of P is pretty

good on it, it's got good FPS, graphics on

high, it runs really well and stable, and

using the controllers built onto the ROG

Ally is actually more comfortable than

using keyboard and mouse when it comes to

those kind of games. So I like the ROG

Ally for doing some casual gaming whilst I

put something on the big screen to watch,

and I just like sit back and play some

games on the ROG Ally. It's kind of

annoying the battery life is really

rubbish. It doesn't even last 1 hour,

lasts like 40 or 50 minutes. So it

basically has to be plugged in at all

times. I tried to play Burnout Paradise on

it, which is a racing game, and it

wouldn't open. Every time I press play,

it would launch like the beginning opening

loading screens, and then it would just

close on itself. And I don't know why. I

tried restarting it, it just wouldn't

open. So some games just won't work on it.

And now I'm asking myself, did I just

waste £500 on buying this thing? It's not

a huge amount of money, but it's still

quite a lot of money to spend on something

you're not getting a lot of use out of. I

was thinking that this would be a great

use of money because it's going to become

my new desktop PC, and then it'll fix all

the problems I had with my laptop instead

of creating all new problems.

Unfortunately, the experience of trying to

use it as my only computer just— it feels

like a step down in almost every single

way compared to the gaming laptop, which I

still feel like is my best and most prized

device so far. And now I don't really know

what to do with it. So for example, if I

go traveling, what am I going to take?

The laptop and the ROG Ally? Why would I

take both of them? But then would I be

able to survive without the laptop and

only the ROG Ally? Because that'd be

pretty cool if I could just put in my

backpack the only the ROG Ally and the

mouse and the keyboard. Actually, I might

not even need the keyboard really because

if I'm traveling, what am I going to be

doing? I don't think I'm going to be

sitting at the table playing Rainbow Six,

but you never know. I remember a couple

years ago I was doing some traveling and I

was bored and lonely, and being able to

have my laptop and just boot up Rainbow

Six and chat to people whilst playing

Rainbow Six, to my team, and just messing

around did help me feel a little bit less

lonely, and I felt like I was doing some

kind of social activity. I could just try

and play it using the controller buttons,

but then it just feels rubbish when you're

trying to play Rainbow Six with the

joysticks and the buttons compared to a

good keyboard and mouse. But then if I

bring the keyboard and mouse, then the

screen of the ROG Ally is just too small.

And then I thought I could bring the USB-C

hub with the HDMI cable, so if there's a

television in the hotel room, I can plug

it up to the television and then just put

the keyboard and mouse on the coffee table

or something like that. But it would be so

cool if I could just bring only the ROG

Ally and maybe my iPad so I could watch

stuff on the iPad whilst doing some gaming

on the ROG Ally, because that would make

my backpack a lot lighter than having to

bring the laptop and the laptop charging

power brick and all the cables and the

keyboard and the mouse and all this and

that. It would be so nice if I just bring

only the ROG Ally and nothing else, maybe

my phone as well and some power banks.

I'm thinking if I go traveling, I would

definitely need PC games because PC gaming

is the only good gaming. I try to only

game on the Switch OLED, but the games on

the Switch OLED are just not up to my

standards. They're not compelling enough

for me as an adult. I'm not a kid. I don't

really find Mario and stuff like that

Nintendo has to offer very appealing. So

I'm definitely a PC gamer and I need some

kind of PC gaming device. The problem with

traveling is it's a very tiring and

exhausting process and activity. You're

not going to be out and about all day

long. You might come home or maybe it will

start raining and you'll have to come back

to the hotel and kill a few hours here and

there in the evening. And what are you

going to do? I guess you're going to get

food, put something on to watch, and then

do some gaming. What else are you going to

do? I guess just go to bed. But sometimes

when you're traveling and you're out on on

the road, you do find yourself with

nothing to do and you don't really know

what to do. And the only thing to do is to

try and waste a few hours by doing some

gaming. So I would definitely either bring

the ROG Ally or the gaming laptop with me.

At this point in time, I just don't feel

confident about ditching the gaming

laptop. Really, my goal is I want to ditch

the gaming laptop and wean myself off the

laptop because it's so damn heavy. I

already hate having to stuff that thing

into my backpack. Look at this. And okay,

maybe it's my fault because I bought a

17-inch gaming laptop instead of a

15-inch, and I should have known it was

going to be bulky. But I hate the power

brick, and I hate how big it is, and I

hate the sound of the fans. It's just

annoying because it's so useful, so I

don't feel like I can just get rid of it

easily, and I can't find something that's

better than the gaming laptop, so I can't

get rid of the damn thing.
